Rob - Thanks for the Guide
This must have taken many hours to compile and write. I've just read the simconnect chapter, about 9 pages of concise understandable detail. It is excellent. Outstanding contribution, Rob. Thank you

Philips 40-Inch 4K Monitor. Pros & Cons?
fireone replied to martinlest2's topic in Video Hardware: Monitors | Multi-Monitors | Video Cards | Drivers etcIts a very good monitor. I've had mine for about 6 weeks . I bought it sight unseen, based on reviews in different fora. I run it with a GTX 980 Ti .and run it at its PC native ,4K resolution, similar to YMMB I sit one and a half arms length from it. I'm not sure if your 970 GTX card would manage to give you good fps , running the Philips and a second smaller monitor . Color reproduction is beautiful, there is no lag running flight sims , Xplane at night looks terrific especially at dusk and dawn. , as does P3d 2.5 in daytime . The images are very sharp. Its a great buy . Whilst I cannot afford it , if i had the money I would buy a second to produce a giant screen .

Personal first impression
WarpD you were asked a perfectly reasonable question after some preliminary testing by the OP If you could list the items we should expect to see in real life as opposed to on paper, we would all appreciate it.

P3D training features

Rob ,

I rate my answer as being a bit more useful than the:

go to the website or read the manual or go to the sdk type of answer unless they are referenced with a chapter and page which has the answer. That would be very useful and a top answer.

Those types of answers assume, as in this case , the OP has not done these things.

My reference to xplane is not a p3d vs xplane thing and of course Xplane doesn't advertise its weaknessses.

As a qualified IFR pilot I find the after flight feedback xplane gives me more useful for this purpose . This is a partial or tangential answer to the OPs question. That is where I was going with it. I admit that on reading his initial post, If he was intersted in flying that kind of aircraft at some stage he would be under IFR rules .

In fact FlyElite is the best in my opinion for this kind of training also used by many training institutions .

And yes VgBaron I admit I don't know how to do it in spite of many hours of trying and I admit I may not be drawing out the maximum that is possible from P3D for my intended training purposes. I'll go back to it and see where the instructions are , clearly I've missed something .

P3D training features
Laminar's website is but one point of reference . The OP is entitled to canvas opinions from others who use P3D for training purposes, whatever they maybe . Not unexpectedly, the LM website promotes it's products virtues not so much its weaknesses. In my opinion OP, P3D is not great as an IFR trainer ,as an example, no matter what the website says. Reason; the ability to reproduce side view traces of the flight path to determine how well an approach was made , how altitude was maintained what the trace of the holding pattern looks like are not as well done as Xplane. OP keep asking your questions , someone sooner or later will have the good grace to reply with a useful answer.

Pros & Cons of X Plane
Jimmy RFR's points summarise why I use Xplane, especially the comments on heli flying. I also find the reproduction of the flight in graphical mode very useful for studying an IFR flight . P3D and FSX are sorely lacking in this area. So for example you can examine how well: altitude was maintained , holding pattterns executed, and most important how well an approach was flown. Paradoxically , weather modelling in XP, as others have mentioned is not brilliant for an IFR sim.

Freeware Airport Recommendations
Any of the ISDG scenery is superb . I run Sydney Kingsford Smith YSSL , with the recommended addons and its my sim home base airport for helicopter flying. The runway detail is phenomenonal as far as textures , repairs , line markings , lighting is concerned.

My feeling about Orbx
Might be worth running some simple free utilities like CCcleaner which will check for remnants of partially installed files. I've used ccleaner for years and it often finds something left behind by the "official " uninstall utility supplied with whatever program I've just erased. In particular I would run the registry component of ccleaner. This may not solve the problem however if the tree download /install modified prexisting files , CCleaner will not find them.

New Driver, 350.12, (no foolin')
I bought a GTX 970 using the oft stated advantage of these cards for flight simming. This after many happy years running flawless multimonitor FSX., xplane and any number of games using AMD and eyefinity . With Nvidia surround , my middle screen of three , on the display port always fails to switch on at cold start. It needs a restart to fire up. . I found It harder to setup nvidia multi monitor vs eyefinity .These are minor quibbles with multi monitor nvidia setup which I can overlook if the performance is there. But, I'd be pleased if someone found an advantage to AMD cards in P3d coz I'd be happy to buy one .

CeraSim Bell 412
Excellent discussion on simconnect proplems here, especially in the second half. http://forum.avsim.net/topic/463120-stutters-vsync-simconnect-a-possible-source-of-the-problem/

CeraSim Bell 412
Like MickeyJ dodosim works for me as well. I followed these instructions. http://www.hovercontrol.com/cgi-bin/ib3/ikonboard.cgi?s=642961e12b68df3b051783dec8c92844;act=ST;f=46;t=22665 3rd last post on page 1 , then installed legacy version of simconnect . The simconnect files are in the redistributable folder of the LM installation folder. You can check what version of simconnect you have installed by going to the control panel in windows and go to the uninstall programs folder. The simconnect version installed by p3d 2.5 ( i have no previous versions of p3d ) does not allow full functionality of dodosim on my system .
