Clouds and lighting in 2024 a bit puzzling

Maybe something to do with the moon illusion that is experienced in real life? The sim trying to simulate the actual size of the moon whereas we see it as larger than it really is in reality?

I didn't know this was even a thing to be honest!

I have no idea why it's the way it is but I'd love to see it restored to a bit smaller than in 2020 as right now, TBCH, it's kind of a joke and not a funny one at that!  I truly hope something in my setup somehow makes this happen as I don't see a lot of comment about it.

  • This is live weather too (near LPPT, not edited and no filters), It looks good to me and I never seen anything like this with MSFS 2020 live weather.

I'm sure not everyone is going to find it as impressive as I do, but I'm continually floored by how much fidelity you can get out of the sim. On a bit of a whim I decided to go on a morning tour

Honestly the real time weather engine of MSFS franchise is not yet capable of render a believable and authentic skyscape. There is a time (MSFS 2020 pre-SU7) when the overall atmosphere representation

Noel, your real life perception of the size of the moon actually does change as per the article posted.

There is no 'one size' to how we perceive the moon in real life.

Don't really care my friend.  Moreover, there is most def a one size when it comes down to a PC screen in a flight sim and that is however the FS was produced to create that.  I want to see a plausible moon in the night sky and this is anything but.  Remember:  2020 was pretty dang close to what I see when I look up at the night sky.  Now, it's a bad joke!   This is straight up when the moon will be smallest in RL but the same is true when it's 45 degrees up in front of the plane's VC windscreens.  That's not a planet that is the half moon.

The clouds in MSFS 2024 look realistic enough. There may be some edge cases, but I think the edge cases are few and rare.

This is the point that gets me puzzled. For the most part the clouds and lighting produce some stunning skies in 2024, so why this focus on those rarer 'popcorn' clouds.  The image from @Alvega above is simply stunning - different cloud types at varying levels with lighting not possible in 2020.

Your image looks well and truly zoomed out.  Is your field of view set for a realistic view of the world/moon?

I have to say the amount of sharpening you are using almost hurts my eyes!

That image doesn't look like what my screen looks like it's the sharpening and compression used before sending to an image hosting site.  When I looked at it I felt the same way.

For zoom factor it's at 50% in all views as it was in 2020 and again from within the VC it's the same tiny moon.  That would be great if there is a setting causing this and I have to believe that must be the case as it's just too weird.

I do like bright clear views with crisp edges where applicable for sure.  That is what the real world looks like to me out in the bright Colorado Rockies sun.  One slider under the Details filter is called 'Clarity' and it really makes the image look like the RW, not a computer screen video and I truly detest soft edges that start to look like one needs bump up in their glasses prescription!  TBC most of the effect is in the VC with modest effects outside.  I've not found a better way to get the VC very visible whereas often it is too dark for my tastes.

How did you get to 50%?  I sit 60cm away from a 32in monitor and the correct FOV is 73.

I've always preferred that in 2020 so just resumed that here.  I read in one setup guide that was a good place to put that.  And important:  the moon in 2020 if anything bordered on too big.  I hope they increase the size to just under how 2020 is.

I just asked The Oracle this question:  What is the recommended zoom value to use for MSFS 2024? It has zoom value for cockpit, external and showcase camera views?

It answered:

Cockpit View:

  • Default Setting: The default zoom level is typically set to 50. This setting offers a broad view of the cockpit but may introduce a slight fish-eye effect.

It goes on to cover other views like your preference but I had read this somewhere way long ago, FSX days and I've preferred also what it does to sharpening imagery, if only by making things farther away, ever since.  So it's really the default view.  One feature we lost I forget when but it was very cool:  in the external view you could differentially zoom the external world view and the plane.  It might have died with FSX from the prior version.

A fish eye view is what I see from your screenshot (thus on screen items will appear smaller than real world).  A realistic FOV will give you a correct sense of speed, size and distance.

1.  Get your correct FOV here

2.  On this page you can look up the correct zoom level for MSFS.

I've tried diff zoom values and I prefer zoomed out for sharper imagery and a faster sense of speed.  Been at it over 30y...

Therefore the moon will be smaller, as will everything else.  If the view is zoomed out too far, a 65kt approach will feel like 100kts plus all buildings, distance, depth etc will all be out of wack.

Perhaps this is the reason why you like way over sharp images, because you have got used to it over time.

And why is it that the moon is 80% larger at the same zoom value of 50% in 2020?  And in P3D as well?  And FSX before it?  They changed it that's why and it sucks!  That's right I dial in exactly what looks and behaves to my liking, not to someone else's standard.  Even at 100% zoom value the moon is still too small!  They overcooked it in the wrong direction.  That's right as well, you've gotten used to overly blurred edges over time.

What MSFS 2024 is not capable of is rendering all the various types of clouds.  But no flight simulator is capable of doing that, to the best of my understanding, because modern hardware is not powerful enough to render all the various types of clouds.  For the clouds that MSFS 2024 can render, I think they look real enough to me.

True, if only there hadn’t been the period early and about one year after the release in MSFS2020 when it was actually evident that the technology is capable of rendering and handling much, much more realistic clouds and the associated visibility and shadow effects.
