Tail Dragger Recommendations ?

Featured Replies

Any favourites that AVSIM readers have ?

In addition to having reasonable flight qualities I am  also looking for a realistic level of unreasonable ground handling qualities (directional instability, ground looping tendency.)

All together adding up to reminding me what my feet and rudder pedals are for.

Any opinions gratefully received .

Cheers Tim

Pretty much any taildragger, designed with some care regarding it's RW counterpart dimensions and wing / tail profiles, as well as engine and prop, will be a good taildragger IMHO.

I have downloaded and really enjoyed some great freeware examples. Yes the cockpits may not be up to the level of most present addons, but they're free, and feeling wise feel great ! Examples bellow:

Fieseler Storch XP12 - Military Aircraft XP12 - X-Plane.Org Forum

AM3C Bosbok XP12 - Military Aircraft XP12 - X-Plane.Org Forum (never tried this one, have to give it a go!)

Supermarine Spitfire Mk1 - Military Aircraft XP12 - X-Plane.Org Forum

Hawker Hurricane Mk.I Mk.II V12 Update - Military Aircraft XP12 - X-Plane.Org Forum

Thanks for the recommendations gents.

Coupled with the correct level of avionics and automation; the Enhanced flight model SuperCub mod sounds exactly what I'm looking for.

Thanks for the recommendation.

Cheers Tim

default superCub with free EFM mod would be a good starter

Hey @C2615, I did once use that EFM, but lost it's track... Could you help with a link? Thx !

Thranda DHC-2 Beaver. Add REP package on top, and you'll get full Beaver experience, bar none. You will not regret it.

Current system: ASUS PRIME Z690-P D4, Intel 12900k, 32GB RAM @ 3600mhz, Zotac RTX 3090 Trinity, M2 SSD, Oculus Quest 2.

For everything X-Plane, my favorite always starts with Reality Expansion Pack by SimCoders.

In specific to taildraggers, they've recently made improvements in exactly that (see their blog at simcoders.com).

As @Pe11e states above, Thranda make very good addons in and of themselves, but I REALLY like Thranda + REP.

My vote for a taildragger package would be the very new Thranda Pilatus PC-6 + REP, because turboprops make EVERYTHING better 😉

If money is a concern then you could go for just the REP upgrade to the Default Piper Super Cub, which will run you just $20.

Great aircraft in principle, but a cruise speed on par with a Cessna 172SP would make it a snorefest.

Yes - I have that one and it's great!

However, visibility is atrocious and it isn't particularly challenging to fly or handle on the ground.

And, of course, it needs an actual runway, where the pc-12 can land in just about anyone's front yard 😁

True. If its handling is any close to the real thing, Burt Rutan did a great job on it. VSKYLABs rendition would have really benefitted from authentic engines, which were the weak point of the real thing (see its Wiki page). The PT6s are just boring in comparison.

What I do to spice things up is drop in my XLuaUtils and enable "Engine Damage". With the Limits set by VSKYLABS, it's possible to push a few engine parameters past redline at high speed, providing at least a bit of engine management.
