August 17, 201015 yr Is it safe to delete default planes? I know not to touch the default Cessna 172 but what about the others? I never use them and are just taking up hard drive space.
August 17, 201015 yr Some addon planes will alias default panels and sounds. If you delete them, well....I suppose you could zip them up and set them aside in case you ever needed them, or they can always be extracted from the original discs. If you are that low on disc space that removing the default planes will make a difference you should probably consider a larger/ second hard drive.regards,Joe The best gift you can give your children is your time.
August 17, 201015 yr Author Im not low on disk space at all. I just figured that I never use the default planes so why keep them. I did not think of other planes using the default panel and sounds.
August 17, 201015 yr Just to be safe, you could keep the 737-400 because a lot of freeware does alias to that. Otherwise, most of the other ones shouldn't be an issue to remove. August 17, 201015 yr DON'T remove the default planes. #1 they require an insignificant amount of data space#2 you don't know what addon aircraft you may install that may require a sound and/or gauge.-- D. August 17, 201015 yr Mate, you can remove them all but the default cessna. I removed them all years ago and do it every time I need to reinstall. Look, even if something did go wrong which it wont, just copy them in another folder on your system and put them back if you need them.
August 17, 201015 yr I, also, moved them all but, the Boeings and the Cessna and no problems at all. Naif Almazroa My Youtube channel: https://www.youtube.com/user/Youmou0205
August 17, 201015 yr I think that most people understand why, but it hasn't actually been said:The reason it is a good idea to retain the Cessna 172 is because it features in the default startup. Even if you customise your startup to use your preferred aircraft, it is sometimes recommended to reload the default one when problems occur.Aside of that, there really is no problem removing other standard aircraft - it is purely a matter of taste. As has been said, if you have add-on aircraft that use default panels or sounds you might notice their absence but with a library full of free panels and sounds you will probably prefer to find something more appropriate anyway.Best wishes,John My co-pilot's name is Sid and he's a star! http://www.adventure-unlimited.org
August 17, 201015 yr All original FS9 stock aircraft are used by the AI system, so if you would delete (any of) them you will have many "dead" airports while your dynamic AI engine will constantly use up extra CPU capacity in trying to find and activate them. Extra stutters will be the result.Hans
August 17, 201015 yr All original FS9 stock aircraft are used by the AI systemI think it only touches those few of us who use the default aircraft as AI. If you remove or just deactivate the traffic030528.bgl file, they will NOT be reffered to.All the AI packages I know (e.g.WOAI) and addon flightplans use only extra AI aircraft added to the Aircraft folder. So I see no reason why the problem you describe above would happen. I may be wrong though...
August 18, 201015 yr Rafal,Thanks for your reaction but I'll explain my line of thought in some more detail.I agree with you in a technical sense about de-activating the traffic030528.bgl file etc. but only when you rely solely on separate AI Traffic files, i.e. those included in some addon airport sceneries, those in separately downloaded flight plans or those separately created by yourself.I personally prefer (selectively) keeping all these in the standard traffic030528.bgl file (via TTools) but purely for reasons of having them all together in one big "bucket", so I know where to look when problems occur. An exception is made for dedicated AI airport ground traffic, of which I leave the traffic file(s) concerned within the addon airport scenery files themselves. Quite some years ago I deleted a massive amount of stock flight plans from my "bucket", i.e. those which fly between stock airports where I never go myself anyway. I've also made separate real AI versions of all my stock AI aircraft which now no longer need panel, sound or other unesessary "ballast" files but have kept their aircraft.cfg title integrities as they were. I never fly stock aircraft myself anymore (I prefer the more modern addons), so I have in fact deleted all my original stock aircraft but have kept their AI versions so that the AI engine can go on doing it's "thing" without problems. I've also substituted many of them by regional AI aircraft and/or paints because in my opinion, seeing those same stock AIs all over the world, looks very unrealistic.Comments are welcome.Hans
August 18, 201015 yr Suggestion:Rather than removing or moving the birds in question (or any others for that matter), simply edit the aircraft.cfg file of each aircraft to "aircraft.sleep" or any other text you prefer. This will remove them from your aircraft selection options when you bring FS up. I do this with virtually all of the many aircraft I have but seldom fly. If I am not mistaken (and I may be), access to the sound and panel provisions that might be accessed by an alias from another aircraft will then be retained. This is what a manager program did that was available some time ago for FS9. If you ever want them again, simply edit the file back to "aircraft.cfg" and you are back in businessRespectflly:RTH
