September 1, 201114 yr On the contrary. We've got private pilots who don't know the art of simple pilotage. Without a Garmin, they're lost and busting the SFRA zone around DC! The first time I went up in a 162 Skycatcher, I was furiously looking out the window for an unfamiliar airport 20 miles off my nose. After about 10 minutes of eyestrain, I remembered there was a damn computerized map showing me exactly where I was and where I was going. New pilots must be so spoiled these days. You are Sweet music to my ears! - More of these "Young Uns" need to learn from you - GPS = Infringements! You dont even have to be taught how to use one if its fitted to your aircraft! Primary Naviagtions skills is how it should be flown with the GPS as a backup (looking out the window doesnt need batteries!) Regards James Carr

September 4, 201114 yr HelloI can not reproduce the manipulation of the video. In this one, the pilot creates a custom waypoint A (RW/-3, along track wpt) and after a custom waypoint B in reference to the previous point A (Axxx/y, PBD wpt)I make a mistake, or is not implemented (custom wpt in reference to a custom wpt) in the PMDG ?Thanks for yours suggestions.Alain

September 7, 201114 yr Uh thanks, I was afraid it was gone as I seem to have missed the thread in the first place.
September 7, 201114 yr Very cool! The REF NAV Data page and the ability to create your own waypoint name (HELLO), then enter in custom coordinates for that created waypoint is the only missing function in the NGX needed for true ETOPS operations (creating EEP, CP1, EXP per the flight plan).. September 23, 201114 yr Hm, I just tried to throw in a (short) visual approach in the DEP/ARR page by just selecting the runway and entering a 2 mile runway extension, then I wanted to manually add more points referenced to the RX extension point (RX26 in my case). Neither referencing to RW26 nor RX26 works. I either get INVALID ENTRY for a perfectly correct format or for the extension point RX26 more often a NOT IN DATABASE. Sure hope this will work in the SP... BTW, different question, but similar topic. Say I want to fly an instrument procedure into runway 3, but thence the visual circle into 21. So I set up the approach, and the last point in the plan (excluding the MAP here) will be RW03.I'm pretty sure the intrument part would have a higher priority when thinking about what should be programmed into the route, but is there ANY way to get an RW21 point into the flight plan and build a visual pattern around it, WITHOUT having to drop the intrument procedure? Also, is it possible to reference a runway on the FIX page? I can only get a circle around an airport, which is most likely referenced by the ARP only, but sometimes I'd rather have a specific runway there. Any way to do that?

On PPL checkrides, my FI, who is also a certified examiner, would turn off the whole fancy Garmin moving map stuff and have people navigate by looking out of the window and using VORs and NDBs.I can tell you it was quite a surprise for those who weren't trained by him but decided to do the checkride with him.
