I hope that the long wait to release or even complete Radar Contact v5 is caused by JD working with MS on Flight.
It's not.

Thanks Jim for the in-depth response! I knew you know! lol :)

Jim seems to be implying that Edit Voice Package improves the quality of 'voice', where as far as I am aware it does not.
Speeding up the playback x2 really does help. At the very least, it sounds more natural... :(

The MS bloggers during FSX development said they considered AI and ATC to be "legacy" features that would not be further improved, and that multiplayer would take their places. They had no plans to update either (much) for FSX or FSNext. Whether this is true or not for Flight I do not know, but their continued emphasis on the online experience certainly doesn't bode well...

Oh, I really did not know that. Apologies. I had visions it might sound like Stephen Hawking on mushrooms.

No, that would be the X Plane ATC!

I find it funny (sarcastic) that in the 'missions' ATC sounds more like real-life phraseology. American 1388 would be read as American Thirteen Eighty Eight in the U.S. Before you start with the flames, I know that the standard is to sound out the ATC callsign by number.

Surely you guys aren't complaining about the FSX ATC calling out "American One Three Eight Eight" instead of "American Thirteen Eighty-Eight"? :(

I surely am. There has been room for this since fs9, all you have to do is record a couple more .wav files, and right conditional code for ATC. The entire airspace system operates on rules. Those rules set a reliable way to model ATC in a game (if x, then y). This is not an unreasonable request seeing as when I fly in real life, there's only a couple of differences from there to fs i.e. no STAR/SID/V-/J- routing that is spoken in fs. So to reiterate, yes, I am "complaining" about this issue.

Well, the one thing that EVP can't do is fix the (mis)pronunciation of certain names and keywords, such as the three different ways the voice actors pronounced "NASA" (correctly for most, but one naw-sah, and another nay-saw...)Nevermind the weird pronunciation of Icelandic, or Norwegian city and airport names! :(

Actually maybe it can. If you don't like the way a word sounds, you can replace it by peicing together syllables from other works to make a new version up. It's a little work, but possible. I've made a number of modifications using EditVoicepack (Some of which are available here in the FSX/Sound library and others I plan on releasing) and it really does make a difference to what the default sounds like. Here's a samplehttp://forum.avsim.net/topic/336145-fsx-ifly-737-800-flight-from-kansas-city-to-memphis/

I'm all for speech synthesis, so long as the radio work is more realistic. Would love to hear the random noise and bleeps and people getting stepped on you hear all the time. Realistic interference would be great but I realize that's a whole 'nuther level of things to consider, and honestly I'd trade that for cloud shadows in a second.Would like once in a while to hear someone accidentally keying their mic and talking about sandwiches, or clouds or whatever ;)Speech synthesis makes it all possible. Recorded voice may sound more realistic but I think the tradeoff is worth it.Overall, though, I want to be able to fly to an uncontrolled airport and hear the local traffic acting realistically.

You want better quality ATC?VATSIM, IVAO, PilotEdge, Boston Virtual ATC, etc. etc...Even if Microsoft upgraded the quality of the AI ATC voice, there's still serious performance shortfalls when it comes to the AI. Try installing just a few airline libraries from World of AI and you get traffic that's sequenced less than a mile apart (sometimes literally flying nose to tail) on approach.IMHO, I believe Microsoft is focusing on other priorities and relying on the online community to provide enjoyable and much more realistic ATC experiences.
