September 22, 200916 yr Hi,maybe this is a dumb question, but I'm thinking about replacing Pentium IV 3.6 GHz CPU with a faster one. This will then be a dual-core type or quad-core-type. (I know...... I will have to replace the motherboard as well)As I understand not all programmes (software) will be affected by such a change as they aren't programmed to que up tasks with multi-core-technology.What about FS9 ? If I replace the single 3.6 GHz CPU with lets say a Core 2 duo 3.33 GHz - which should result in about 6 GHz processor speed; will I get a FS9 performance in accordance with this upgrade ?Carl

A core 2 Duo 3.33 Ghz will not give you 6 Ghz in FS9 or any software. However these Core 2 chips and the I7 Chips are much more efficient then the old Pentium chips. Even with a Core 2 running at 2.4ghz you will see a huge boost over the old P4 running at 3.6 ghz. Rob Rob Prest
September 22, 200916 yr When I replaced my 2.4 P4, 256mb AGP, with a 2ghz, C2 Duo, 256mb pcie. ... Huge difference.Bob Bob i5, 16 GB ram, GTX 960, FS on SSD, Windows 10 64 bit, home built works anyway.

September 22, 200916 yr Commercial Member What about FSX?Lot of rumors I've been reading that FSX needs a high clock speed, and a dual core 3.0 Ghz is better than a new i7 quad core at say, 2.3?Yes clock speed is very important, but there are so many other factors involved. In your case I would say buy the i7 get a good cooling system and overclock it. Raiky, your comments could be misleading to users here that don't fully understand how these processors work.In certain cases (for example mine running applications on multiple machines) the Dual core would be a better option.RegardsRob Rob Prest

This is esp true for fs9. From all the research I've seen, and a bit of common sense, I beleive you're better of getting a faster lastest generation core duo then a quad. ps....2.5 quad 'pissing' all over a 4ghz dual...you must be kidding... - Red E8500 @ 4.1 | EVGA 275GTX (overclocked) | 2x2GB Mushkin Enhanced Redline @ 1066 | Samsung 24inch LCD @ 1920x1080 |

That would be the day when quad 2,5 beats core2duo 4,0 in FS9. I have [email protected], and trust me, no quad at 2,5 can beat it. OC quad to 4,0, sure, beats the c*ap out of it, but other than that...Just shows to go ya, don't believe everything you read on the internet, or is it Internet?regards,JoeMany misleading things on the "Internet".
September 22, 200916 yr FS9 runs in a single thread and cannot make use of multiple physical CPUs (multi core) or virtual CPUs (hyperthreading). But it can, and does, benefit greatly from the technological improvements that come along with the dual/quad core CPUs.But that said, it's not as simple an issue as number of cores, or of clock speed either.A Conroe or Penryn Core2Duo at the same clock speed as your pentium 4 will massively outperform it because of the improved design of the CPU, which allows multiple instructions to be pipelined simultaneously.FS9 running on some of the newer quads can marginally outperform the dual-core CPUs at a given clock speed because they have larger high-speed memory caches. And the Core i7 quads perform even better due to their large caches, relocation of the memory controller to the CPU chip, triple vs dual channel RAM, and other architectural improvements. But given that FS9 runs in a single thread, clock speed does matter. A highly overclocked dual core Penryn running at over 4 GHz can indeed run FS9 faster than any quad running at a stock 2.66 GHz clock freq. But it won't beat an overclocked 4.5GHz Core i7 with fast triple-channel RAM pushing triangles over a fast PCIe bus to a fast GTX285 with 1GB of fast VRAM.RegardsBob ScottColonel, USAF (ret)ATP IMEL Gulfstream II-III-IV-VColorado Springs, CO Bob Scott | President and CEO, AVSIM Inc ATP Gulfstream II-III-IV-V Sys1 (MSFS20+24/XPlane12+11): AMD 9800X3D, water 2x240mm, MSI MPG X670E Carbon, 64GB GSkill 6000/30, nVidia RTX4090FE Alienware AW3821DW 38" 21:9 GSync, 2x4TB Crucial T705 PCIe5 + 2x2TB Samsung 990 SSD, EVGA 1000P2 PSU, 12.9" iPad Pro Thrustmaster TCA Boeing Yoke, TCA Airbus Sidestick, Twin TCA Airbus Throttle quads, PFC Cirrus Pedals, Coolermaster HAF932 case Sys2 (P3Dv5/v4): i9-13900KS, water 2x360mm, ASUS Z790 Hero, 32GB GSkill 7800MHz CAS36, ASUS RTX4090 Samsung 55" JS8500 4K TV@60Hz, 3x 2TB WD SN850X 1x 4TB Crucial P3 M.2 NVME SSD, EVGA 1600T2 PSU Fiber link to Yamaha RX-V467 Home Theater Receiver, Polk/Klipsch 6" bookshelf speakers, Polk 12" subwoofer, 12.9" iPad Pro PFC yoke/throttle quad/pedals with custom Hall sensor retrofit, Thermaltake View 71 case, Stream Deck XL button box Sys3 (DCS/P3Dv4/ATS/ETS): AMD 7800X3D, MSI MPG X870E Carbon, Noctua NH-D15S, 64GB GSkill 6000/30, EVGA RTX3090 Alienware AW3420DW 34" 21:9 GSync, Corsair HX1000i PSU, 4TB Crucial T705 PCIe5 + 2TB Samsung 970Evo Plus, TM TCA Officer Pack, Saitek combat pedals, TM Warthog, TM RS300 FF wheel/pedals, Coolermaster HAF XB case
September 22, 200916 yr Bob,Recently I read a tip in PC Pilot magazine, aiming at FSX. I tried to apply it for FS9 and I can get both processors working for FS9 at the same time.Add the following to your FS9.cfg file (make a backup copy first) :[JOBSCHEDULER]AffinityMask=3With FS9 running, in Windows taskmanager, processes tab, right click on FS9.exe and click assign affinity (bottom line). You will see both processors checked, but only CPU0 is actually being used as you will see in the performance tab. Now, unclick CPU0. This effectively assigns all CPU1 power to FS and this could already improve your performance. Now, click CPU0 again (check on) and FS9 is effectively being run using BOTH processors. Check the performance tab.Try it, it works for me :(Best regards,Eric
September 22, 200916 yr I have to disappoint you, this trick actually costs you performance.FS9 runs on one core at a time. You only allow usage of more cores, and the difference between this scenario and staying on one core all the time is that you loose performance on core switching.

For FS9: the best CPU you can afford (if you can't afford i7, then get a fast quad or last generation C2D, the E8600), OC it the best you can, reach 4.0ghz+ and you are in heaven. Simple as that (considering CPU ONLY). And do run it on the first core.
September 22, 200916 yr I know this has been talked about to death but you folks in here seem very knowledgable..so I'll run this by you guys once, and a simple no or yes answer will be plenty. Is there any true benefit to unchecking 1 of the cores on my dual core when running fs9? - Red E8500 @ 4.1 | EVGA 275GTX (overclocked) | 2x2GB Mushkin Enhanced Redline @ 1066 | Samsung 24inch LCD @ 1920x1080 |
