When I zoom into trees, I can see my viewpoint shacking. When I set my VR headset on the table and zoom into the trees, there is no shaking. So it appears that VR is way too sensitive to micro head movements. Anything associated with shimmers or bad AA will then be exacerbated.

couple of things then:

xroads road LOD + ortho for the win, ortho doesn't have the AA issues, so the sooner you can fade into it the better.

yeah, most of that sounds like a VR head tracking issue, should report that to whoever provides your VR drivers.
