What is the current VR of choice today for MSFS?

Depends on the HMD, Card, location, etc... I wouldn't call it a misnomer. In my experience I would call it mostly true. As an example, Q3, 6800XT, low settings, 30fps in the middle of nowhere, cities would be a slide show. Nothing was sharp with that headset. Another example: Pimax light, 4800S, NY City, I need to dial back most of my settings to medium. Otherwise is see lots of stutters.

A lot of non VR users think they can buy a VR headset and use their mediocre computer and see what they see on their monitor with the same smooth experience. Not going to happen.

Then something's possibly wrong on your end if you're only getting 30fps with that card in the middle of nowhere. Perhaps there's a setting draining performance you've missed, a mod causing a dragon or something else going on in the background.

I totally agree that newbies to VR can sometimes expect the same as monitor performance, but there's definitely a misnomer about what they actually need and I've seen this time and time again in the 8 years I've been a VR user now and as above I have proven that higher settings with lower end cards are feasible, you just have to know what you're doing which helps 🙂

The #1 VR performance boost I found is the resolution scale.  DLSS is the key IMO, I use DLSS Quality which effectively scales the resolution at 66%, and Balanced is 58%!  Both produce very good results (if you don't need glass panels).   I run at a solid 45 FPS for smoothness (which I get 95% of the time).  I guess what I'd consider essential is in the eye of the beholder.  Thus as always YMMV.

At 13:30 or thereabouts he looks straight down out the right side window, notice there are no microstutters. That's what I see to in Crystal Light too. At 8:20 he shows QuadView Companion. I haven't tried that yet (I didn't know about it).

I doubt it. Regardless I don't have that card or HMD anymore.

FYI: QuadView does not work in MSFS.

I'm getting the same 45 fps solid everywhere on my Crystal Light. I run in DX 11. Like you DLSS (Balanced) and Render preset at high end. There is no microstutters looking out the side left window and straight down. There was a little bit of that when I had a Reverb G2.

Of course colors are better than the G2 and sweet spot is wide as the whole view, almost.

I'm saving $100 not using the Crystal optional sound arms. Instead I just use my Bluetooth earpods that I use for music on my phone. The sound is way better than the sound on my old G2 headset. This is because the pods are in ear, not outside the ear. I saved another $100 by not buying the controllers for the Crystal Light. I don't need or want them for MSFS.

Crystal Light is rock solid in that it turns on and works every time. Every thing about it is a joy. It is more comfortable than the G2, but the G2 was very comfortable too. It is a tiny bit heavier than the G2 but has a better default mount strap: it comes with both a center strap and and a ratchet halo strap which are designed to use at the same time.

I got like 38 fps with the G2, and 45 fps with Crystal Light.

Excuse my dumbness here. Still very new to this VR stuff. Do you operate a physical build simulator? If not, how do you do all the switch flicking without the controllers?

Cheers

No. No, Mav, this is not a good idea.

No, I use a mouse, it's easier than using controllers. A trackball mouse strapped to a pilot's board (like you buy in a pilot shop).

I use these because a guy on Youtube used these exact devices:

destination departure kneeboard

Kensington Expert Wireless Trackball Mouse (model K72359WW)

Trackball is 6" x 5" and the ball is about 2" diameter (huge).

To turn a knob, you rotate that large big black dial with ridges on it that circles the ball. It does what a scroll wheel does.

Muscle memory, takes a little while but once you get used too it it becomes a breeze. Remember blind people can get up, get dressed, make breakfast then go for a walk, so pressing a few buttons and holding a yoke is pretty simple in the long run but say first it can seem weird.

Saitek X45 HOTAS - Saitek Pro Rudder Pedals - Logitech Flight Yoke - Homemade 3 Button & 8-directional Joystick Box, SNES Controller (used as a Button Box - Additional USB Numpad (used as a Button Box)

Thanks guys. Kneeboard, trackball mouse and muscle memory for physical switches. They say you learn something new everyday but I just learnt three new things before breakfast!!  👍

Crystal light uses a hot key to allow you to turn on or off (see through) the headset while watching, but it's low resolution and black and white only and it's also full screen. The Quest 3 pass through is color, higher res, and apparently it doesn't have to be full screen with 3rd party freeware apps which I see on Youtube.

5800X3D, RTX4070, 600 Watt, one or two 1440p 32" screens, 64 GB RAM, 4 TB  PCle 3 NVMe, Warthog throttle, VKB NXT EVO stick, Honeycomb Alpha yoke, CH quad, 3 Logitech panels, 2 StreamDecks, Desktop Aviator Trim Panel. Crystal Light VR.

Quest 3 pass through , you just double tap the headset to turn pass through on and off. I don't have a Quest 3.

The YT video where you can adjust the pass through windows, requires Steam VR which they tell me is less performance fps than Oculus VR.

Crystal Light uses hot key for pass through. It's only full screen. Very low res black and white. Not very good.

That's amazing tech. Apart from the ability to check IRL messages on your phone, you can also read open sourced paper approach plates if you don't have Navigraph?   Hmm, I just wish Quest 3 would look like that on my dinosaur CPU/GPU combo and I'd buy it in a heartbeat. If I could just stop buying B727F's, MD-11F's and soon B777F's (Bluebird B757..pleeeease not now) I might have a chance to start saving for an upgrade.

HP Reverb G2: This is my go-to headset for MSFS. The resolution (2160x2160 per eye) is amazing, giving you super sharp visuals, which makes a huge difference in flight sims. The tracking is solid, and it’s comfortable enough for those long flights. It’s also reasonably priced for what you get, so it’s a great middle-ground option.
