July 7, 200916 yr I have some leftover bday money and I bought a Saitek keyboard with backlighting so I can finally fly at night. Right now I have an older CH throttle and a MS FFB2 joystick with twist as rudder. I can't get both but I would like opinions on Track IR (probably version 4 with track clip) OR a good set of pedals, maybe saitek or CH, but I noticed logitech had some really nice looking ones too. | My Liveries | FAA ZMP | PPL ASEL | | Windows 11 | MSI Z690 Tomahawk | 12700K 4.7GHz | MSI RTX 4080 | 64GB 6000 MHz DDR5 | 500GB Samsung 860 Evo SSD | 2x 2TB Samsung 970 Evo M.2 | EVGA 850W Gold | Corsair 5000X | HP G2 (VR) / LG 27" 1440p |

July 7, 200916 yr I suggest you go for the pedals, and then check out Freetrack, a solid alternative to Track IR:www.free-track.netIt's free, works great with many webcams, and if you happen to have a Wii remote, you can get performance on par with Track IR. "Even Ozzy's wagging his tail again. Liam who?"
July 7, 200916 yr It's really up to you to decide, but I would say that if you fly VFR light aircraft in the main and also use other sims such as aerial combat ones, go for Track-IR. If you fly mainly airliners go for the rudder pedals, since the mouse and spacebar is more than adequate for looking around an airliner cockpit. If you fly choppers it's tricky one, but I think Track-IR might be wiser for choppers even considering the control rudder pedals allow, as it is great for situational awareness.Al Alan Bradbury Check out my youtube flight sim videos: Here
July 7, 200916 yr Once you get TrackIR you'll never fly without it!! I really can't say that about R-Pedals.
July 8, 200916 yr Author One thing I wondered about TIR is the monitor. I have a single 19in 5:4 monitor. 1280x1024 res....Would TIR be worth it? AFAIK a lot of people have multi mon setups with TIR and I don't. Wondering if anyone uses a single monitor like me?And I have a window off to my left with a lot of light, would the sensors be baffled by the light or is it just a window behind me that I don't want?Is the TIR clip for the headset worth it? I don't use the headset a lot, maybe 30% of the time, mostly when on VATSIM. Are there any compatibility issues with Vista x64 and TIR?Also, does anyone know if you can get the rudder pedals from that new Logitech G940 separately from the rest of the pack?http://www.logitech.com/index.cfm/gaming/p...55&cl=us,enThose pedals look high quality - more so than the saitek and CH onesThanks for the info about the FreeTrack - I do have a Wiimote so let's see | My Liveries | FAA ZMP | PPL ASEL | | Windows 11 | MSI Z690 Tomahawk | 12700K 4.7GHz | MSI RTX 4080 | 64GB 6000 MHz DDR5 | 500GB Samsung 860 Evo SSD | 2x 2TB Samsung 970 Evo M.2 | EVGA 850W Gold | Corsair 5000X | HP G2 (VR) / LG 27" 1440p |

