November 3, 201114 yr I was wondering is there a preferred method for defragging my HD with FSX? I have heard different opinions and just want to pick the best for FSX. I have O&O ver 12. Thanks, Tom

November 3, 201114 yr Is it really necessary to defrag your hard disk so often when using FSX? I can't remember the last time that I did this, and I don't seem to suffer from performance problems. I can't remember the last time that I did this, and I don't seem to suffer from performance problems.really depends on how often you install add-ons or other programs. if infrequently, then it's not as important. You'd only notice a difference if your FSX drive was REALLY fragmented otherwise the effect is not really noticeable.I do a space defrag with O&O once a month right after I do my backups. I do a name defrag once every 6 months but I test various programs so I'm always installing and uninstalling stuff.Vic RIG#1 - I9 14900K MSI Pro z790 RTX 5070Ti 40" 4K Monitor 3840x2160

Thanks, TomDitto! The best defrag method is an SSD , or so they say. My next machine will absolutely sport an SSD, even if it's a 500Gb one! Would love to be able to put everything on one drive, and not have that harm performance. Two partitions for dual booting. Makes for a much easier system back up or drive clone than dealing w/ multiple HDD's as I have now. November 4, 201114 yr SSDs are definately the way to go, if you can afford the price tag. A side from no more defrags, I have found load times are faster and scenery loads much faster (less pop-ups).I know that in the FS World OO Defrag is weill know, but another really good defrag program you may want to consider is Diskeeper. http://www.diskeeper.com/ I have been using it on my non-ssd drive PC for years and found that I get better results. November 4, 201114 yr I use AusLogics free Defrag software. Works perfectly.http://www.auslogics.com/en/software/disk-defrag/download/I run it every day before and after using FSX. Overkill maybe but I also use TileProxy and that downloads lots of jpg/bmp files onto the drive during flight so it's worth defragging it afterwards I find.RegardsAdam

However, after defragmentation, the hard disk drive no longer needs to seek all over the platters for your data. This reduces the amount of head actuator movements as well as greatly increasing the hard disk drive's performance.I haven't had a drive let go on me yet and I run four different PC's in my studio. The oldest I built in 2001!Regards,Adam
November 4, 201114 yr Can anyone state what actual performance improvement they obtained as a result of frequent defragging? Gerry Howard

The MTBF figures are determined by many things, among them how many times the heads can be actuated before failing. If you are overly actuating the heads by unnecessary frequent defragging you are shortening the useful life of the HDD. Not an opinion - an engineering fact. Also, unless you are moving huge amounts of date, the amount of fragmentation in one use of FSX is not even measurable. If you feel comfortable doing it that way fine, but I still caution that it will shorten the life of your HDD.Vic RIG#1 - I9 14900K MSI Pro z790 RTX 5070Ti 40" 4K Monitor 3840x2160
