You guys know I am one of the most loyal FS9 advocates out there and have been for years... I recently spent about $1100 on a new box (for FS9 primarily) which is an I5 2500K @4.8 with a GTX570... I also got a 32 inch Sony Bravia as my monitor and WOW, FS9 never looked better :) Now, I am also on the Beta team for the PMDG NGX and I have to say I installed Win 7, installed FSX, ran the tool ******* created did not tweak a single thing and fired up FSX. I was AMAZED that I was sitting there locked at 40FPS... Loaded up KBFI and took off and sure enough, yes FSX looks better... FS9 still "FEELS" better to me but FSX with UTUSA and UTEurope LOOKS stunning... I love the traffic, hell we all love AESLite at FS9 airports so why not traffic everywhere, the textures are incomparable, FSX at high resolution settings just blows away even the best that GE could ever throw out at FS9 and the PMDG NGX is an absolute masterpiece... I am not just saying that, some of the things they have implemented are complete game changers...So the point of my babble is testing for PMDG forced me to re-install FSX on the new box and it both shocked and impressed me and yes I am locked at 40FPS on high settings. So perhaps as FS9 hit its stride many years after its initial release when HW caught up FSX is now doing the same... You can build a $1k computer and run it without issues and it looks beautiful. With that being said, outside of flying the NGX in FSX right now I still prefer my 777 with ActiveCamera in FS9 :) Until there is a PMDG 777 and a good add-on for KEWR FS9 will remain my primary sim although I miss a lot from FSX when I switch back... Just saying you can't take anything away from FSX anymore and the things PMDG are doing in the NGX could NEVER EVER EVER be pulled off in FS9 period.Flame away!

Have a Wonderful Day

Very nice. I bought the IPad 1 . IPad 2 was then released... Did I want it yes...could I afford it? Yes...... Did I buy it? no.... Not a significant upgrade.IMHOiPad 3 may well be. :( My favourite aircraft are L10, DC10, TU-154 and B742. Which sim do you suggest I use? :rolleyes:I would also like to add that FS9 can do things that have never ever ever been done in FSX and never will be.

Like what? I am an FS9 user by the way.

Like what?I suppose you could say the same, in that FSX can do things that FS9 can't or never will be able to do, which is evident in products like PMDG's NGX or FSDT's KLAX. Seems like devs who work outside the SDK keep saying that there is a lot more they can do that's just not possible in FS9.I use both sims, but after my recent upgrade to a new rig that runs FSX like a dream, FS9 for me is starting to lose its appeal when I fire it up after an FSX flight and am faced with the old and now blurry looking GE Pro textures and the nasty looking water. To each their own. If there are certain a/c you like to fly that aren't available for FSX and/or you've spent years making custom 2D panels and other things for your favorite a/c, then I cant blame anyone for not wanting to switch. If there was a way to get FS9 to use higher res textures and better looking water animations/textures, I probably wouldn't have switched, but then again I would have to miss out on new things like the NGX and airports that devs might start not porting to work in FS9.Cheers

For me it’s very simple. I buy every other simulator. Bought Fs2000, missed Fs2002, Bought Fs2004, missed FSX and I will buy Flight. I think the dice was rolled in my favour by landing up on Fs2004. I agree with some of the points above, FS2004 is beginning to looked dated, especially when you see some of the screen shots that are coming out of the Flight Forum. Having said that, look at some of Ed's (and others) work on the Screen Shot forum. It proves what a fantastic and enduring sim FS9 still is. In my opinion FSX is the better sim; However, whether FSX it is a better put-together sim, or a sim that will be talked about with any affection in 10 years time, which FS9 undoubtedly will be, is another matter entirely.Tristan

With the average age of most readers of Avsim as 55 years, (shown in a poll) and the economic climate being what it is, is one reason why most simmers just cannot afford to finance FSX to bring it up to the level that they have in FS9.The reality is also that most simmers get lousy fps with FSX if they are running intensive scenery with complex aircraft and while we (me included, even though I do use FSX too) want developers to continue with both, I think they won't.Don't forget that Aerosoft's new flightsim has still to show it's face. Let's hope it shows all the previous ones up and hopefully it will be a sim that everyone can use.

