You should have infested in the CL. It's a 4K VR headset with a DisplayPort cable, no wireless radiation or compression. The CL looks amazing. Little details like scratches, reflections and rain drops come to life! Stuff like that I would barely notice on my 4K OLED display.

Whatever "CL" is.

My selection criteria for a VR headset were:

  • Stand-alone, so I can do the things that VR is actually made for (running around a room looking like a fool).
  • No requirement for base stations for motion tracking.
  • Good Linux compatibility.
  • Not too expensive.
  • Comfortable to wear.

And the Pico just ticked all that. Couldn't beat the (used) price either. If I want, I can even hook it up and stream via USB instead of WiFi.

With that setup, I can, in theory, sit myself down anywhere, stream a flight simulator via WiFi or USB and use hand tracking to flick switches and a broom handle as a control stick. But as usual, it's the inadequateness of the software side of it that ruins it all. It also doesn't help that Laminar brushed me off with "We do not support OpenXR on Linux" when I was troubleshooting controller issues with them.

Are you on WiFi 6?

wireless streaming Hi resolution VR content basically requires WiFi 6 (due to the low compression ratio) - might just be the inadequacies of the connection?

USB 3.0 is 4.8 Gbit/s (600MBps) - those MBps matter, 2x 1080p images at 60fps is 2x 2MB x 60 = 240MBps, 802.11n can only do 56MBps, Wifi6 is basically 1GBps.

Pimax Crystal Light (CL).

Your GPU is not ideal for VR. I had the 6800XT, and it was a slide show with Quest 3.

Do you play other VR games?

Are you guys talking about temp variations with the altimeter?

I still can't grease my landing in the 172 like I used to in the sim, the nose gear still wants to slam to the ground when the back wheels touch the runway. The friction feature Austin added to GA landing gear is unrealistic.

The sim's 172 was always way too easy to grease a landing.

The only time I've ever been able to match that IRL was in a cool, utterly windless morning.

It was the opposite for me in real life. I always had good stick and rudder skills. Most of my landings were fairly smooth. On a rare occasion, I would have a crappy landing. My worst landing was probably on my checkride, go figure!

I also found it easier in general to land the C172 in real than in the sim, go figure 😄

RL has so many more physical and visual cues.  Not surprising.

No 802.11n, but I'm like 3 m away from the router.

Pico 4 is 2160 x 4320 all in all, so probably not streamable in any sensible way, huh?

I'm on a 7900XT by now because the 6900 kicked it.

Mostly smallish free games (Lazerbait, The Lab, Under Pressure, some BeatSaber clone and a whacky WW2 shooter) and Space Docker VR, which all work fine. Not too keen on trying DCS and Elite, TBH.

Absolutely! I intuitively became one with the machine. That's why VR is such a game changer! It brings a lot of the visual cues. The only thing missing is a forced feedback yolk on my end.

streaming does compression, but that compression uses a lot of cpu/gpu, meaning you need much lower settings, will have more artifacts and still have a much higher chance of glitches.

wired usb3 or wifi6 should (theoretically) give you significantly better fidelity.

I am not a fan of wireless anything!

DCS is great! VR is impossible without a HOTAS joystick and Throttle, too many buttons to push on a keyboard.

I do have a HOTAS, but it still does not have enough buttons to not use the keyboard.

And don't get me started with DCS' input controls and input handling as I might just vaporize into a white hot cloud of rage.

Fun one for you to hack to your linking

https://github.com/mSparks43/747-400/blob/cf1ac34064681e84362c1831b160b204165da9a8/plugins/xtlua/init/scripts/B747.99.VRcontrols/B747.99.VRcontrols.lua#L274

That function will find what you are looking at it, rest of the script below maps  e.g.

B747CMD_VR_up_right				= create_command("autoATC/VR/cmdup_right", "VR right command up", VR_up_right_CMDhandler)
B747CMD_VR_use_right 				= create_command("autoATC/VR/cmduse_right", "VR right command use", VR_use_right_CMDhandler)
B747CMD_VR_down_right 				= create_command("autoATC/VR/cmddown_right", "VR right command down", VR_down_right_CMDhandler)

to do different things depending on what you are looking at (heading/alt etc)

For everything else, voice commands rock

Interesting approach, but likely a nightmare to set up for all cockpit manipulators.

This is similar to what was suggested in some DCS VR thread I found, by the way (map left and right mouse click to HOTAS controls, then look at control in VR and click).
