August 10, 201114 yr This is becoming an annual ritual - getting rid of a set of accumulated tweaks and restoring FSXto a cleaned up state.. After getting rid of all of the tweaks, I find that FSX looks better and flies better. No more Pool entries and no more Small Part Reject entries (no disrespect to Bojote).. Now the marinas in my area show better and the flight is very smooth all the way.See below a shot of Maple Bay where I live.. The only additional entries in my FSX.cfg file are AffinityMask=14 LOD_RADIUS=5.500000 and TextureMaxLoad=12 (this one is actually from Bojote - and certainly helps with texture loading - Thanks!) August 10, 201114 yr Bert Pieke, I salute You! Really, not joking, I´ll try the same and see what happens... I see you have the Q6600... I have fond memories of my Q6600 @ 3.8 Ghz cooled down with a twin-fan NorthQ Siberian Tiger Water Cooler, holy cow what noice!
August 10, 201114 yr I do not even consider these tweaks, but other than the standard stuff like disable preload=1 and wideview=true the only real tweak I use is highmemfix=1. This is only because of my PMDG MD11, CS MD80 and VRS FA18E.
August 10, 201114 yr I did a lot of tests/benchmarking with different of those exotic tweaks. Could not verify any positive effect on my system when it came to smoothness and image quality. I stopped tweaking a long time ago. These are the tweaks that I use: Frames limited to 30 fps (set in FSX since the external limiter didn't improve anything), which eliminates stuters and autogen spikes.TEXTURE_BANDWIDTH_MULT=100DisablePreload=1TEXTURE_MAX_LOAD=4096 (to allow better image quality)TERRAIN_MAX_AUTOGEN_BUILDINGS_PER_CELL=900 (to reduce the amount of autogen buildings, but keep the normal amount of trees).Poolsize=90000000, which reduces stutters on my system. I also use HIGHMEMFIX=1, which isn't a tweak.
August 10, 201114 yr From my understanding, Small_Part_Reject_Radius does nothing after SP1 / SP2 anyway Glenn Ryzen 3700X, X570 Pro Wifi, 32GB 3600mhz RAM, Nvidia Titan Xp "Galactic Empire", RM750x PSU, H700 case, 2x NVMe M2 SSD, 1x SATA SSD
August 10, 201114 yr Agree completely, I use only highmemfix=1. I could never get any of the exotic tweaks to work in my system - meaning they'd either create bizarre artifacts or crash FSX on startup. I gave up on them a long time ago. Less is more. August 11, 201114 yr Author Since my original post, NickN has pointed out to me that the entry TextureMaxLoad=12 is not necessary and that the same effect canbe achieved by TEXTURE_BANDWIDTH_MULT=80 // (40 is the default value) if you have your FPS locked in FSX, which I have, at 30. I've tested this and found that it works, and avoids an additional cfg entry. Back to flying my RealAir Citabria over The Gulf Islands in Orbx's PNW From my understanding, Small_Part_Reject_Radius does nothing after SP1 / SP2 anyway I've also been told it does nothing for performance, but in my case it takes away from the visuals..two good reasons to not use it.. Yeah it doens't work like it did prior to SP1/SP2 but it still works on some things on my system like AI and some objects at FSDT airport. Almost like another way of control the LOD loading in some respects. Avsim Board of Directors | Avsim Forums Moderator
August 11, 201114 yr Moderator Long ago NickN came to the same conclusion and has always said that less is better. Highmemfix is about it for me. I run TBM at 120 and all is well. The people that I feel sorry for are those who feel that if a tweak is mentioned they have to add it blindly. Then they cannot figure out why their system crashes. I think that a lot of the 'tweaks' were meant to overcome hardware deficiencies that become unnecessary as folk add new hardware. August 11, 201114 yr Acceleration did good by eliminating the need for most of the little tweaks that we really needed for the original retail and SP1 versions of FSX.
August 11, 201114 yr Commercial Member Bert, I do the same thing here. I often do a Spring and Fall cleaning with FSX to clean up clutter, bad uninstalls, etc. I also elminate addons that I don't use or no longer have support issues that need me to jump into them to research. I usually defrag once a month in between the fresh starts. This along with Nick's tweaks keep the FSX humming along pretty good.
