December 10, 201114 yr - Im pretty sure you need to define the distance as well. Example-ORW082/10 Wow....this was a bit more involved than I thought it would be. My initial thinking was this: Flying the 082 radial after ORW, you would eventually get to the PVD263 radial. Wouldn't that intersection be just like an unnamed waypoint? If indeed that intersection had a waypoint name (eg: "ABCDE"), then the route would have been ORW ABCDE PVD. I had assumed that intersection/unnamed fix could have been programmed into the FMC.You can actually create a waypoint at the intersection of 2 radials. You'd enter ORW082/PVD263You know you can do this the old-fashioned way - track the two radials using the AP VOR/LOC mode and the VOR ND mode. That is allowed in real life... In fact I'll bet that's what would really be done in this case - the process for putting this kind of thing into the FMC is likely not worth the time. +1Yesterday on VATSIM I had the routeKPHL PHL8 DITCH V312 DRIFT V308 ORW WOONSWhy is the V312 and V308 needed here? Don't I go directly from DITCH to DRIFT then to ORW? I don't get the V312 or V308 concept here. I know they are precise airways, but is DITCH V312 DRIFT a different route than DITCH to DRIFT.I still can't figure how to program the V312 on the LEGS page. It says waypoint not found in database. In case the others who've answered weren't completely clear, you enter the airways on the RTE page, NOT the LEGS page. Then on the legs page you will see DITCH CYN JIMEE FALON DRIFT. (Have a look at the low enroute chart on Skyvector.com, you'll see that the airway turns at the Coyle VOR) Edited December 10, 201114 yr by Steven_Caffey Steve Caffey
December 10, 201114 yr Commercial Member Simplest answer so far that I've seen is fly it old school, and I would agree. Why is everyone here to try and force something into the FMC for the sake of the magenta line? Track a radial outbound, and track the other radial inbound. Welcome to IFR Navigation guys...Seriously, stuff like this kills me. I teach computer classes and you'd be surprised at what I get asked/told:"So we have this Excel macro I wrote that goes in and relates this one table of information and relates it to another table, so that we can go look it up with a VLOOKUP to determine a final value. You'll never believe how long that took me to write."...and all I can say is:"Oh yes, I can imagine. You know you could've just used Access for that, right?"Don't overcomplicate: Automation is your friend, not your master. If it gets in the way, push it aside until it's helpful again. Kyle Rodgers
December 11, 201114 yr Hi.I asked one of my crew today flying that way, he is their ACARS:"ORW082 PVD263 ARE NOT FIXES. THOSE ARE RADIALS FROM VORS. THEY ARE BASIC ALLY THE SAME.WE CAN PUT THE VOR AND RADIAL BUT W/O A DME OR A POINT OF INTERSECT IT GOES TO INFINITY. ALL CAN BE DONE WITH FMC. WE RARELY USE RAW DATA." December 11, 201114 yr Yesterday on VATSIM I had the routeKPHL PHL8 DITCH V312 DRIFT V308 ORW WOONSWhy is the V312 and V308 needed here? Don't I go directly from DITCH to DRIFT then to ORW? It says waypoint not found in database.Hi.If we're talking about real life situation here is the answer. Before release and initiation of the flight you have to file the Flight Plan via ATC facility. There is set of routes which approved by FAA and you must follow it. Period in! You cannot just shoot custom route to ATC just because you don't like it or it is easier to use. You must use approved route. There are a lot of reasons why you have to stick with ATC/FAA preferred routes, it will take a whole page to explain. When we in Flight Ops need to change a route we put a note on the flight release and ATC Flight plan remarks section why I am using different route, it might be weather, flight delay and pax need to be as fast as possible to catch connections, weight critical flights and stuff like that. But even if we change route we usually use either CDRs (Coded Departure Route) or company approved routes storred in Jeppessen database. We still try to avoid customising routes. If for some reason I am forced to build "my own" route I have to do many phone calls to get the approval with explanation why I am trying to use custom route. So it is not that easy. If you file not coordinated route with ATC you may end up with flight safty report and your license may be taken. December 11, 201114 yr well I think your crew misunderstood. Those two define point of intersect they mention they need, Maybe the lack of slash confused them? --Peter Fabian
December 11, 201114 yr paulyg123Also one of the reason when you are filed via V or J route you will be able to pick all VOR/NDB radials along the route, it is realy handy for airplanes with no FMS or when FMS is deferred for some reason and crew have to fly from VOR to VOR. Flying direct may require GPS and/or FMS working to pick all those intersection because you will be flying on off set profile between the airways and all those intersections are based on charted routes. December 11, 201114 yr A quick look at the low enroute reveals that ORW/082-PVD/263 is another way of saying V465.A standard routing out of my home KCRP heading North is CRP/030 VCT/176... which is an intersection forming about a 30-deg turn rather than in-line as in the ORW-PVD example. After programming it into the Garmin for a couple of years I finally suggested to a controller friend that they name an intersection there. Hey he said, that's a good idea and in six months (pretty fast service for the FAA) we had a named intersection at that corner (BOLKS). They didn't let me suggest a name, darn it. Dan Downs KCRP
December 11, 201114 yr Greetings all,I am trying to program the following route from KEWR-KBOS.....MERIT ORW ORW082 PVD263 PVD ORW3. I would assume that after ORW, I fly the 082 degree radial until intercepting the PVD263 radial, and then turn direct to PVD. How do I program this into the FMC? I tried ORW082 and ORW/082, and couldnt get it to work. What is the correct way of doing it? Many thanks.Enter the route as follows:MERIT ORW ORW082/PVD263 PVDYou need to do it on the LEGS page. I don't know offhand if you can enter a place bearing/place bearing waypoint on the ROUTE page.
