Viewing approach charts as you fly

Featured Replies

I'm surprised nobody mentioned skyvector.net. I just go to the website, find the chart for the airport, then fly...usually put it on the iPad when I get a chance to use it...

I'd have to see how much paper I'd use. Thanks.

I see Americans are still unaware of the fact that there are other countries in the world :)
I don't know if buying an iPad for viewing charts would be worth it. Other than the charts I don't see much use for it. And those are $500-800 or so.
There are alternatives, especially if all you want to do is view documents. There are tablets available for under $150 that will do this.

Every modern videocard can run two screens. FSX in windowed mode allows other programmes to run on the second screen. Monitors are really cheap and give-away prices second-hand. You can set up for very little money. This is a really necessary and straightforward solution. It also allows you to undock 2D popups and move them to the second window. Same but different in full screen mode. Some time ago I purchased Simplates X from a runout sale - they are no longer supported and out of date, but they still make for a good test and I run the plates on a laptop set up nearby.nDac - not expensive, updated and first rate, though not enough Australian airports outside the main ones. FSFollow on your iPad, or simply transfer the PDFs to your iPad. EFB on a two screen setup - the programme sequences the charts. In other words there is almost an endless array of utilities that can let you read approach plates. And the helpful people above have listed most. PDF kneeboard is one I'm going to try.Remember that two screens and adobe reader are all you need for departure, arrival and approach nirvana.

I agree, but look at my picture: at my age I find wireless homegroup setups almost impossible to make work. However I have a second videocard that I use for a third monitor, It relieves the main videocard from having to process the UI but it of course still requires the CPU to do the processing. Can Nirvana be a compromise, I suspect not?

Ian,Do you use WIndows 7? With this OS it is really easy to set up a wireless homegroup connection!

I am also sticking to my iPad for showing all the charts and I have a couple of apps to do that. FSKneeboard works the best but only works with US charts, then I have Circle to Land for other countries (mainly in Europe). A nice thing with the iPad is that you can use an app like Airdisplay to control another computer and show its desktop. So you can virtually run the Aivlasoft program or Topcat on the iPad.