You can angle the tir away from the light-and if it is really sunny you might have to close the shades. If it was me-I'd get rudder pedals first-just adds a lot more reality to the sim imho. I have the same Ch pedals I bought when they first came out years ago-they are solid and trouble free. However they really don't have the "feel" like real pedals-I'd see if you can try alternatives out in a store to see how they feel. Geofa WANTED DEAD OR ALIVE-the best Flight Sim!
July 8, 200916 yr Like people said you have to see what you want from your simming, if you want a high fidelity sim then get the pedals, if you want really fun visuals get the TIR.I got the pedals before TIR but I use the sim to train for my pilots license. When you get both it will be sweet. Also consider Ebay maybe you can get used pedals and a TIR 4 for the price of both...
July 8, 200916 yr Track IR ALL THE WAY. Any pilot will tell you that THE most important thing while flying is situational awareness. I have rudder pedals, yoke and Track IR 4 (with a single monitor). I ALWAYS use the Track IR. You know what controller I use most often? An X-box controller. It gives me rudder pedal control as accurate as Saitek or CH Products rudder pedals, and it takes less space. Not that I'm knocking rudder pedals, if you can get both. But, you'll find that the PC stuff isn't the same as a real plane, and can actually screw you up if you are in training. And there is nothing like being able to turn your head as you turn final for getting that feeling of flying. Or to lean your head around to look at that pesky gauge behind the yoke. Once you try Track IR, you won't go back. Track IR first, Yoke and Pedals next. Or how about an XBox controller with the Track IR. Really. It's good. And less than 1/3 the cost of either the yoke or pedals, and does the job of both well in FS. You can check out http://www.flyingscool.com/XBox360_ControllerFSX.htm for how I set up my XBox controller.I don't know if the clip is worth it, I don't have one. I'm happy with the metal thingy on a baseball hat. And the hat fits fine over my headset when I use multiplayer.(P.S. I was under the impression that if you have multiple monitors, you don't need a Track IR) Tom Perry
July 8, 200916 yr I've seen TrackIR on multi-monitor set-ups, it's unbeliveably sweet. My own home monitor is a 7 year old 17 inch Hansol. They don't make them like Hansol any more! Truly a kind among manufacturers, if only I could embiggen the screen. I use TrackIR all of the time. The light filtering capabilities of the TrackIR have improved considerably over the years. Some situations might require some fiddling, but most users should be able to balance their TrackIR with the local light sources. The ClipPro is best used in low-light situations, or for maximum movement resolution. I also have the Saetek rudder pedals. As cool as rudders are in flight sim, FSX and FS9 also support differential toe brakes. Only the cheapest rudders won't support the toes brakes. Pedals with the toe option sure are fun.For the longest time, I used the racing pedals from my steering wheel as rudder pedals, and that works quire well. It's easy to set up in flight sim. I'd have a hard time choosing between TrackIR and pedals. I'd lean towards TrackIR because NaturalPoint is really good with product service, you can use it with other sims, and I gave it an AVSIM Gold Star of Excellence. Rudder pedals with toe brakes are an excellent investment as well. Taxi, approach, and take-off is so much better, and the taildraggers become way more fun to fly. The Piper Cub with rudder pedals and TrackIR is my absolute favourite way to fly. The only thing about rudder pedals is that there is quite a wide range in price and quality. I am happy with my Saetek pedals, but I consider them to be middling quality at best. On the other hand, I am not going to build a home cockpit in the near future (Angelique got all of the hot hardware assignments!), so the Saetek product more or less fills my rudder needs. Unless you purchase your pedals at a local store, you can really get soaked with shipping and handling charges, not so much with the tiny TrackIR. Jeff ShylukSenior Staff ReviewerAVSIM

Jeff ShylukSenior Staff ReviewerAVSIMIf you live in the US, go to Amazon.com. Most of the time shipping is free on pedals and/or yokes, and it's pretty hard to beat the price (usually around $99). Or buy them here at Avsim (I imagine they sell them here) and support a good cause. Tom Perry
July 8, 200916 yr AFAIK a lot of people have multi mon setups with TIR and I don't. Wondering if anyone uses a single monitor like me?As for the single monitor, I just bought a TIR last weekend, and I have only one monitor. Now that I've had a little more time with it, TIR truly adds a LOT to both situational awareness and suspension of disbelief. I am very happy with it, and I'm glad I bought it.As for which to buy, rudder pedals or TIR ... if I were you, I would get the rudder pedals. I have an MS FF2 with a twist rudder, and I never use it, as I also have CH Pro Pedals. The pedals certainly add another level of realism and is probably the better choice over a TIR. An added benefit of pedals, by the way, is using them for braking. With pedals, brakes can be applied to left or right or both wheels, and pressure can be varied: partially applied, fully applied, etc. With a joystick, to the best of my knowledge, brakes are on/off only.By the way, it's too bad that you can't get both ... :-) Have you checked eBay? Joel Murray @ CYVR (actually, somewhere about halfway between CYNJ and CZBB)
July 8, 200916 yr I vote for track IR. I've had both rudder pedals and a yoke in the past. I always seem to go back to using a joystick though. Track IR on the other hand isn't replaceable. As I've said many times, I would rather not fly than fly without my TIR4. Tired of Streetlights everywhere? Try MSFS DarkStreets today!
July 8, 200916 yr Author Or I could add another 150 bucks to the principal on my mortgage! :( Anyway I was looking at the TIR 4 bundle with the clip. How well does the TIR mount to your LCD monitor? Mine has a really thick bezel, probably 2.5 inches at least....Also does anyone use TIR without the clip for the headset? How well do the little reflectors work that you stick on a ballcap? Oh, one more thing I thought of is lighting. I use CFL in the office, would that mess up the IR sensors?I do want pedals but I only really want the pedals from that upcoming Logitech G940 package, and I don't know if they'll sell them separately from the throttle/stick combo | My Liveries | FAA ZMP | PPL ASEL | | Windows 11 | MSI Z690 Tomahawk | 12700K 4.7GHz | MSI RTX 4080 | 64GB 6000 MHz DDR5 | 500GB Samsung 860 Evo SSD | 2x 2TB Samsung 970 Evo M.2 | EVGA 850W Gold | Corsair 5000X | HP G2 (VR) / LG 27" 1440p |
