Grainy, pixellated textures

Featured Replies

Hi folks,

My Xplane 12 graphics have always been not blurry as lots of people complain about but grainy, shimmery and pixellated. The clouds look blocky and pixellated. It is driving me mad, not least because people like Q8Pilot, who has a similar system to mine, has a sim that looks lovely. Is there something I’m doing wrong? It doesn’t seem it has anything to do with VRAM which is more than sufficient when I monitor it while using XPL. Has anyone else had this? I don’t have it in MSFS or P3D, or any other application, for that matter. Maybe it’s my monitor that is incompatible with Xplane, but why would that be?

Cheers all

What is your FSR super sampling at? The lower settings, the blokkier everything becomes. IMO, this should be minimum at Ultra with a decent video card.

The screenshots are actually a great deal better than the sim, which makes me think it may be some sort of monitor issue

If it were a monitor issue, only you would see pixelated clouds.
But since your screenshots clearly show pixelated clouds on my monitor too, it means that your monitor has absolutely nothing to do with the problem and cannot cause pixelated clouds.

I noticed this plugin running:

FlyWithLua Info: Start loading script file E:\X-Plane 12/Resources/plugins/FlyWithLua/Scripts/rxp-xp12-enhancer.lua
FlyWithLua Info: Finished loading script file E:\X-Plane 12/Resources/plugins/FlyWithLua/Scripts/rxp-xp12-enhancer.lua

I suggest you try without.

FSR and RCAS settings?

The pixelated grid that we sometimes see in front of the clouds  is an known issue and I hope they will fix it for the next weather-update in 12.2.

I have tried it without as you suggest but makes no difference. I got that plugin to try and improve the visuals, no no effect I’m afraid.

FSR and RCAS settings - I’m not being obtuse but these settings make absolutely zero difference to the image quality, whatever I do with them.

I’ve had this problem since installing Xplane 12 - perhaps it needs uninstalling, clearing out and reinstalling - it seems to be more profound than just tinkering with in-sim settings.

Just read what I wrote about above. It’s a well known issue.

Make a separate installation of Xplane 12 with no addons and see what it looks like.

Interestingly have just done that. Reinstalled Xplane 12 and now worse if anything. Everything is unbelievably grainy, bitty, I dont know how to describe it. It's not blurry but very shimmery and blocky, like there's no anti-aliasing or filtering at all. It's so weird - I don't have these problems in MSFS or P3D. There's something about my system or setup that Xplane doesn't like and I just can't get to the bottom of it. It looks so awful as is, I can't really use it. Beginning to regret buying it to be honest. Have asked support but no help really.

The screenshots are much more acceptable than the actual image I'm getting, so I can't properly show you; that makes me still think it's some sort of display incompatibility.
