What's the latest thinking regarding full screen v windowed mode?

Featured Replies

As Ryan said, it's better to run in full screen. And although I'm not an expert on the subject, I can't stand a non vertically synched flight sim! My only problem is when I'm in windowed mode I can't use other applications. Flight sim is such a delicate program that it almost needs its own computer (which is sadly what I gave it).

You can undock it and move it over to the second screen from windowed mode...
Thanks. Complete forgot that option!Eric

I tried this for last nights flight and saw no difference in my frame rate. Maybe it is a quark with my system or maybe I set it wrong. I changed: ForceFullScreenVSync=1toForceFullScreenVSync=0

So I already had it turned on? Well, it doesn't matter, I still didn't see a difference but changed it back to "=1" anyway since that is where it was at before I tinkered with it.

Well, I'm running most of the time full screen while having all the nice tools around FSX on the second one. This is no problem as there is a quite nice tool "FS-SIMtimizer" allowing to do so. I think Ryan mentioned it here already a couple of days before. Sorry, I don't have a link but you will find it, I'm sure. Rolling%20Eyes.gif Regards,Axel

If you run windowed mode you just have to make sure that nothing is overlaying the FS window. In Vista this can happen from the "globe" of the start button sitting on top of FSX, you have to pull the window up slightly to get it off of it. Shouldn't be a problem in XP or Win7, you can just maximize the window and it'll be fine. Also, do not run v-sync on in windowed mode, it isn't triple buffered like the full screen version is and you'll end up with the only possible framerates being the refresh rate divided by 2, 3, 4, etc. This can easily be the source of lower frames in windowed - if the system can't maintain 60FPS, the next one down is 30, then 15, then 7.5 etc.
so I will check that the [graphics] section of my fsx.cfg readsForceWindowedVSync=0 right?

Ryan, are you saying for those that run in windowed mode should have the force vsync on in windowed mode in their fsx.cfg set to zero? I have noticed this issue with the frames that you speak of being divided. So if we set it to zero, we will regain those lost frames?
A bump so Ryan will hopefully see this.

Thunderbird: for dual screens do the following. Right-click on a clear part of your screen, click on nVidia control panel, then select "Set up multiple displays". You will then see two large menu boxes, the first requires you to check your two screens. The 1 & 2 screens are listed, just check them. Below you will see a big box in which two screens are shown as large rectangles with the numbers on them. You can move them to suit, but I have seen no need, and I make number 1 the main display. An asterisk appears on that one. All done, good. Now out of that, Start FSX as administrator, choose your flight, Fly Now, then go to full screen. The aircraft in whatever location you chose, comes up on the No 1, screen, your primary display. And yes the right screen is black. JOY, that's what you want. Now bring up your popups, ie for PMDG I only bring up the FMC - it is still easier to use on that screen - with your mouse grab it at the top and move it in the direction of the black screen and it slides all the way over like magic. Now bring up ATC grab it by the top bar and drag it over to the black screen. Resize and position as you want. SSSh for the iFly 6 and 700s I bring the throttle quadrant over, it makes starts that much easier. This means I fly with absolutely no pop-ups of any sort on the main screen, all I have is the aircraft - and on a 32" HD TV the flying is a joy. And for low level VFR it's great, as the GPS can sit on the other screen. I have more than PMDG tubes in my stable and this arrangement really adds to great flying with any aircraft you choose. For those with TH2G your three screens are still the No1, and you can put your popups on to the fourth screen. I did that for years and it is great.
Dear Ian Sorry it's been a while since I replied to that helpful suggestion. I will try that ASAP and let you know how I get on. Thanks matey.

Flying Axx: I was fascinated by the breakthrough by Ruespe and others in Germany that allows Plan G to run on the second monitor while in fullscreen mode. Have I got it correct? I have downloaded the Simtimiser, I need now to install it into FSX modules?. Once installed, do I do the following? I start Plan G, then FSX in windowed mode. I then put FSX into Full Screen and move Plan G over to the other monitor? This I don't think I quite understand. How do I make sure Plan G stays on top (like a 2D popup) so I can then move it over. It obviously works, but I am a little confused on setup. I would be grateful for your help, as this is the first time I have heard of a moving map (other than GPS) running in full screen - a real breakthrougth. Maybe also something like EFB from Avlasoft might also. A big change indeed.

Ian, Sorry for answering late but I did not follow this thread. However, Simtimiser is just a stand-alone program that can even be started after FSX. As fas as I remember, you should drive your sim in the windowed mode (at least I do it this way). You will receive a message that FSX has been detected and then you may change to full-screen. As I try to avoid to load too many programs while starting up I did not configure it in a way of permanent presence which would be possible. Thus it shuts down completely after finishing FSX. BTW, I don't use the other features at all. Hope this helps. Just a final remark: if you want me (or any other) to react, you may quote the related posting in order to get the person "warned". There is too much traffic in this board and a thread could disappear quite quickly.

Window mode aaaaalllll the waaaaayyyy wink.pngI feel more comfortable with FSX running in window mode so I can access my other software nice and quick. I also experience more FPS then in fullscreen. One recommendation to you guys;Check out "FS-SIMtimizer" by Ruediger -> http://www.friendlyflusi.at/index.php?page=Thread&postID=127639#post127639 Best,

Status: Waiting for a PMDG 737 NGX FSX gamespy Multiplayer hotfix pilot_smiley.gif

Does anyone know if this would solve the lag spikes and random disconnects in SB4 if I used this program for that?Does anyone have a English version link, if there actually is one? My translation of it is weak and I know I am not reading all I need to about what it actually really does. Thanks

William Sequeira

System dependent, I think...
After reading this, I ran a quick test using FRAPS. I started FSX, 738WL, cold and dark, and switched between windowed and full screen. I run 3 monitors (resolution: 3840 X 1024). Panning around the cockpit, I get:Windowed = 9 - 12 fpsFull Screen = 18 - 20 fps
