VOR approach - Descent angle

Featured Replies

HiWas hoping someone could point me in the right direction.I am trying to do a VOR approach in the NGX, I learnt how to do it in the MD-11 so have managed to work out everything I need to do in the NGX except how to select and view descent angle.I.e. I do not want to select my descent speed in feet, instead as per the VOR approach for LGKR I need to select a descent angle of 3.38 degrees once I pass GAR waypoint at 2900 feet.So does anyone know how I can tell what my descent angle is in the NGS as I can not seem to find how to select it or see it displayed any where. Thanks in advance

After you've selected the approach, you should be able to see the glide path angle on the legs page. Look for the FAF and there should be a G.P. 3.38 there already. You shouldn't have to add or modify that.

Activate the FPV on the EFIS controller. It will display the flight path angle icon on the PFD. Adjust your pitch etc to establish whatever descent angle you want on the PFD

You can see your descent angle in the FMC "descent" page.On the bottom you get required DA ans actual DA.However, I don't believe -in a 737- a VOR approach is flown by angle but by calculation of vertical speed in relation to GS.Bert Van Bulck

Thanks for all the replies guys will check this out later. Thanks again

Is VNAV available for a VOR final apporach descent?

Use LNAV/VNAV or IAN. There's no need for FPV or VS mode or other gimmicks. The plane will fly the approach as published.

I've never done a VNAV apporoach. Do you need a special "VNAV" VOR approach chart or can you use the standard published VOR approach chart? With the same minima?Bert Van Bulck

Use the same chart. If you're using VNAV, you add 50' to the MDA to get a DDA (derived decision altitude). Once you cross the IAF, dial the field elevation, et voila, LNAV/VNAV takes care of the rest.

About VOR approach. That metodh I always use (even if you can do it with Vnav) is that I´m doing a "CDAP - Approach"= (Constant decent angle approach) Goes like this:1. Dial in the TDZ elevevation to nearest 100 in Altitude Window.2. Go to Approach page in CDU and choose flaps with your Vref speed. (Say it says 135 with flaps 30)3. Dial in your decent/ feet by doing this calculation. (Say Vref 135 divided by 2 X 10 =675 feet/ min, nearest 100 would be 700.4. As soon you reach the FAF, deselect A/P and press V/SNow the ac is following the decent with 700 feet/min, Look at the Green BANANA on ND and adjust to 800 and back if needed. You are aiming with the BANANA at TDZ, when looking on ND.When passing minium or little after, go visual and take hand on the Yoke/ Stick and land.EDIT: The Green Banana have perhaps another colour....GOSH..I´ve forgot the colour...LOL.gif / Leffe

Why do CDAP when vnav can get you there? With CDAP, do you have to dial in the threshold altitiude i9n the altitude window so the green banana depicts reaching landing altitude? If so, you do not have the missed approach altitude ready to go. Does not seem like a RW procedure to me even though it is pretty clevor.

One easy way to fly this approach without LNAV/VNAV and without autopilot is to set the landing elevation on the MCP and the make the curved green line on the ND match the beginning of the runway (thanks to AoA for this tip)

An airline's SOP has the following instruction for non-precision approaches: 1. Create a temporary fix for the "visual descent point" (VDP) at D nM before rwy threshold using the CDU according to the equation: D = (MDA x 3) / 10002. Use VNAV for descent path3. USE LNAV or VOR for lateral guidance,4. After VDP, fly the aircraft with visual references with AP disengaged. That's what I use to do... LNAV/VNAV... works very well.

Set the field elevation where?Bert Van Bulck
