My thoughts after purchasing XP10

Featured Replies

I think that editing aircraft is fraught with peril if you don't know exactly what you're doing. Based on comments I've read from Goran and others, you change one number and it can have a domino effect on other parts of the aircraft.Maybe wait for Carenado to update their planes for XP10, and if you're still not happy then contact them and report the inconsistency.

MortenM, that was an interesting post you made a page back about how xplane works with creating the airfoil. As someone who has never looked at this side of xplane I was probably like a lot of other people who had heard about creating the model of the plane and then xplane works out how it should fly. I.e. once the 3d model is made thats it. Obviously that is not the case and I would have to read up some more to understand what all the parameters do. What it would seem to me is that the method employed could involve a lot of trial and error. Blade element theory is applied to the mathematical model of the airfoil but the airfoil is a 'fictional' one made up to give the averaging effect of the real one. If that is right, I would be scratching my head to figure out how it caters for strange wings where some conditions may effect the airfoil in certain points in RL but the model is only an average. I guess some reading would help my understanding.

I am happy enought with the Carenado (other than poor manifold pressure, performance which I assume is more the sim than the plane). It is the default aircraft that rather hugely turn off people from using the sim that bothers me-there is no reason I can fathom to do that...Someone who reads this first line on the xp site:"X-Plane is the world’s most comprehensive and powerful flight simulator for personal computers, and it offers the most realistic flight model available"..and then tries the defualt will be not feeling this way...that is unfortunate....and I think we see our own microcosm of that happening.

WANTED DEAD OR ALIVE-the best Flight Sim!

One would think that if you were going to sell to the public, you would but your first effort out at as close to perfect as you could get. My gripe is this comany wastes time and effort on silly things such as bird strikes, deer on the runway and trivial things like this. What possible good can come in having a bloody mess smeared on your windshield, in the mean time the aircraft you are supposed to be developing are sorely lacking in the most important refinements. Then to top that off they put fictional aircraft, stuff that is IMO, (and not so humble either), is completely wacky. WASTE of time, EFFORT. We know that better planes exist. So why not throw paying customers a bone. I think perhaps this company needs to hire a marketing strategist, or if they do have one, they should probably change for a better one. Probably a good general manager wouldn't hurt either. That said, I like the sim for what it is, but it is frustarating to know it could so easily be better. The foregoing is of course, MY opinion only, and I fly this thing everyday anyway.

...im curious to know from our real world pilots such as Geofa and others, is there a chance of compiling a short list of 3rd party planes that they feel are worth flying within the new X-Plane 10 environment? The very best I mean (other than the Carenado F33).Also, Im in search of some in game screenshots or video of Xplane 10 in and around the Long Island, NY area so I can get a feel for what the visuals look like in my area since that's where I like to do alot of my flying. If anyone knows of a source please let me know....many thanks to all!

I'll try to get a video done for you if someone else doesn't beat me to it....<edit> just took one-didn't turn out well-now my wife wants to see a movie...hopefully you will get it somehow...

Here is a link to a freeware plane that is worth considering. It is a Piper Archer III done by MortonM and his team. It doesn't have a 3D cockpit, (hint to MortonM, I would pay for a 3D cockpit Money%20Eyes.gif ), but a wonderful plane nonetheless, defenitly , (where in the world did the spell checker go?), payware quality. http://forums.x-plane.org/index.php?autocom=downloads&showfile=8870&k=bb2fe024f8a71424996db6d9af08c1fc&settingNewSkin=3Here is a plane that is freeware put out by XPFR a B17, that is as real as it gets. Be forwarned this plane is not for the person who only has a few minutes to spare. You must start this plane yourself and it will probably take you an hour the first time, unless you ARE a real world B17 pilot with lots of experience. I haven't tried this plane in XP10 as I haven't had the time to devote to it. I have ported it over and I will be surprised if it doesn't work pretty well as good as in XP9.70 http://xpfr.org/?body=aero_hangars&av=62Here are two planes I will guarantee, they are as close as you are going to get, with the constraints of todays computers, to there real world counterparts. If you have the time, try that B17, as a matter of fact I need to get over to XFR and buy something.

Show her the movie you just made while you do another.

that Archer is beautiful...screams for a vc though, and yes, I'd pay for it too!

For payware,Jason Chandler does pretty good GA flight models, his cockpits tend to be a bit underdone, although I only own his C172, so can't talk definetly about his other planes.Any thing done by Javier Rollon, is a good, no, Excellent grab. Javiers, Mentor T34C, it is to die for, to coin a phrase. There are so many artists out there, so many, so little time. Go to the X-Plane.Org go to the download page and watch the most popular downloads. Not all of them are good, but it is surprising how many are good. The nice thing abut X-Plane extract on folder, and you have a new plane, if it isn't any good throw it away. Here is a link by the way, before I forget. http://www.x-plane.org/XPFR has a lot of good feeware out. If you are into VFR fling as I am, they have a Ercoupe that is really fun. I was going to let you search for it, but it is so much fun here is the link, http://www.xpfr.org/?body=aero_accueil&av=64I can't keep anything to my self. LOL

Wow! The Archer does an amazing job of capturing the weight and momentum of a real aircraft. That was the most realistic takeoff I've ever had in a flight simulator...realistic acceleration and a nice weighty nose...felt perfect! I also tested cruise performance...at 2000 feet and 2300 RPM the airspeed was dead on!I wasted money a couple days ago on a payware GA airplane for X-Plane that flies like a joke - thankfully it was on sale! I'd happily pay for this Archer if it had a 3D cockpit. A couple of planes that I've purchased so far that I like are the Carenado F33A (love it) and Carenado Cessna 172.

I always watch for MortonM. One thing I can;t figure out, is he strictly freeware, or does he do payware? I know he is on a big project now so will have to wait and see. LOLHere;s a link: http://www.xplanefreeware.net/

Looks like 10.03 Beta 8 was just released, and one of the new features is that it takes you straight to the controller calibration screen the first time you run it, so maybe complaints based on poorly configured controls will start to finally diminish.
