What are some of the "great" changes coming?

Featured Replies

Just curious as to what are some of the "great" changes coming to MSFS 2024?  I'd love to hear what some of you all have heard about the sim coming out in 4 days.

  • I seriously hope there will be a REPLAY function so that I can see what my landings and maneuvers look like.
  • I also hope that the force feedback I'm using now in MSFS, X-Force, is either improved our simply that the sim itself supports force feedback in its configuration.
  • I also would appreciate better flyability for helicopters in 2024. I don't know if that is possible within the sim or if it's something that's vehicle specific.
  • I expect the weather aspect of the sim will be very, very accurate.
  • I look forward to better photogrammetry that doesn't produce alien structures at low altitudes.
  • I would love for the sim to be very fast loading when being fired up.
  • I absolutely think it's necessary to be able to switch aircraft WHEREVER you are in the sim without having to go back to start screen (not developer mode).

These are just a few things that appeal to me, and I hope that many of you have an "inside line of communication" with those who really know.

What's important to you?

Giving AI to the ground vehicles and personnel to know when they are about to be, or have been, hit by you. It won't happen because it would degrade performance way too much.

Best current reference for what changes are coming are from MS/Asobo themselves.. see this presentation by Seb/Jorg/etc:

I don't know about the ground crew, but the 2024 SDK documentation makes mention of ground vehicles holding position to make way for aircraft and other ground vehicles.

When moving across the airport, ambient vehicles will use the TaxiPaths of the airport, favoring paths of type VEHICLE whenever possible, and they will also trying to avoid runways. When crossing a runway, they will pause at holdshort, and wait until the runway is free if ATC has been warned that the runway is currently in use for a takeoff or landing. If the User tries to takeoff without clearance, for example, the vehicles might cross the runway because they are not aware of the takeoff, since ATC has not been talked to. When taxiing on regular taxi paths, ambient vehicles are aware of other vehicles and aircraft taxiing, and ATC will also warn them in the case of incoming traffic near intersections.

Which IIRC is how it works in FSX/P3D. So did they just remake it or reenable old code?

They're working with Fabio Merlo to implement his Replay tool into the base sim, it was shown off in the FSExpo 2024 presentation

Read Helisimmer's article from the Grand Canyon event, lwt1971 linked it above

Loading times have improved a lot.

In my experience with FSX (and 2020 seems to be the same in some respects) it is often a scenery (pathing) problem, rather than a problem with the ground vehicle code.

Many airports in FSX seemed to be partially autogenerated...something I am pretty sure happens with lots of MSFS2020 airports...and the autogen code isn't perfect.  Sometimes nodes would intersect where they should not have, causing the ground vehicles to go places they shouldn't.

Ah Sorry, I meant the part about them stopping and making way for other traffic

Wonder if the scenery "popping" in/out will be fixed?

Thank you for this.  Excellent explanations of some of the new aspects of MSFS.  I, however, will not be getting into all the extraneous stuff like pilot's salaries, and adventures that require such extensive planning.  I just love flying!  I want to fire up the sim, get a realistic experience as I look down, and enjoy the feeling of the plane.  The developers have gone so deep into the flight experience that there is a real degree of complication that for me, would probably add to a frustrating experience.  I sure appreciate what the developers are doing, and I'm sure many will get deeply involved. I especially liked the explanation of the new wake turbulence that will linger behind on the runway for quite a while.  This all should be quite fun.

Hoped for sophisticated model/simulation of piston engine...

More efficient coding and native dx12 implementation along with better textures, better mesh, better weather, seasons and aerodynamics are going to be big advantages for me assuming that the new sim is smooth and performs well.

It will be interesting to see how many of my addons work properly too.
