Cessna 310 Ditches 13 mi from Hilo (Ran Out of Fuel)

Would that be because the throttle at full open equals the MAP for economy cruise? Cheers, - jahman.
Yes that is part of it. Your parasite drag is reduced as well. What Zach said is also correct about flying at a higher power setting in headwinds is more fuel efficient but I have to look into my books on what they suggest.

I didn't know a 310 could make it from California to Hawaii. How long of a flight is that? Flying low on this route could cause problems, usually when flying over open ocean you want to be pretty high up. A 310 has a Turboprop engine that allows it to fly at lease in the 20,000ft range.

It was a ferry flight, so it had ferry tanks installed. A C310 is not a turbine aircraft, but rather piston.

I wouldn't fly a piston aircraft from California to Hawaii... Whistle.gif Is there even a toilet on a C310? The speed with a good headwind can't be that much over the old Pan Am Clippers of yesteryear (at least those had creature comforts)...

No toilet....Just use a pee jug if you have to go. I think for this guy this flight was most likely routine for him....Something probably went wrong with the head winds or something. We can't help the weather. Cheers

I'm Dyslexic, what's an error to you is not to me

They had announced it on the radio news when he was about 400 miles out that he knew he wouldn't make it. He was predicting about 25 miles short, I guess in the end about 13. The seas around Hawaii tend to be pretty rough so he did a good job of putting her down. scott s..

You can use a box or a garbage bag.
Wear a diaper Lisa Nowak style.
Haha crazy lady!

I guess so, throw it out the window when your done (it's not like your flying that high above the water). Climbing back from the cockpit to the cabin while the plane is on autopilot might be a little challenge depending on how big you are....

You never leave the seat. You just stand up a little and put the receptacle under your butt.

One may buy a bedpan that's purpose designed at one's local Walgreen's, CVX, or other major pharmacy. Alien.gif

Some WW2 single seat fighters were fitted with a simple tube that ran to the outside of the aircraft. The exit had to be in an area iof moderately low pressure for obvious reasons. On a prototype it was inadvertently located in an area of very low pressure. The first time a test pilot tried to use it he was sucked firmly into it

I've always wondered about that...always afraid to ask....blush.png I can't recall that Ernest Gann ever mentioned that 'Problem' in all his flying hours.. RegardsBill Cusick
