  1. Would it really, though? The Police (in the UK at least) I think have a pretty good record of dealing with stress/depression and I guess unless you're something like a firearms officer you don't have that much risk of losing your career from it. I would think that in pretty much all cases you'd just be moved to a desk job. I don't think a pilot has that option open to them. Also (again, in the UK), pilots get paid a lot more than police officers so it is more likely that they will have a higher standard of living to service; by that I mean a larger mortgage, children possibly at private school etc.
  2. Agree with what you're saying in the final para. Apologies if this has already been covered but it seems that mental health for a pilot presents a unique (perhaps?) set of problems. Are there any other careers (well paid ones at that) where putting your hand up to admit that you're struggling puts your whole career and livelihood at risk? This must weigh down pretty hard on the shoulders of the newly qualified if they feel they're not coping well. What happens to the £80k+ they still owe for their training and ratings etc? Is there any insurance to cover that? If not then that kind of thing could be a contributing factor. Who knows though, as I said, it's a unique set of problems, and I have no idea what the answer is.
  3. Hit the nail on the head there. We're not their target market.
  4. I don't think even collusion is needed. What it comes down to is the fact that at some point there is a single person with sole responsibility for X number of lives - whether that be remotely, from the flight deck, driving a bus, driving a train etc - and as you quite rightly said earlier, if that person chooses to deliberately do something, then there's not a lot you can do. Other than to take a step back and try to work out why they did it, and fix that instead. Unfortunately that's a lot harder to do.
  5. Hmmm. A little strange. Unless he means having a decent PC means it will just be nicked? Anyway I have no simming social groups to attend, not sure I'd want to even though I believe there is a decent sized one around Gatwick, where I work.
  6. Don't disagree with that in any way. My point is that it's not a solution, it just changes the problem slightly. No pilot on board makes it physically impossible for the 'pilot' (or whoever the person is that controls the aircraft remotely) to commit suicide and take everyone else with him/her. Instead it just means that someone that is mentally unstable can kill a plane load of people (if not more) without dying themselves. Is that any more/less likely to happen?
  7. Controlled by whom or what though? Totally automated isn't going to happen and whilst there is a human element controlling an aircraft there will be an ability to deliberately crash it. Just because the said individual isn't on the aircraft in question (and therefore it isn't 'suicide') doesn't mean it couldn't happen.
  8. This is now coming from the investigators, not the news channels speculating.
  9. Hypoxia. Depends how rapid it is/was, unconscious first.
  10. Sorry, being confusing! I mean me - I have no problems with texture loading, but then I don't have any FTX products.
  11. btw the debris field was about a hectare, not 5 miles
  12. This. No texture loading problems. But then no FTX...
  13. Where have you read that the debris field is 5 miles?!
  14. That's confusing in itself - do you mean using an AM that ends xxxxxx11? Anyway you've made an assumption that HT will be turned on (or you've got a 8 core processor), which is what the question is about, rather than 'what should the AM be?'.
  15. There's been a lot of chat about affinity masks of late, and how we should set them, what values to use etc. What doesn't seem to have been answered (at least not fully) is a step back from that - should we have hyperthreading turned on or off in the first instance? Can P3D make use of the additional cores, or does the overhead (which there must be, at least in terms of scheduling) mean that it's more trouble than it's worth? Does it differ between people's individual setups?
  16. Don't worry though, I am paying for my sins! Typical evening before I bought a payware aircraft: 1. Put small offspring to bed. 2. Have dinner. 3. Fire up the PC whilst my better half watches TV or reads etc. 4. Choose a PA320 to fly, choose route via built in planner. 5. Follow ATC, fly route, accelerate time if I want to do the landing, save it and do it tomorrow, probably former. 6. Land, feel satisfied. 7. Go to bed. After payware purchase: 1. Put small offspring to bed. 2. Have dinner. 3. Fire up the PC whilst my better half watches TV or reads etc. 4. Launch PFPX and load calc. 5. Do flight planning. 6. Launch P3D and start flight. Must be 'cold and dark' otherwise I'm not a pro 7. Spend an age inputting the flight plan, performance calcs etc etc whilst my better half asks why the man keeps saying 'oeufs' with a French accent - it's not, I have a French accent sound set and he's just saying 'off' 8. Take off without consulting ATC :o , following SIDs etc, occasionally dodging oncoming planes when there's a conflict between PFPX and AI arrival runway. 9. Get to TOC, and realise that it's about 5 mins from bedtime. 10. Close down everything (saving flight doesn't work). 11. Go to bed frustrated from not being able to complete anything more than a hop from Gatwick to CDG. Tonight I will be attempting EGKK-LPFR for literally the 6th time I think, but I'm not holding out much hope. However it is all carried out in the most high quality manner now I have payware
  17. I have the following: P3D 2.5 on 2nd hotfix REX Essential Plus (P3D extra License) REX4 Texture Direct No ASN, no Opus, no FSGRW, no REX Soft Clouds I was using REX4TD for textures, but gave up as they just didn't look right (pre-2.5 reinstall). REXE+ doing the weather injecting. After installing 2.5 I used the default cloud textures for a while, but stilling using REXE+ for weather injecting. Wasn't happy with how they looked (fairly sure I was experiencing the popcorn ones) so installed a HD set from REXE+. Still get popcorn clouds. I was going to say go figure but that's not the case; it's clear that it's not the texture applications (though obviously some cloud sets will exacerbate the problem), and it's likely that those that do change to REXE+ or OD and think they're successful are having false positives. The problem then would seem to be with the P3D weather engine, or what the weather engines are injecting into it.
  18. Used to use it fully when flying default and freeware planes. Now that I have gone to the dark side and only fly the Aerosoft Airbus (sorry Bjoern, I remember you backing me up when I was fighting the freeware aircraft corner ) I don't use it at all, I just use SIDs and STARs and whichever runways PFPX assigns the flight plan, oh and I do my best not to crash into the AI.
  19. Good and bad for me, though mainly good. Good: finally they appear to have fixed the massive framerate drop that happened at sunrise/sunset. General performance and smoothness feel better. Terrain shadows properly fixed however... Bad: no fault of LM I guess but having fixed the terrain shadows it has highlighted that my system isn't man enough for them - I get stutters if I have them on so they are switched off. But most other settings are max/near max.
  20. FWIW I had the issue (with Geneva) and did as instructed (re-ran the Add On Manager installer without needing to re-download it) and it fixed the problem.
  21. Yeah I think they do as I've bought a couple of things from them and they appear on your CC/Paypal as Mastertronic! Edit: I also echo what Robert has said about sound causing stutters along with big scenery loads. Not a huge amount you can do mitigate them either. Always used to get a big pause just before default ATC gave me my ILS approach clearance.
  22. Just started using DSRx2.0 20% smoothing, FXAA off and very impressed!
  23. 2.5 running rather well on my modest machine (better than 2.4 did). Terrain shadow casting is an absolute killer though.
