Surgo: We all know how the sliders work.. so please explain how a game auto optimizes, and which game you saw this in. Be specific and it needs to allow addons by 3rd party developers. The only thing remotely close to this are titles that adapt based on hardware settings...

Kerosene: totally agree that's why I said it's up to the designer what is considered high and low level of details, but yeah normal settings at a default airport are never going to be equivalent to what FSDT thinks should be normal. The only thing we can count on is moving the sliders to the left tends to reduce complexity. However if it was constantly adjusting the level detail things would disappear on high load, and reappear on low load, all without the user not noticing?

Does anyone else remember the 3rd-party add on for FS8 that would dynamicaly adjust the the sim's settings based on framerate loads? I remember the application, but the name escapes me now all these years later... :(

This is a failure of imagination. It's trivial to add a ranking system for various elements that an adaptive system would weigh.
And that is nonsense. How would an adaptive system know what weights to apply to an individual user's preferences? Some users wwant lots of AI - others don't. Some want detailed secenery - other don't etc etc.

Yes, I remember using that. Like you say, I think it adjusted display settings on the fly. If I remember it worked well.

I already gave the link. Morrowind can do this, and is one of the most moddable games ever.

I don't think you were quite understanding me. The user themselves would rank them in a list.

rank the list is similar to having sliders .....

What's the difference between ranking them in a list or by using sliders?

I don't see how it's anything like having sliders as they are currently conceived. If I was to rank things in a list, I would be telling the engine to emphasize X at the expense of Y. With sliders, I'm telling the engine exactly how much of X and Y I want, no matter what the FPS becomes.

You give X Y and Z as priorities together with a frame rate. If the system can't cope it drops Z so you don't get any of it. You then have to change the frame rate until you get it. Where's the advantage of that over adjusting sliders?

That the game does it automatically in less than a second while you're playing the game, whereas with sliders you'd have to back out to your options, adjust some sliders, go back, check on the new framerate, possibly readjust, and then continue playing.Unless you aren't talking about sliders as they currently exist, which I'm talking about. If you aren't, then we're kind of talking past each other here.

Yes, it did work very, very well. Best of all, it was totally transparent to the user, and applied it's algorithim quite seamlessly. So, autodynamic adjustments can be implemented internally...

Surely you'd still have to back out to adjust frame rate?

The whole point is that you don't have to do that -- settings are adjusted while playing to keep framerate smooth.
