Alternate to default ATC ?

Featured Replies

Hi,I usually fly heavies above FL180(IFR) using the FSX default ATC. It's OK, but is there something else out there ATC-wise that's a step up ?Thanks,Jack

Hello Jack.I ALWAYS use Radar Contact. This a brilliant programme and takes ATC to a new level. It is easy to use and install. Give it a try!Chris Hall

I would like a try before I buy. I need a good IFR ATC program.

There are a few options.1 Updating the default ATC with editvoicepack. You will at least get more realistic phraseology. It won't change the way AI behaves, and it does not support SIDs. It can though theoretically handle Stars, but the airport AFCAD must have the approach defined within it. Not many do. Jim Vile's KATL is one that do. Also has good ground guidance.2. Radar Contact. More realistic phraseology, handles SIDS and STARS. Interacts with AI but does not control it, although it will halt it to give you clearance over them. In my opinion at least for me, I don't think it handles AI aircraft as well as the user aircraft. For instance, little to no intermediate altitude changes for AI. With Super ATC addon (I believe it's free), can add voice control.3. VOXATC I don't know too much about this one other then it has it's own AI traffic system, is voice controlled, It handles STARS and SIDS.4. ProFlight Emulator. (PFE) Which essentially rakes a flightplan, and creates a adventure out of it like the old Proflight2000 (Which is also needed and must be purchased in the form of the deluxe version if you don't already have it.) did for FS2004. Not sure how well it handles AI.Note PFE or default with/without editvoicepack sound more natural, because they actually use recorded voices to make up the phrases. Both Radar Contact and VOXATC on the other hand sound more robotic because they use Voice fonts. IMHOBTW I personally use default ATC modified with editvoicepack as the best compromise!

Thanks

That's incorrect. Radar Contact uses real recorded voices to form phrases, just like PFE does.I do have to admit though that they don't always sound as good as PFE..

Well if that is actual voices, it might as well have been voice fonts, because it is very robotic sounding! Here's a sampleEdit: I just listened to some PFE sample videos on youtube and it's not much better. So right now for voice quality I think default is still the best available. Obviously not for realistic operation, but the editvoicepack mods does make that better. so it depends on what you think is more important. For me the editvoicepack mods are a good compromise between realistic operation and voice quality.default with editvoicepack modshttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CMUDB3YiHFgRadar Contacthttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cisjpp4OlDo

I think you will find that the youtube vid of PFE in action is quite old. The voice files have udergone a number of revisions since and sound really quite good now. Can't speak for RC as I have not used it for a while but Meatwaters voice pack is supposed to be quite good.Bryan.

I have both PFE and RC. I stick with PFE though.

Your right the PFE videos are 1 year old so maybe they are better now, there are no later ones that I can find. As for Radar Contact, I found some later videos which the phases themselves seem more fluid, but there is still that annoying pause between literals. Like " Contact ground on 1--2--1--decimal--8--5".

Thanks

I have PFE and paid for the additional voice packs. I tried it when I first got it and could not get itto work. Even getting an update was a pain.I have not tried it since my last clean up. I have stock ATC with edit voice pack and it's actually grown on me. It does fail me from time to time, but I've learn to adjust. If PFE is finally working well for some, please share your experience. It's time to give it a shot and upload a current video.

The phrases are put together from from real voice clips. You will never get the phrases perfectly smooth and without some pauses like you suggest when the current technique is used, especially with numerals. They can be made better by careful manual matching and additional recordings but that is a tremendous task.Just imagine having to record all digits 000 - 359, instead of 0 -9. And that's just for headings, then you have frequencies, altitudes, callsign numbers etc. Combine that with thousands of callsigns and other phrases and you easily have a week worth of recording for each voice actor, and there could be 20+ voice actors. Then all those files need to be checked, cleaned up and matched. That's gonna cost ya!Here's a PFE video. Note how the FO / Captain voice is natural, as if heard in the cockpit but the incoming transmissions are a little garbled and noisy just like real VHF radio.PFE has more soundsets and they are regional, meaning you have british accented controllers speaking to you in the UK, Americans in the US, Spanish in Spain / Mexico etc.. global coverage. However, PFE does have other limitations which have caused me to set it aside. RC 4 is lacking in voice quality / quantity which is enough to turn me off. Here's hoping RC 5 will be a nice combination of the two.

Your right this PFE video does sound better then the other ones I've heard!

That Radar contact voice sounds horrible lolThat last PFE video sounds pretty dang good and I work traffic :)But if you are flying and you seriously do that long of a checklist after I clear you for takeoff - it will be "cancel takeoff clearance, call me back when you're actually ready for departure."
