If you really want this, talk to a Navy recruiter. They'll likely just humor you the first 1 or 2 visits, but once they see you're not just some kid with a fresh interest that only lasts till summer break they'll take you seriously & help you out. Best advice I can offer is keep yourself out of trouble. Military pilots generally have a higher than normal security clearance, so you don't want that one stupid weekend arrest to keep a wrench in your hand instead of a throttle...

I second this. "STAY OUT OF TROUBLE!",permenantly, you can forget a career as a pilot now adays even with a minor misdimeanor conviction(e.g. Underage alchohol, DUI, etc.). It is very easy to do to get caught into this during the college phase, friends attend a party with the wrong crowd police show up, someone needs a ride home, etc.Additionally, the best route would probably to be in an ROTC program for the Navy or AirForce. You will be a committed US military officer and the pilot slots are more realistic than someone off the street going into OCS. Though keep in mind that this goal overall is extremely loafty at the current economic stage of the country. It's not too much different than wanting to be an astronaut. As you probably no there will be no future shuttle programs in the forseeable future.Be prepared to dedicate and sacrafice everything and have a very high possibitly of failure. There are many very experienced and proven airline pilots currently unemployed for the long term. This not only goes to pilots but also aerospace engineers. I was buying some paint a Sears the other day and the salesman formally was an aerospace engineer for Boeing for 20+ years and laid off, now he is selling paint, go figure...I'm speaking from experience.Best Wishes and good luck,BillyBob

My assistant used to be a mechanical engineer. Now a guy with an associate's degree in auto mechanics (me) tells him to clean welds with a wire wheel.EDIT: The trouble thing is very serious advice. They will talk to your parents. They will talk to neighbors. They will talk to your high-school teachers & possibly even elementary depending how high a clearance you need. They'll talk to employers, banks who loaned you money, everybody. It's very important to be that "model citizen" you see in the magazines.

A few other points that haven't been mentioned.1. If your physically fit stay that way, if your not, start getting in shape now.2. Be well rounded. Get involved with doing things in the community, for charity, and things of that nature.3. Try to letter in some type of sport while your in high school, like basketball, football, baseball, track, etc.4. If you have good vision take care of it, because without it your chances of becoming a pilot in the military will be slim to none. Same goes for your hearing, dont blast your car stereo to much :( 5. Join the Civil Air Patrol to gain some experience. You dont need to be a pilot to be a member.6. Become a class president or something thing like that. Be active in school clubs and activities.I know a lot of these things seem off the beaten path since normally the first thing mentioned are grades, but if you take a look at the folks that make into the Air Force Academy, Navel Academy, etc., these are all traits and activities that they have been involved with. While its true that you need to be smart and have good grades, the military doesn't select pilot based on those things alone. You will be hard pressed to find a military pilot who was geek in high schools or college and wasn't involved in many of the things I mentinoed. The military likes well rounded smart individuals.Sean Campbell

Yes, good point. One of my roomates friends was a new employee at Boeing and the related project was associated with a Classified Military project funded with government money. The groverment sent an investigator to do a unbelievably in depth and throgough life history review to obtain governemnt security clearance. My roomate was questioned for an hour including topics on credit, friends, family, activities, and even promescuity! My roomate was protective and yet truthful on responses. The government employee said this type of interview was conducted from the applicants birth to present day, to achieve security clearance. Needless to say following the extensive security clearance review process my roomates friend was no longer and employee at Boeing. This was for a $12/hour administrative job.I work in biological research now. While not as in depth as Military security clearance, I have clearance to work with viruses that could be potentially be used as terror weapons thus have been categorized by the government as agents. Every drop is closely monitored and the facility has intensive security. I was required to submitt fingerprints and they were run though every database known to man and also those unknown I'm sure. This took about 4 months to get clearance and clearance is typically continually monitored. Anyway, the moral of the story is to stay out of trouble permentantly it will be invaluable regardless what path in life you end up taking.BB

That is all very true. Please keep in mind that we're not trying to dissuade you. These are things you need to be prepared for if you pursue a career as a military pilot.

I'm just going to throw in one more thing that may not be too popular. You are 15, you want to be a Navy pilot, and that's very exciting. You are setting yourself up to be well prepared. The character issue is very important, so are the grades. Just ask yourself if you are equally prepared to do your duty as a military pilot. Are you spiritually, morally and mentally prepared to step into a cockpit of an aircraft and fire your weapons at other human beings? Are you equally prepared to be fired upon? Are you willing to follow orders to do so without question even if it means taking another life? We live in a crazy world where our armed forces are currently engaged in 3 wars, and the military is targeting kids your age with tv commercials that make war look like a video game. It isn't. I'm extremely appreciative of all the men and women that serve. The military can be a great career, and the best fast track into some amazing flying and a career in aviation. Just make sure you have your eyes wide open going in.

One of the owners of the car dealer I work for is a former air force fighter pilot he flew f-16's back in the 80's- early 90's and went to the air force academy. He had perfect grades, was and still is in perfect shape, well dressed well rounded. To have a chance of getting into a service academy you need to be the best of the best, so you need to be at the top of your class, not middle of the pack not top 10 percent, you need to be at the top. be in perfect shape and carry your self well and you will have a chance at a pilot slot even if you have to go ROTC. Ohh one last thing I am pretty sure you need a senator or congressman to endorse you to get into a service academy.

Why on God's good green earth do you want to be a fighter pilot? Helicopters are much much more fun and you really have to know how to fly! :(
