5870 / BP=0 - Great fps improvement by lowering to 2xAA

Featured Replies

Agree, how can anyone stand the look of 2xAA?We are really at the low end here IMO.Sure you will get high FPS with lower settings, LOL!But I prefer a balanced Sim-experience, smoothness above all, and OK IQ.That's possible even with 20-25 FPS, if your system is set-up the right way. Here's a guide - for both XP and Windows 7:http://www.simforums.com/forums/forum_post...D=198077#198077Do it that way, you won't regret it!
Yes, you can use floating IPs to continue your stupid, childish and rather obsessional game if you have nothing else to do (...)But we'll track you and lock your account again and again.Your behavior here is really pitiful and pathetic.

I think its funny you all getting these big bad GPU's/CPU's, ect and all I have been reading lately on this forum is 2x AA or no AA, lower LOD or Lower AG or this or that ect ect. No wonder you are all seeing such big FPS boosts (which mean absolutely nothing, zip, nada in FSX). Please dont get me wrong, I do promote tweeking and such in FSX but come on... no AA or VSYNC ect. Not to mention that 1/2 of the current tweeks floating around no nothing at all in FSX and if anything are only masking a issue somewhere else in the system or settings not made properly.
Wise words!I guess some simmers have problem getting a smooth flight in FSX without these tweaks. But for people using high end systems this seems strange. But maybe the goal for some tweakers is to be able run FSX with as high fps as possible with maxed out sliders. Personally, if I get a smooth flight with good IQ and autogen at dense, I prefer that compared to lowering AA to be able to set autogen to very dense. But I guess that preferences vary a lot amongst simmers.Tweak on, gentlemen! But don't forget to do some flying as well :(

I made another post on some of the tweaks I was using to try and get IQ and speed (including BP=0):http://forums1.avsim.net/index.php?showtopic=282474One of the things I noticed is that bumping UP the AA on my 285 to combined 8xSQ got me near perfect IQ without a drop in frames. There really is a huge difference in the way the architecture of the ATI cards handle AA vs Nvidia...To the OP, what are your in game AA and AF settings?

This is an ATI card, not nvidia.Either way, each mode I used to test was after a restart of FSX.AA, except at its very highest levels, showed no impact to FPS, positive or negative between the lowest and middle quality settings for all modes of AA.

Are we sure that we allways make fair comparisons? It is my experience that changes in nHancer, like changing AA or AF, only take effect AFTER restarting FSX. Also I have the impression that once you have also made some kind of quality adjustment through the nVidia control pannel, you are no longer sure what setting you end up with. Remedy for controled testing and reporting effects: uninstall and re-install nHancer and quit FSX and restart after every change in nHancer settings.BNS

Agreed. Why does the phrase " My mind is made up, don't confuse me with facts" come to mind? Mathis Kok at Aerosioft had it right - want consistant 80 - 100fps? Turn off all the eye candy!Y'know what - it works!!!But it's REALLY ugly.I run NickN's settings, ENB, multi monitor, etc. etc. and for me, these tweaks are a BIG step down.

Yeah. Nick Needham's tuning guide for a system and FSX is very good.

I can confirm that using CCC (Catalyst Control Center) for a 5770 to force AA down to 2X (application managed allows FSX to set it at 16x) greatly improves framerates at almost no cost to visual quality. I was getting 20+ FPS at KJFK when with no tweaks to the CCC i was getting 9 FPS.

I am getting great performance with the bufferpools tweak, AffinityMask=14, prerender limit at 1, LOD Radius=6.5, Texture_Bandwidth_Mult=100, and 4xAA/8xAF/VSync ON. And my settings within FSX are nearly maxed out with SceneryTech, UTX, GEX, REX, and UT2 @ 100% airline traffic.

I saw absolutely zero difference between different AA settings in the default 172 at KSEA, except when I turned the AA to the max, which dropped everything down 2 FPS on average. I had max everything except water at med x 2 and clouds at high with 60 miles visibility. AI was at 100% with trafficx. Average FPS was around 11. I turned on catalyst AI and openGL Tripple Buffering on and got 2-3 more FPS. I admit my frames are lower than what I would expect from my machine which makes me wonder if I've done something wrong. Done the ******* buffer pool and general tweaks, so it all runs generally smooth... just lower FPS than I'd imagine I should be getting with all the power in my machine. However, Low and mid AA settings showed absolutely no change in FPS for me.
Something doesn't seem right as my system has very similar specs minus the GPU, and I get constant 30 fps in the default 172. You should try reducing some settings in FSX to bump up fps. I run maxed out cloud detail, maxed scenery sliders except for mesh resolution @ 10m, water at 2.x high, scenery complexity and autogen at very dense, no light bloom, no ground scenery shadows, and no airplane self shadowing. Also, no internal traffic except for minimum airport vehicles, and I find that UT2 @ 100% has almost no impact on fps for me.

Wow, there's been a lot of responses to this thread. :)I see so far one person has confirmed a nice fps boost by lowering AA (when using BF=0 I assume) with an ATI card. To you who can't understand why you would want to lower AA when you have a powerful GPU: To me framerate is more important that eyecandy. There's a certain nice 3d illusion when you have solid 60fps. And when using EZDOK the cockpit shakes feel very realistic and so does the aircraft handling (like the A2A Cub with it's great flightmodel) and I don't really notice difference in AA when things are in motion.

So you buy this really nice system and wonderful new video card which you can't use the full power of?Sounds like a plan to me... :( I actually care about my games looking nice.... and look how dated my system is!

With a 5870 set at 2xAA with Supersampling, I'm getting very good IQ (at par with my 285GTX) and smooth video. Worst frames so far were ~16 (but smooth) loaded to the gills with the PMDG 747 VC at FSDT's KJFK, 100% UT2 traffic, and five layers of heavy wx and rain. Typical is mid to high 20s on approach and 50-60 at altitude.I'm using FSX on Vista64, ATI Catalyst 10.3, BP=0, frames unlocked, water at 2xLow. System is an i7 at 4.4GHz and the 5870 is overclocked to 885/1290.Use of supersampling AA really does push the GPU hard, so I'm not getting the sense of having a lot of wasted capability sitting there. My system is the smoothest and most reliable it's been in months.RegardsBob ScottColonel, USAF (ret)ATP IMEL Gulfstream II-III-IV-VColorado Springs, CO

When discussing AA sampling rates I think it's very important to also note what type of AA is being applied. 2x SSAA looks a whole heck of a lot better than 2x MSAA.

I use Nick's tweaks, have AA and TriLinear set in FSX, and unlimited frame rate; spot view in my own CYVR at a jetway (a resource hog) and the LevelD767 my fps was 15; applied the BP=0 tweak and my fps jumped to 20; I subsequently applied the highmemfix tweak and the flashing cloud tweak and FSX is running and looking very good (touch wood, I don't like tempting fate!). Don't know if this input is of any value to anyone.NigelVancouverMy SystemINTEL I7 920 quad core o/c 4.1MHzGigaByte EX58-UD3R mobo HIS ATI Radeon HD5850 1Gb 6Gb RAM Patriot Viper II 1600mhZ DDR31X WD Black 500GB HDD SATA 2X WD Black 500GB HDD SATA RAID1 LG DVD
