MSFS 2024 is infuriating. Performance is a coin toss.

Featured Replies

You would think performance would be better since you can't see plane and ship traffic.   Or have they got the traffic thing straightened out yet?  Been rolling with 2020 lately till at least SU3 lol or maybe SU4.

It has moments but those are extremely rare, in my full fibre experience.

Maybe the heading is a little unfair, but it comes from frustration that is justifiable

It is not a rare occurance.

With all the updates and add-ons it is no wonder it can become a word not allowed shoot.

I have not been able to land for 2 weeks and it has become extremely frustrating.

I have made no changes to my hardware or software

Extremely rare..hmmm

It is to be fair pretty stable for the most part despite ny frustration at the moment.

Curious how they would sporadically impact performance though?

I've had similar setup a few years ago, 47 USB devices (when using P3D) and now I'm down to only about 11.  What happens is one (or more) of the devices can start transmitting data slowly and/or power cycle.  USB uses CRC checksum (Cyclic Redundancy Check) to detect errors, bad packets are resent which can cause what visually looks like very slow input ... this can cause issues with flight sims (especially MSFS).  Slapped up this video to demonstrate the issue (see slow response ... bars moving):

USB and motherboard implementations are horrible, it's why full size cockpit builders move away from the USB spec completely.  Like I've suggested before, I wish the USB spec would die and we all move to TCP/IP with RJ45 or SFP+ with fiber.

EDIT: as a rule of thumb I go thru the process of checking all my controllers that MSFS uses prior to starting MSFS 2024.

Ha, didn't realize that was you Rob...  Thank you!  I do  the same before every flight and I have also got into the habit of shutting down each USB port on the hub before I start Windows and then enable each port individually to make sure there are no initialization errors...

I will say, MSFS handles devices being added/removed mid flight much more gracefully than previous sims thank goodness.

I remember the dread of hearing the USB disconnect sound in P3D and the whole flight being wasted.  At least in MSFS just plug it back in and go.

The other thing I have found, especially with the TPR pedals is I needed to actually physically ground them!!  Couldn't get through a flight without them disconnecting, physically grounded them to my rig and no more issues.  Same with the Opencockpit modules.  I've actually put a piece of cardboard in between each of the modules because if they touch metal to metal they can disconnect.

It's like the level of shielding in these devices is nil...

Edit:  Yes, the thought of a TCP/IP based controller system would be phenomenal!!!  Combine the transport with POE and I could have a single cable running to a 48 port rack mounted switch for my entire sim and office setup.

Interesting, I do have TPR pedals and they currently aren’t grounded to anything.  If designed correctly they really shouldn’t need to be grounded.  If you haven’t already, might want to run some USB testers on the cables and/or ports for continuity and voltage.

USB has been so bad to me I bought one of these USBHub3C with monitoring software.  I wish I could say it was just one motherboard and PCIe card I had issues with, but the reality is they all seem to not work as they should when many devices are added.

Anyway, sounds like you know the drill … just one of many potential sources of “stutters” and bad performance experiences.

Appreciate it!

It's something they are prone to and was a suggestion from their support when I reached out for RMA.  After grounding never had an issue so never RMA'd...

2. Static Electricity:
  • Grounding:
If you're using the pedals with a metal sim rig, static electricity can cause disconnects. Grounding the rig can help alleviate this issue. You can use a grounded outlet and connect an alligator clip to the pedals and the other end to the outlet.
  • Static Dissipative Mat:
Consider using a static dissipative mat under your pedals to further minimize static buildup.

I concur. These emotional topic titles should have appended something like "for me" or "on my system".

Absolutely, and anyone praising 2020 should have to say “for me”. What a joke. Someone sharing problems with 2024 makes you emotional? Some of you 2024 boosters are a liitle thin skinned or just take things too personally.

It’s just how people are when they’re a fan of something. Any criticism instantly becomes a personal attack against themselves. Whether it’s Fenix, PMDG or even outside flightsim like a  TV show, or other gaming fandoms.

As someone still on 2020 and yet to transition to 2024 I find these type of threads (they come up quite frequently) rather discouraging.  My only experience with 2024 comes from the visuals in YT videos which seem no better than 2020 and sometimes worse.  A couple of days ago I had an early evening departure from NZWN and the sunset colours were stunning very realistic and I ask myself how could 2024 improve on this?

I have installed and then uninstalled 2024 3 times. Only did it for some aircraft I like that are not in 2020. Didn’t learn my lesson the first two time. Lots of problems, and the terrible controller interface was enough to make you tear hair out. Unbelievable that they made it so completely unintuitive you need to find tutorials to figure it out at all.

With 2020 having better looking more realistic scenery in my eyes except in some VFR, better LOD, no stuttering every other time you try to land even with 50 AI aircraft on the ground, no objects popping in, is a no brainer to stay with 2020. I am still buying lots of scenery and planes for 2020 because it will be a long time before I give it another look.

Last time I disliked 2024 so much that I formatted the drive it was on and did a system restore so that no trace of it would remain. I would quit the hobby I have enjoyed for almost 40 years if 2024 was the only sim available.

For me the biggest 2024 pita is key assignments. I have never really figured them out and find myself on 2020 much more often as a result.

I used the 2020 regression (or whatever it was called) for keyboard when I tried 2024, and had to add some assignments that 2024 requires. It was the controller configuring that killed me.

Does anyone know if SU3 addresses the controller interface and bugs?

There is a time when things finally click, and when that time comes, doing control assignments becomes a cinch. Also, Beta 3 made big improvements but you still need to get over the initial hump to get comfortable with the new way to assign controls. Having said that, I still think that 2020 was much easier as is, and overall, 2024 offers no improvement, just a frustrating learning curve 😅