Do you really think that will happen ??????

There's no doubt that FS9 has held up well considering its age, and Ed also. I've seen Ed's videos and screen shots and while they look nice I always keep in mind that his panels are made by him for his use only, lots of the screen shots are edited, and the videos have post production editing with his voice added in as well as the camera movement. I dont mean any disrespect to him, but aside from the panels and stuff he makes, the rest is the same as anyone else has regarding ground or water textures that can be bought or are freeware and/or are mixed and matched from various sets. When you watch his videos you still see the same old tired looking ground/water textures. The only time its hard to tell the difference between sims is when the screen shots are taken from the ground level, get to altitude and its a whole new ball game. The only other thing I would say is that with the beautiful VC's available in some of the newer addons for FSX a/c like the NGX for example, and using a head tracking device or hatswitch to pan with EZdok, besides Ed and Alex Ried, who would want to fly using 2D panels? I used to only use 2D panels for better FPS, plus a lot of FS9 heavies couldn't be flown completely from a VC. Now that I have the horses to fly heavies from the VC, I think it looks a lot better and if you have your views set up right, its just as easy to navigate the cockpit.Like I said no disrespect to Ed and his videos and custom panels, but when I see some of the stuff comming from PMDG or A2A of late, mixed with ORBX or GEX, and some FlyTampa, ORBX, FSDT, and occassional Aerosoft/Sim-Wings airports sprinkled in, I dont think anything thing made for FS9 or anyone using can compete with it. I was always a little disappointed Ed never embrassed FSX because it would have been cool to see what he could have come up with using it and a high res format.

You made a mistake Tristan IMHO FS98 was great.... FS2000 not.....FS2002 was a great sim ...but FS2004 was a worthy upgrade (I did not want to upgrade but did pretty shortly after release)

Well, if FSX was flyable when it first came out we wouldn't have gotten stuck with FS9 and invested a lot of time and money in it. Now, if I do the same with FSX, and MSFlight comes out, what will I do with all the addons that won't work with the new sim?

My point was that I was very happy that I ended up with FS2004 and I agree FS2000 was a big disappointment. :(

I always wanted to be in control of my sim and make it my own. Being a huge fan of everything photoreal I knew the only way I was going to get this is if I learnt to do it myself.... I started with my paints and then my panels. I know high quality VC's with 3D gauges are the future ...well here right now actually. But FS will always be a compromise and I would rather have the versatility of a 2D panel, no Track IR and no cartoon sim. .....until I learn to model VC's LOL.gif

Yes my screen shots and videos are edited.... as they would be if they were FSX (there was no improvement in FS ATC and the same camera movement would be needed for FSX) . Screenshots are light entertainment for me .... I like to hear aircraft.
When you watch his videos you still see the same old tired looking ground/water textures. The only time its hard to tell the difference between sims is when the screen shots are taken from the ground level, get to altitude and its a whole new ball game.
I mainly fly heavies..when I am flying I am not looking at the ground. I am looking at my gorgeous photoreal cockpit continuously checking and crosschecking the flight is going to plan. I need great ground textures at my airports....which I have. The quality of FS9 scenery these days is just fantastic! :(

I have Track IR5 which I use in the GA VC's ....but I always said to myself if I want to fly GA I would rather fly the real thing (which I do). I will never get the chance to fly my beloved heavies. If I was mainly a GA pilot I would want to look out of the window in my sim and it be the same as IRL (a la tileproxy) then it would be of use to me. FSX is not that.... that sim has yet to arrive.... and when it does I will buy it!Meantime I hope FlyTampa continue to produce airports for FS9. :(
