Microsoft Flight: Hawaii Only

And for the 10 GB install: I just checked my default FS9 install and it came in at 2.76GB and that even included the jets that I am going to win $50 from, world wide scenery, textures that cover each of the 4 seasons, land marks at cities, more than 20 maximum AI planes, and airports that actually look like airports and not empty fields and concrete.
Yes, 2.76GB. Now compare the graphical quality of that to what you get out of a 15GB install of FSX. It's a pretty dramatic difference, isn't it? Now look at the quality of graphics we've seen from Flight which is even better than default FSX and try and convince yourself that Flight will offer that kind of quality on a global scale while being 2/3 the size of FSX. Yeah, it's not gonna happen.

Nope, but that's the only way to put MS lovers in front of the reality and not in front the hopeless hopes. ( is that english ? )

I would bet that the sim will not be global, BUT, I would hope that I would lose that bet. I have been waiting for the level of quality that I have seen in the media that MS has provided for years. I really hope MS can deliver this title to be global.

Who has said anything about the high quality stuff being applied to the whole planet? FS has always had areas of detailed scenery. It's OK though, Flight will still have 4/5 seasons of textures and airports that actualy look like airports.

That's the other side of the coin. If it is a worldwide sim then anything outside of Hawaii is most likely going to be generic and low-quality, essentially a bare canvas to be filled in later with $29.99 expansion packs.

Are the non high-quality areas of FSX or FS9 generic and low quality?

In my limited experience with Game For Windows LIVE, you MUST be connected to the internet, or the game is not playable.I hope someone can provide evidence to the contrary, but that's been my experience with the 3-4 games I've owned in the past that utilized GFWL.
The "evidence" you ask about was posted in this very thread just a few hours ago. This quote is directly from the MS/Flight website. What is the point of further speculation on the issue... Yawn.gif
One topic that has been voiced is the concern over online game play. We understand some people are worried that featuring Microsoft Flight on Games for Windows – LIVE will require you to always be connected online to play. Not true. Rest assured that you can play offline if you choose. We hope that you will find the connected experience to be more enjoyable and immersive. But to be clear, the choice will be all yours.

I guess I just would not see the point of MS producing FS9 or FS10 all over again with just an upgraded Hawaii scenery package, plus some nicer clouds and planes. Would not compete too well with a loaded FSX solution.

Yes. But in the case of Flight, they're going to be even lower quality (if they're included at all) because what we've seen of Hawaii could easily take up the majority of that 10GB.

Good point. If Flight is higher quality than FSX in Hawaii, but lower quality in the rest of the world, that begs the question of "who would actually but that?" I know Microsoft has made mistakes before, but that would be like putting out something between FS9 and FSX with Hawaii FS2012. Any takers on FS9.5 with a nice Hawaii scenery pack?

Some things can be procedurally generated on the fly, such as populating the landscape with pre-rendered 3D objects (basically auto-gen scenery), but not to the extent that Arwen initially suggested (and for which she apparently offered clarification), where you could start with a 10GB install and procedurally generate terrain mesh and textures in real-time while the simulator is running. Current desktop computers simply aren't powerful enough for something like that.
I only mentioned it because you did take Arwen to task for discussing how procedurally generated content could reduce memory. And said it wasn't practical.Maybe the confusion is because it is a very broad term. For example, I have seen a Flight screenshot that appeared to show a layered terrain texture. That’s pretty common in games. But it’s not a strong suit in FSX.Improved, it would give more terrain texture variety with far fewer base textures. The layer compositing happens in game – so it’s also procedural content (as opposed to a static texture).I thought it was a good point about how it can improve quality and reduce memory.BTW I think Outerra is an even better example of procedural content.

Or the 10gb is a minimum install, wrong, whatever. All this speculation revovles around that number being the final size of the end user product.

Sorry for my ignorance, but what is minimum install?
