X-Plane 12.2 Beta 1 is out

Featured Replies

Feeling is feeling and can't really be explained.

I fly both XPlane 12 and MSFS 2020 in VR and none of them feel more fake than the other. XPlane12 was "looking" more fake until this last version in which the lighting and cloud finally start to look spectacular just like in MSFS, so I'm happy in both sims. Both of them have a bit of lag depending on what I do, but that's purely related to my aging hardware. Anything else is more related to personal bias.

  • Didn't take long for the first person to come in here posting something wrong...with a BETA.   Maybe I can rephrase your post, @efis007 "I downloaded it, understanding it was the first

clouds not being visible at night unless there's Moonlight 😕

You mean clouds illuminated by city lights? I think that's the only thing missing in X-Plane.

In non-urban areas, clouds not being visible at night without moonlight sounds right to me.

Triple post.

Exactly, above or near cities, even routes with lighting, or any sources of light even away from big urban areas, lower level clouds should be visible.

Above urban areas then, that's a must.

XP does feel more fluid, less on rails, but scenery looks terrible, especially in VR.

The lighting/shadows does look spectacular, only problem it morphs and moves with your viewpoint, looks weird. Not sure if it's a bug.

You top that off with the scenery vibrating and shimmering in the foreground. It's not that noticeable in 2D, but it's very obvious in VR.

Very noticeable when on the ground using a large 4K monitor.

Ok some other things about this upgrade. There have definitely been some unannounced scenery changes, textures and mesh. So here is flight into York Island in the Torres Straight in Australia today. First the whole Torres Straight looked more than reasonable. (Still will need orpho to capture the extensive reef system there) But York Island had really changed - used to be a lot of daggy european trees a tar road with incessant traffic beside the runway and those stupid european street light poles. Not in 12.2 all gone York Island is now coconut trees, runway undulation is captured and roads and lights are gone. No other addon to do this so it had to come from changes within XP12.2 so looking up.

York Island this morning

Inbound to York just recording the way the real time weather was functioning - typical Torres Straight Day cloud, showers etc.  Winds variable as expected.

I think the shimmering which is typical of XP won't really improve until they can implement motion vectors in the graphic engine. We know they are working on this so eventually this will be fixed, could be several years away though.
