MD-11X Choice

Featured Replies

Hello. Those of you who know me, know that I am not new to PMDG, nor to flying, nor to Avsim. That having been said, I do not own the md11. Here is my dilemma. I was planning on getting the md11X since it came out. I ended up buying the j41 first though, because i really needed a regional turbo-prop, and viola, PMDG delivered. I have had it since the week that it came out, and love it! The problem is that I only fly vc. I love the j41 vc. Until the NGX is released, it will be the best vc available. Since the md11 was developed before PMDG implemented the technology that they used in the j41 vc, I am wondering how far of a step back is the vc in the md11 in terms of quality, and functionality compared to the j41? Sorry for the terrible phrasing, I have always been terrible at expressing what I am trying to say. I hope this makes sense. Also, since the md11 comes from PMDG, I know it will be top notch, but can anyone reassure me that it is a good buy. I would love to hear features and what not. I really want to purchase this, it just feels like my brain needs some reasurance that it's doing the right thing. Thanks to the PMDG team for creating fantastic products, and thanks PMDG community for always being so ready to assist and help a fellow simmer. Gracias por tu ayuda, y te quidas!

Hello Ethan, I bought the MD-11X last year I believe. When it comes to the all around simulation of systems, and all that other goodness, Its the best buy you can get. It has everything. Graphically speaking, the VC is really nice, It doesn't have all the new technology but it is a big step up from the 747 but a small step down from the J-41.Feature wise, if the real airplane has it, then I believe this one has it as well. After looking back on the purchase, I wish I have used it a lot more. My reason was once I bought it, I never had anytime to fly long flights. When I do though, I use the MD-11 and I don't regret it either. Its an awesome toy.

FAA: ATP-ME, 737 CA, enough time in the 757/767 to be dangerous 🤠

Thanks Matthew for your input. It is nice to know that it is a big step up from the 744. I feel reassured now, but I sure would appreciate other comments as well. BTW: Your sig is hilarious. I actually saw the post where someone else said that, and you said that that was going to become your new sig, and sure enough.

YES GET IT. It is outstanding in every respect. 2yrs down the track still learning the intricate and complete systems so much to offer. ((thats why im in no hurry for NGX (sh!t did i say that!)) only because there is so much to get out of this bird.

MD11 J41 747 NGX . . awaiting 777 !!!

It's a great plane. Get it. You will not be displeased at all...

I also only use VC and it has been done very very well. Some of the textures (the things you dont normally look at) are lower resolution than you find in the J41 but everything you need works fine and you wont need to get out 2D panels for any systems.(I even use the CDU's in the 3D cockpit without 2D pop up).You wont regret getting it, I love the J41 but I still like the MD-11 more.

I bought the MD-11 mid this year and did not regret it. I have owned the jetstream since late last year and am not dissapointed with the MD-11 VC. The systems are modeled to perfection. The only thing negative I have to say about it us that the external textures are at a low resolution, but this is no big deal, and can be fixed by downloading HD textures from Avsim. Ps. The FPS is exellent, big leap from the jetstream.

I bought the MD11 last year. It is mainly all I use. It is fantastic. The systems, full functional cockpit, a very nice VC, very nice exterior and some nice eye candy. I say by her. I always fly her, long medium short flights! I push her to the limit, or just casually fly her.

The thing I don't like about the MD11 is the way the side windows slope. When the aircraft is straight and level it gives the impression it is climbing. Very disorientating at first

Ethan,As far as system depth goes, if you fly in cold enough weather the fuel in the tanks will freeze and your engines will suffocate. Not sure how much more realistic PMDG could make this bird. LOL.gif

Take-offs are optional, landings are mandatory.
The only time you have too much fuel is when you're on fire.
To make a small fortune in aviation you must start with a large fortune.

There's nothing less important than the runway behind you and the altitude above you.
It's better to be on the ground wishing you were in the air, than in the air wishing you were on the ground.

Great! I am absolutely convinced! I can't wait...... Thank You!PMDG, have you ever seen a software company, FSX add-on or otherwise, where you have so unanimously satisfied your customers?!Thank you all!Totally unrelated: I live in the US, and the time rolled back an hour a couple weeks ago. Ever since this happened, the timestamp on all posts has been an hour off. The timestamps are very important to me, as I check the forums between 6-15 times a day. It is rather misleading and confusing. Does anyone know how to fix it?

Click under your forum name in upper right and go to "My Settings". Check to make sure your normal time zone is set correctly (eastern, central, mountain, pacific) and then make sure the "Observe DST" box is checked.

Ive recently made the move to FSX and the MD-11 is on my to-get list as soon as I can afford it. I flown the Fs9 version for along time and it really is awsome. It feels right. It feels like you would expect from a heavy jet and I only fly from the VC. Its hard to find any faults or things I dont like and I would rate it very high.

Ethan, First, I'll echo what others have said about how awesome the MD-11 is. For a variety of reasons, its actually my favorite of the PMDG to fly. I, like you, am now almost exclusively a VC flyer. But, even before the J41, I would use the VC for critical phases of flight, like T/O and Approach. But, it is a tad difficult to manage, at least from C&D from exclusively the VC. There are a lot (a whole lot) of pop up panels, most of which are useful mainly on the ground, but a few of which (like EICAS) are useful in the air. Sometimes, I use the 2D for start up and then switch over for movement. And at cruise, when screwing around with different instrument monitoring, sometimes I use the 2D there too, but not as much as I used to. Don't get me wrong, its completely flyable with the 3D only, but sometimes the kind of looking back and forth you need for stuff like starting the engine is a bit cumbersonme in 3D. Here's the specific thing I am thinking of: to start the engine, you must first push the start button and the engine button on the Overhead. Then, you pull the button by the throttles. Monitor the spool up and then when at like 15 or 16, open the fuel. Repeat two more times. Sure, you can do that in 3D, but the pop up throttle and section of the overhead is just less futzing around. So, with that nuance aside, I find the VC completely flyable. By the way, the bird is a handful. Enjoy.
