ETOPS or no ETOPS

Gang,I am sure that a lot of you, like me, really enjoying flying the long over water ETOPS flight, so I wanted to share a little info on that. The NGX can be configured - realtime without leaving your flight situation, as an ETOPS or non ETOPS aircraft. You can select the additional battery and additional fire protection required for these over water operations and configure your aircraft as ETOPS ready for these longhauls - the flight from LA to Honolulu being a good example.Once your aircraft has been configured by yourself with the necessary equipment it is ETOPS certified for your journey, as you can see from the placard hereEtopsenabled.jpgAlternatively, if you have your aircraft configured in a manner that is not ETOPS compliant. (I quickly changed the level of fire protection here for this shot) you will notice your certification notice will disappear from the cockpitEtopsdisabled.jpgThe moral of the story, is that all you ETOPS fans like me who love crossing the ocean can configure your aircraft to be properly certified. It also goes without saying that all that extra kit you are adding for your ETOPS certification actually works too! All this without leaving the cockpit or restarting your flight! Personally, as a transatlantic fan, my NGX is permanently configured for 180 minute ETOPS.all the bestJR

This might be a little off topic now, but i thought i'd just throw it in here instead of creating a new topic about it. I am curios about the glarewings, where the "CLOCK+MIC" text is, with the CLOCK pushbutton (i guess?), is it possible to remove it and have it this way?..glare50.jpgSorry about the pic, couldn't find a better one.

Thanks for the pictures JR - very nice. I noticed that FD is annunciated on the PFD, but the FD bars and modes are not displayed. I'm curious to know under what conditions we would see only the FD annunciation w/o the bars and modes. Thanks! Rushad Ed.

While on the groung, I believe. Before you start the pushing-back, you should arm the Flight Directors. That's why there are no annunciations. But thought that the bars should be displayed.

Hi JR,Great post. One question though. ETOPS generally requires the flight to be within 180 mins of land along entire route. Transatalantic flight track nothern part of Atlantic to meet this requirement. How can a flight from KLAX to HHNL meet the 180 min ETOP requirment over the open Pacific? Thanks again for you post and pics.Best,BillyBob

the bars will not appear on the ground with the NG until you hit TO/GA on takeoff. Its accurate to the latest NG avionics and is slightly different to what you see on the other Boeings.all the bestJR

Interestingly, the flying time from KLAX to PHNL Honolulu fits just within the ETOPs 180 limits. You either continue to Honolulu or return to LA depending on whether you have passed the halfway point.

KLAX-PHNL is only a five hour flight, and less than that eastbound. At any one point in the route, you're within 180 minutes of LAX or HNL(or both).-johnny rodgers

I understand now. You'd be withing 3hr of either HNL or LAX. I was just thinking of tracking a coastline...Thanks,BB

Wasn't there a 138 minute ETOPS to cover Hawaii flights to the mainland ?John Ellison

Great feature, I hope some of the repaints will have ETOPS written on the nose gear door (or wherever it is). I have noticed this on Alaska Airlines and Westjet flights to Hawaii.
