👍 Train, train, train …. for the day when all the training and practice really counts!

And when that day arrives you have to install DCS. 😄

Who's the other contenders?

Not about other contender's but the fact its going to have a hard glass ceiling as far as what makes a FIGHTER jet, the WEAPONS systems.

So rendition only goes so far....not a bad thing as it's for our civilian flight sim, but that claim just comes with a huge glass ceiling, still going to be a great addon for sure!

That's all I feel.

Well, never say never re a DCS install, but very unlikely for me. Far too much in Flight Simulator now that keeps me occupied to learn and fly proficiently for my available time. But I do keep an occasional eye on DCS videos for the wow factor! Blue skies!

Well, they claim it'll be the highest fidelity F-14 for MSFS, weapons or not, that's a pretty easy goal to reach and their claim is bound to hold water.

Yea I'll def be grabbing it for formation and carrier operations.

Oh and also it's gonna compliment this upcoming retro Miramar scenery.

I’ll be perfectly happy to fly this Tomcat doing what it would have spent most of its life doing…flying and not actually shooting at anything.

If it's done to the same fidelity as Heatblur have done in DCS, this will be the first "Study Level " Military aircraft in the Sim.

I'd argue the JF Hawk is the first. Though the flight model leaves a LOT to be desired.

I'm struggling to see how HB can deliver systems depth even close to DCS within the limitations of MSFS.

You could maybe follow the A2A route and model the systems in what is effectively their own sim outside MSFS and just render the results from that in the main sim ?

It won't be an issue. The F-14A/B are remarkably primitive systems-wise relative to many of the sophisticated addons already available.

I mean, it doesn't even have a GPS, and only the most basic of autopilot holds...

Some of the hardest things to get "right" will be carrier operations, and accurate swing wing & taileron flight modeling - particularly since this aircraft is meant to regularly be flown edge of envelope.

Given HeatBlur's accomplishments in DCS World, I've no doubt this iteration will be a great add-on for MSFS.

Primitive is not the same as simple.

The radar is the perfect example, by modern standard it's powerful but unsophisticated but as HB have shown in the DCS version modelling it and it's operation was a massive task.

What can you do with a fighter jet in a game that doesnt allow weapon use and has absolutely no option for any kind of mission? Fly By's will get boring after half an hour i think....

It actually NEVER gets boring:

And there are literally HUNDREDS of these routes just in the US, not to mention others around the world.

And one of my favorite high-skill, precision flying non-combat activities: carrier ops:

Never purchased DCS and only purchased 1 military aircraft in my 30 odd years of flight simulation. The F-14 is an aircraft that just drew me in and I was thrilled to experience the jet in previous Flight Simulator versions. No interest in the weapons aspects. Interested in flying the F-14 and landing on an aircraft carrier. From several sources, this release will be a gem for Flight Simulator 2020.

Laurie, if that's your jam, you can do it for $56 total cost. Carrier ops in DCS Tomcat (and DCS Hornet) are presently beyond compare!

No combat required, promise!

Well, well …. very interesting! Perhaps I just might explore … when my wife has vacated on one of her extended shopping sprees for a few hours and I can turn up the volume! Thanks for the lead.

...i just see no point in flying a military aircraft when you cant actually fly "military" and are forced to do things with it a fighter which it is not designed to do.

I'm fortunate enough to live nearby a major US military base and regularly get to see many (many) different types of military aircraft flying about.

Though they obviously engage in combat training, simply observing their ADS-B tracks shows they do a remarkable amount of "regular flying".

To each their own, but to me the view out of a fast jet cockpit is incomparable (particularly the F-16), and the modern ones have plenty of nav systems for simulating realistic IRL flying.

It's immaterial in MSFS, just like the weapons it was designed to guide.

I'm not sure I could disagree with that statement more.
