SU15 What Do I Need To Do Beforehand?

Recommended Posts

Although I've been flight simming since fs2000, I'm a fairly recent convert (from P3D) to MSFS2020. SU15 will be my first sim update. I purchased MSFS2020 via Steam and have some items in my community folder. What (if anything) do I need to do in advance of SU15? There's a ton of opinions out there on the web regarding this, but I'm looking for a consensus from those on avsim who purchased via Steam.

Sorry to break the consensus on this thread so far.

After three full reinstalls from scratch following a 'simple' SU update that failed (2 with MS Store and 1 with Steam), I go for the 'belt and braces approach', i.e. full back-up of:

  • --> Packages\Official folder.
  • C:\Users\<YourName>\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft Flight Simulator
  • --> SteamLibrary\steamapps\common\MicrosoftFlightSimulator
  • --> Steam\userdata\<steamnumber>\1250410\remote (all your controller profiles for MSFS)

It's long-winded, sure. Though it saves potentially several hours of downloading and a few more to get things back as they were if the update goes wrong.

Short answer: Enjoy the game until SU15 is there. Then, enjoy the game with SU15.

I haven't done anything to prep for an update since the very early days of the sim.  I stay out of the beta, and just let the final patch install.

When the sim first launched, there was no beta process, and a lot of addons could have problems.  Back then, clearing out the community folder was useful.  Now?  I just leave it.

If you want to back up your community folder in general, that is never a bad idea, but I don't think you have to do anything special.

not required. simply rename it to anything else and temporarily create a new empty COMMUNITY folder. or better yet use ADDONS LINKER.

Everybody seems to be talking about backing up the COMMUNITY folder.....but what about the OFFICIAL/STEAM folder? I have addons in both of these folders.

Sometimes I remember to rename the community folder but I have often forgotten to do so and never had an issue.

I would suggest deleting your rolling cache and any manual caches if you use them.
