Win 7 on HDD or SSD?

Featured Replies

What to do?Use a SSD Vertex 120 Gb for OS, and a WDC 1 Tb 64 6 Gbs for FSX?Or the other way around?NickN talks about IDE being the best for FSX, but when Win7 is on the SSD, it´s ACHI, and the same for the WDC...Opinions, or better yet, experience about this, appreciated, thanks!

Nick N says FSX on the SSD - that's how I do it.You'll get different opinions of course. Placing the OS on the SSD would be uber fast boot times for Windows.

I was actually thinking of getting two 300 GB vraptors. My thinking is that initial load times are not a big issue for me but I want smooth performance and fast loading of textures. Will it even make a difference for the OS performance if you take load time out of the equation ?Mark.

You will see no performance difference other than load times with an OS on a SSD vs. an OS on a HD.

But will I see a difference in performance having FS on a vraptor vs good 7200 drive ?Mark.

I went overboard and got this for FSX just to keep the sata bottleneck out of the equation..... http://www.newegg.co...N82E16820227521 never looked back.
$1,029.00 ohmy.gif Thanks, but no thanks, it´s FSX, not the Spaceshuttle!Well, do I want fast boot of OS, or fast loading of FSX?With 64 Mb cache and Sata 6 Gbs, the HDD should be OK for FSX, I hope...

I would certainly put FSX on the SSD. I can live with longer boot times for the OS, but it REALLY makes a difference for FSX.Added benefit: Smoother flight because of faster texture loading. Difference is most noticeable when approaching on larger addon airports. You won't getter FPS, but believe me, stable 15fps are much better than jumpy 15fps.

FSX on the largest and fastest SSD.However, if you're using other programs like I do, you will certainly appreciate the added performance with an SSD for the OS.Alain's card is a beast, but you will be very happy with a Revodrive.

My worries are over: "VERTEX works best in IDE mode but AHCI is supported" http://www.ocztechno...ows_on_a_VERTEXNow installing Win 7 64 bit on the Vertex in Ide Mode, and later FSX on the WDC 1 Tb, 64 Mb Cache, let´s see how this goes...Thinking.gifUpdate: FSX is now installed, with REX, and this SSD/HDD combo is just absolutely blazing fast!Yes, I know it´s only default FSX right now, but 7 seconds for loading the Trike at Friday Harbour, and it´s not even defragged yet...I "shortstroked" the HDD - 1 partition @ 370 Gb for FSX.This is the best harddisk I ever bought, just incredible:http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136533

Honestly this question is a moot point with Intel's newest chipset, Z68 and Rapid Storage Technology. Get a small SSD and pair it with a large mechanical drive and let the software manage it for you - best of both worlds.

I say just spend a couple days trying both options. You're the best judge of your system performance. For me, there was absolutely no difference between FSX on a HDD and FSX on a SSD (in terms of fps or smoothness). Granted, I had both FSX and the OS installed on the same SSD. Perhaps running FSX on a SSD dedicated solely to FSX would yield some benefit... but I'm not convinced. Some day when SSDs are 1$/GB or less, I will buy a massive SSD for FSX.

@TechguyMaxC:Agree, but I´m brainwashed by your "Old Pal" or "Old Grumpy" aka NickN, who apparently is stuck somewhere between 2009 and 10, and don´t intend to move forward! If you look over at "his" forum, then my combo is no good:"You also do not want to mix SSD and mechanical on the motherboard SATA ports (other than dead backup storage) in other words either 2 SSDs, one for OS and one for FSX with addons, or, 2 mechanical drives." http://www.simforums...topic38947.html

Thanks, that is the information I have been looking for.
