I'm assuming the tidbit Jorg drops in this article is an example of machine learning AI combined with procedural generation, which they explain in more detail here at this timestamp: https://youtu.be/VPhScg_FINE?t=968 For any random countryside Azure AI does pre-analysis to identify terrain types & objects from photogrammetry, and then replaces those with 3D objects (i.e. bushes, rocks, etc) followed by surface material detail maps and tessellation. All of this pre and/or live computation is done on the server side, so no impact for us on the client side (especially with the even thinner v2024 client they're aiming for). Also the "3D out of 2D" techniques they're working on is very intriguing, i.e. areas where they can't fly planes to capture enough data for photogrammetry they can use 2D photos to then extrapolate to 3D (i.e. Mt Kilimanjaro). I'd like to see the stats to back that up, especially whatever constitutes "better" in your opinion, and particularly if, as you assume, "MSFS simply performs better" on "most computers out there" On my sample of one midrange rig, they both run well, and well above whatever standard David Mills was implying. Here is a video of MSFS at 4K running at over 200 FPS (average FPS, not just the upper limit), with an NVidia 4090: If you can show me XP 12 running at over average 200 FPS at 4K with similar specs to the video and with settings that best match the video I posted (the settings are mostly Ultra), please post the video. I’m assuming that this machine learning process and surface map technique will mean that we don’t end up with hideous green (or brown, or clouded) ortho imagery? Like the last time I flew south of Chicago for example it was VERY green...like a delicious pea soup! Very excited for this new sim!

And with some further optimisation I hope to see 500-600 fps in MSFS2024. 🤣 AMD 7800X3D, Windows 11, Gigabyte X670 AORUS Elite AX Motherboard, 64GB DDR5 G.SKILL Trident Z5 NEO RGB (AMD Expo), RTX 4090, Samsung 980 PRO M.2 NVMe SSD 2 TB PCIe 4.0, Samsung 980 PRO M.2 NVMe SSD 1 TB PCIe 4.0, 4K resolution 50" TV @60Hz, VR: Pimax Crystal Light + HP Reverb G2 @ 90 Hz, Honeycomb Bravo Throttle Quadrant, be quiet 1000W PSU, Noctua NH-U12S chromax.black air cooler. 60-130 fps. no CPU overclocking. very nice.

Although this specific technique probably doesn't directly apply to fixing the ortho tones issue (at least not that I know of), I'm assuming as part of advancing the world depiction visuals for v2024 they'll fix that too. Also, given that they'll be doing full seasons in v2024 they'll have to deal with the ortho tones for sure I'd think. Yup, v2024 and more details about it can't come soon enough 🙂 Edited November 12, 20232 yr by lwt1971 Len 1980s: Sublogic FS II on C64 ---> 1990s: Flight Unlimited I/II, MSFS 95/98 ---> 2000s/2010s: FS/X, P3D, XP ---> 2020+: MSFS Current system: i9 13900K, RTX 4090, 64GB DDR5 4800 RAM, 4TB NVMe SSD

I do. And I have. I don't have a high end rig, and again, within the fundamental differences of the two sims, I regularly get entirely enjoyable performance from both sims. Same with DCSW, same with P3D, same with IL2. My enjoyment of any particular sim hinges on the experience each provides, and the most finicky, P3D, is still more than good enough that I keep going back to it for a couple of preferred addons. And yeah, the "flight model "performance"" on XP is just fine. I'm even able to increase the FM rate with great results - very important for smooth rotary wing sessions.
