Should we all put 2020 back on hard drive?

Featured Replies

After buying and trying MSFS2024 I reinstalled Windows 11 24H2 from scratch and then only installed MSFS2024. I have a very clean and uncluttered system now and I like to keep it that way. I only installed whatever I really use (TrackIR, BATC, AIG Manager) and that's it. I love a clean system. No Navigraph (subscriptions ends in May), no LNM for that matter (loved it but only used it to pick dep and arr and the new MSFS2024 online planner is great for that), no nothing else. And certainly no MSFS2020.

I am extremely happy that I am not a serious simmer. Serious simmers aren't fun. In another topic there was a video from someone who dissed MSFS2024 and he actually honestly said 'I really enjoyed the MSFS2024 career mode and had big fun using the photographer mode but that's not what I fire up my sim for so MSFS2024 is not for me'... 🤔🤐🥴 Nooooooooo, serious simmers aren't my kind of people. I'd rather enjoy myself while I am playing MSFS2024.

  • "Should we all put 2020 back on hard drive?" no need to. I still have 2020, but haven't touched it since November 19th 2024. and have no intentions to.

  • I didn't use the words P3D or Concorde once I don't know WHAT you are talking about 😉

  • Mine was binned in November. It's in the same mental 'drawer' as FSX, FS9, FS2004 etc etc back to Psion Flight Simulator for my ZX81. All great in their time and fondly remembered but, history.

What about the serious simmers that are also gamers? Personally I like my games 'fun' but challenging and my sims 'serious' but challenging also.

Am I boring? I'm in my 60s but still practice bass guitar daily to 70s and 80s rock /pop /new wave classics plus modern stuff too. To me I find that lots of fun especially getting all the bass lines and notes spot on. My bass is like the ultimate hardware controller, pressing the right buttons at the right time is very rewarding. If I used software that took my inputs and 'corrected' them to whatever the devs thought acceptable the activity would no longer be fun. To me.

Of course I'm a dinosaur, but excitement is like beauty it's in the eyes of the beholders.

I am a dinosaur just like you and you are right, of course. 😉 I was exaggerating a little to make my point. I also could have said 'A lot of so called serious simmers here on AVSIM don't seem to be fun people'. 😉

Cool about that bass guitar btw! I used to play guitar until artritis made it impossible (yeah, I am that kind of a dinosaur) but sometimes think I should have made the switch to bass guitar: I do think you don't have to bend your fingers as much (simultaneously) as you do when you play a regular guitar (since on a bass guitar you usually only have on finger pressing a string where you often have to use four fingers with a regular guitar, at least the way I liked to play it: fingerpicking style like Bruce Cockburn or Harry Sacksioni or classical pieces). But this is really getting OT LOL

Try learning scales on the lowest 4 frets using open (standard tuning). Placing your fingers ready in position to push down the 'strings' (more like cable car wire!) will require that pinkie to do an almost unnatural stretch!

Look at this guy obviously struggling!

OK we'd better stop now as way off topic but thanks for the reply it just shows there is way more to the 'average simmer' than what appears on the surface!

I have to make sure that, as a serious simmer, whatever this means to you, but I am one for sure, I am funny as well 🙂...just ask me....

LoL

The beauty of FS 2024 is that after all these years I finally have a sim that is balanced between my 5900x and 3060ti.  So much so that after the last update I now get 115 FPS in cockpit (no FG) and 100 in external view.  FS 2020 could not manage beyond 70 FPS.

Only 70fps?? How did you survive?

yes, there was a gap between 70 and 100, where the frame counter would kick in again only above 100 fps. 😄

60-130 fps. no CPU overclocking.

very nice.

@turbomax FPS 200?! What sort of wizardry are you using to achieve this? E.g. TLOD, graphics settings...

7950X3D | RTX 4090 | 64GB DDR5

my private pre-beta version of multi-frame-generation

works even better in the main menu up to 530 fps, but you know that. 😃

my wizardry: I fly mostly GA, in the middle of nowhere, light traffic, just like in my real world flying. often without ATC and even without flight following. fps were even higher. 😃

FPS 200 looks cool but is it actually smooth? I am just beginning to have a look at FG etc. because I might be getting one of those nVidia 5000 cards but I sometimes get the idea it's great for pushing your shown FPS to the limit but that it doesn't necessarily make performance smoother.

Really looking forward to the first tests with MSFS2024 and the 5080...!

I guess it was when I recorded that back in the FS 2020 days.

but before I forget: my TV monitor does only 60 Hz 😃

to be honest: I am not really interested in anything above 60 fps.

and I am afraid you might get disappointed in the 5090: you might not get much higher fps in MSFS 2024 over a 4090 (perhaps 15%) unless Asobo enhances the scenery to Cyberpunk style. 😁

but why not get a 5090 when the new 4090s are currently selling even above 5090 list price!

Ooooooo, I am definitely not getting the 5090!!! Way too expensive! The 5080 looks interesting though: similar in performance to the (more expensive) 4090 and it can run all the new FG goodies. But honestly I am more interested in the performance without all those FG-tricks.

I'm very happy if I get above 60 with FG. Currently locked to 72 which works well with my hardware to get the smoothest experience 🙂

Ah, the RTX50 series - what to believe? I've seen a lot of negative "reviews" (it's not out yet is it). One thing's for sure: I'm not going to take everything Mr. Jensen says for granted haha. Apart from the fact that he has very cool leather jackets, he's VERY focused on the AI tech (DLSS4 etc) - and a lot of the criticism is re: the "fake frames". I.e. not a huge difference in raw power, but an increased focus on multi-FG.

So yeah, I agree. I don't think we'll get much better performance in MSFS with a 5090.

Is it though? This is what Jensen claims, but a lot of tech YT'ers are saying that the raw performance for the 4090 is better than the 5080 - but overall the FPS is better on the 5080 because of DLSS4. Or did I get that wrong?

likewise. totally agree. frame generated images and all that AI can't be trusted. all fake frames. I don't look at but ignore them artificial frames in between the real ones and trust only those honest, meticulously calculated, rendered and displayed by Asobo.  I have time on my hands.
