July 25, 200916 yr One of the negative sides of the old Avsim FSX forum was the amount of "vitriol" that tended to appear in topics. Sometimes I used to feel squeemish when reading thru some of the dialogues. Now after the terrible hacking incident and subsequent revival by dedicated leaders and fellow simmers, we seem to have re-established a forum that shows respect, interest, helpfulness and above all integrity. We seem to have ridded ourselves of the opinonated brethren !A pleasure to view, read and feel as though one can post a topic without fear of being shouted down.Am I alone in thinking this?Joy of joysRespectjjc
July 25, 200916 yr Altough it was somehow " entertaining " at times, i too notice the nicer atmosphere of the forum lately; might be cause by the crash, since some people might have found other venues to vent there frustrations :( Alain from Montreal
July 25, 200916 yr Ya go read the PMDG forums if you still want to run into some of the old crew. Chips on all the shoulders.

Right or wrong in our responses/comments, we are all trying to help others enjoy this hobby. I hope it continues.Best regards,Jim Young
July 25, 200916 yr A few things have happened. Avsim got hacked which non of us would have ever thought would happen, Aces got shut down leaving all of us with a new desire to uphold this hobby, and the reality that FSX may be the last of the enjoyable legacy versions of Flight Simulator we've grown to enjoy and build upon. All the strife really hit full steam after FSX's release. Some of us were flabbergasted at the state it was in and what little it offered many of us. This split the community in half not only forum wise but the add-on market as well. Before FSX's release most dialog on this and other forums was civil for the most part. All we had was FS9. Avsim was ground zero for the major grips concerning FSX. Then came the various patches and the length of time on the market it became useless to talk much about FSX. Aces stated they would no longer update FSX and we all settled into what was here hoping for a better effort in FS11. Next was Aces closure which sent shock waves throughout the community. This hit us hard as we were already divided, some banned, and others just stopped posting and/or using FS altogether. I've known many that put the sim down after FSX so we were hurting and this made it worse. Then Avsim get's hacked... All strife aside this was all but kicking us while we were down. This hurt us in ways unimaginable. Without the file library the constant flow of new add-ons has been cut back 75%. Most freeware developers simply refuse to upload their work to other sites like Flightsim.com. The more time goes by the more our freeware add-on developers move on to other things. So here we are today with an understanding this whole thing is delecate. If we don't take care we'll loose the whole community. We are nice to people, the fly by night crowd is all but gone, and we're left with making since of the two sims we have left (FS9/FSX). The future is uncertain as the younger crowd in all of our various societies shun anything that requires the slightest amount of brain power. I've watched more ambitious sims like EF2000, Falcon 4.0, and Janes fighter sims go by way of the boneyard because the average gamer crowd was just too dense to comprehend something outside of a no-plot shootem up. Stratagy combined with actual flying skill was too much for them... Flight Simulator lasted through all this coming from an era when technology was marveled at versus expected and entitled to just be there. Computers are the norm today but when FS 1.0 came out they were novelties. Most of us who've been around FS since the 80's are getting older and the kids today just don't have the desire to achieve like generations before. Kids today want games depicting street gang warfare, grand theft auto, and sadistic cult like realities (don't get me wrong there are exceptions out there concerning our youth but you have to look at what's selling). We in this community see the world around us and understand there's a bigger picture to all that has happened and is happening. So today we just want to keep this hobby alive for those who love flight. I offer up my perspective as I'm now able to fly in real life. Everyone knows my sim of choice. Just the same I want kids who would love to fly to have a tool that has helped me so much throughout the years. We may have in FSX what happened with Falcon 4.0 (Allied Force). Years later that sim is still around with a cult following for those who really want to know what fighter combat is really like. There will always be those of us who look up at the airliners flying overhead wondering what it's like to do that. We have at our fingertips that reality for the home PC. So today we support all of our Flightsim sites no matter past descrepencies and our developers. Together we need to weather this storm and hope the interest in General Aviation real world and virtual resurfaces like it once was. We hope Avsim get's the library back up 'soon' so our freeware developers don't find other things to do to occupy their creative time. And last but not least embrace both sims FSX and FS9 for the advantages both sims bring. The sooner the day comes FSX runs just as smooth as FS9 does today with all sliders maxed with add-ons the better off we'll all be. The day we all are on one sim again is half the overall issue. New hobbiest have one sim to go to without issue and from there we can build outstanding work that may make Microsoft reconcider their move. Contrary to what some may say Flight Simulator needs a big stable company like Microsoft to put the dollars into development to push the envelop and franchise along. Most don't understand the cost that went into FS9 let alone FSX (let alone the many version before FS9). We're talking millions in development cost for this franchise over the years. No startup company can just come in and do that much less match that. The good thing about FSX is graphically it's poised to stand the test of time more so than FS9 would have before it. Once we get over the performance hurdle it'll hold it's own for at least the next 10 years. We just have to keep it running on the various OS's that will appear during that time. So all in all this understanding by all of us said and not said has made for a much more understanding friendly environment on all the various FS related forums... July 25, 200916 yr Hello"The sooner the day comes FSX runs just as smooth as FS9 does today with all sliders maxed with add-ons the better off we'll all be"That day is already here and has been for quite a while, on the right hardware.

It won't work. Ever.I've decided to stop spending any of my time on his opinions. I really have MUCH better things to do, like enjoy FSX. July 25, 200916 yr but less forum users means less buyers of addon products and a smaller market, companies closing down or slowing release schedules. There are some negatives. Hopefully the economy will start picking up and also computer prices will be low enough for everyone to have a system very capable of running fsx
July 25, 200916 yr There does seem to be a breath of fresh air in this place imho. The main thing we all need to remember is that when someone is determined to find drama where there is none, simply do not to play the game with them.Soon enough they tire of hearing the sound of their own voice and move on to other forums where they can get all the attention, controversy, and drama they desire.Other than that, I think the biggest pitfall that some become victims of is that they take themselves to seriously. When we treat each other as equals, no matter our personal credentials or areas of expertise, things very rarely go "wrong".Peace and respect, to everyone here at AVSIM (except for "Chock", because we all know that he has an attitude problem far beyond any help, professional or otherwise . . . B) :( ).J/K, You know we love 'ya Al, right? :( :(
July 25, 200916 yr I think you were right the first time, I'm beyond help.On a more serious note though, I do think the fact that AVSIM was gone for a short while made people realise what a fun thing they had, and of course we never really appreciate what we've got until it is gone. The fact that many people were prompted to offer donations to get it back is probably what has contributed to a slightly noticeable shift over to 'pleasant mode' on the forums, because now many people feel there is a little part of themselves in AVSIM, which indeed there is.My bit is the third from the left flashing blue LED on the front bit of the server, just near where the wires go in.Al Alan Bradbury Check out my youtube flight sim videos: Here

July 26, 200916 yr kiwikat, I've kept quiet the last week reading over your posts but now I can't hold myself back. You have no respect for anyone that has different opinions then you and as soon as something doesn't agree, you look for any way to start an argument that no one can win. Please reserve yourself...a little disheartening that you would start up again in a topic that is trying to show how we as a community have gotten more respectful and tolerant of each other. :( - Red E8500 @ 4.1 | EVGA 275GTX (overclocked) | 2x2GB Mushkin Enhanced Redline @ 1066 | Samsung 24inch LCD @ 1920x1080 |
