stutters seems start to occur on my side after the TLOD starts to decrease from the max set value

That statement appears to match my experience as reported late yesterday.  I am fine with taxi out, take off, climb, cruise, and descent until nearing final approach.  Then it turns into a stutterfest for late final, landing, and taxi in.  If I close MSFS and restart it at that same destination airport all is butter smooth again.  Here are my settings (sim not running).  I sense no difference between FPS sensitivity and FPS tolerance.  I am not using the shift-Z mod.  RTX 3080 w/MSFS FG mods.

I have just formally released AutoFPS version 0.4.2.10. You can read about it and download it here. In summary, it is a minor update to 0.4.2 that provides new options to address stuttering issue

You are a glutton for punishment with these scenarios you put your system through! 😄I still believe your TLOD is way too high, even with your high end system, and VFR mode struggles with adjusting your TLOD down as you get close to the ground simply because it has too much of a TLOD delta to deal with. When I had the app so it was unrestricted below 1000 ft, the large TLOD drops would cause stutters for you and now with the below 1000 ft restrictions in place, your TLOD is not low enough by the time you cross 100 ft, which also causes stutters. At least with IFR mode, it takes that huge TLOD range into account and will start marching TLOD down well before final approach but VFR mode doesn't do that and can't deal with it.

As such, my recommended solution for you is:

  1. If you want to use VFR mode, you need to have a much lower TLOD Max. 200 would be ideal (which is what I use now on a similar performing CPU to yours), 300 maybe and 400 max but no more.
  2. If you don't want lower TLOD Max, which I suspect you don't because you are a high TLOD junkie 😄, then resign yourself to not using VFR mode, ever!

Thanks for explaining the difficulty with a very high TLOD delta, I didn't think of that. Also, thanks for your recommendations. I’m closer to having a better understanding of the best usage scenario for VFR mode.

In fact I'm planning an approach into VQPR Paro (Bhutan), which ends in a visual circuit some 3000ft above the runway (which is just above 7000ft). As the altitude change is not that big on final approach, I'll at least test VFR mode to see if it works. There's not much in the area apart from a few monasteries and the airport. I promise not to complain about stutters if it doesn't work, you have my word 🙂

I'd also like to point out that I've had some virtually stutter-free flights in VFR mode, using insanely high settings - Lofoten Islands in the Vertigo, and an approach into the remote ENST in the Fenix. I was amazed how well AutoFPS handled this. In the Vertigo I dived towards the ground from above 10,000ft then did some hazardous low-flying at 300+ kts. Not sure if you've seen the videos.

It is possible that the GPU-Z interface is causing an overload of the GPU at times, external to what MSFS is asking from it, and that results in these stutters. If I can get a few other users to confirm it too eg. @Cpt_Piett, I may just disable the GPU-Z integration code as it doesn't do anything in the app other than display your GPU load anyway.

Been running with GPU-Z on and off for a while now. Can’t say that I notice any difference re: stutters. IMO although its nice to see the GPU load in the app, is not necessary.

Just looked through the 0.4.2.7 release notes. Very excited about:

Quote
  • Changed VFR mode to start up with TLOD Min like IFR mode does, rather than with the default MSFS TLOD setting like previously.
  • Removed VFR mode TLOD sliding scale reduction as it can cause TLOD to be too high on landing and cause worse stutters than if it marched down much quicker on that same approach.

Just did an approach with a touch and go in the Fenix into LGAV Athens in IFR mode (0.4.2.7). Worked like a charm, no discernible stutters despite my high settings:

That’s very strange as TLOD only changes from your max (200) to your min 50. Not sure what’s going on, perhaps Reset has an idea.

I just right-click on the icon, open file location. Then navigate to the log folder.

Logs in %appdata%\MSFS2020_AutoFPS\log

Config: %appdata%\MSFS2020_AutoFPS\MSFS2020_AutoFPS.config

I did a flight (MUC-VIE) with the Fenix A320, I used fixed TLOD 50, OLOD 50 (perhaps I should have used a higher OLOD), no stutters, AutoFPS was OFF. I used TLOD 50 as this is the min value used in the AutoFPS config (for example below 1500 feet). I will do the return flight with TLOD 50 and OLOD 150 or 200.

In my testing I’ve found that OLOD has a surprisingly low impact on performance. If my observations are correct, OLOD only relates to airport objects. So I set it high close to ground and 20 at 10,000ft.

Exactly, now I did the flight with OLOD 200 fixed (TLOD 50 fixed), very low impact on the performance or not noticeable from OLOD, no stutter. So perhaps the adjustment of TLOD from high to low close to the ground create some stutters, still to be checked.

That’s quite possible, I remember others a while back having success with fixed OLODs. And I think you’re right about TLOD changes close to ground => induces stutters. Anyway, great to hear performance is better!

Just did 3 subsequent touch ‘n go’s in the Fenix at LGSK Skiathos, a scenic little Greek island. VFR mode. Approach starts at 4000ft AGL. I didn’t notice any stutters. None. Zero. Looking at the log, there’s no TLOD changes (and only very slight OLOD changes), so this makes sense. This is from the 2nd touch ‘n go:

At touch&go's did not notice some much issues, more from coming from far and above 10000 feet towards the airport, to landing, I am not sure how much of the map is loaded (when doing an airport circuit or coming from far and high to it) and to which area TLOD is applied.

You know that you will lose seeing 3rd party custom made objects like skyscrapers in the far distance.

Therefor I use a fixed value of 150 for OLOD ( IFR ).

@Reset XPDR : what I have noticed, now I am using the 0.4.2.7-test (but is the same with the previous versions I think), during approach and landing a regular call seems to be done, at least I see a regular spike on the MainThread. What I did on the ground after landing, I exit the AutoFPS and the regular spikes (calls) on the MainThread have gone. Restarted the AutoFPS and the spikes/calls do not re-appear (just ones rarely from time to time but not anymore often and like at a fixed interval). Any idea why?

Pretty much sums up my experience also.

Final approach is not smooth at all. I am using IFR mode. (9900k /2080ti...which usually holds up stutterless)

Very neat app, maybe not just suitable for my old rig. 🙂

At 10,000ft and TLOD 975 up to 100km of terrain textures and mesh are loaded (I measured with google Earth in an area I’m familiar with)

I think I’ve got pretty high OLODs near ground (up to 1000), but don’t think I’ve been in an area with custom objects. Got some SamScene city sceneries though, I guess they’ll count as custom objects. And perhaps drzewickies ones.

That's interesting. How regular are these spike? 1 second, as that is the main loop time?

Hard to tell. I switched temporary back to FG and there are pleny due to that 😄

One more thing, if during running I have Auto OLOD unchecked and set manually in MSFS settings OLOD to 150, the AutoFPS caps the OLOD to 100. Is intended like this? (0.4.2.7-test)

Edit: after sim restart, it takes the 150 as set.
