Ground textures look AWFUL!

Lets hear from Bristol86 and see if the changes suggested made any difference. We're bombarding him with suggestions and he hasn't even told us if he's tried any of them or if anything worked. Lets see what he says.

Hi AllThanks to everyone for their help so far!I decided to start from scratch and then start gradually making changes to one thing at a time, and am now happy (well, happier...) with the way things are looking. The textures now look much better and less blocky, which is good, but still take a lot of time to "pop in" to place when viewing in spot mode. Is this common? What can I do to increase the speed at which the texures become sharp? When I slew to a new area it takes a long time for the textures to go from blurry to sharp. Thanks!

Have you thought about installing the free version of VOZ 1.8 for FS 2004?Makes a "World" of difference to the Textures, with colours, etc, for different seasons. (Suitable for the whole World).Brings FS 2004 to life!Paul...FS 2004, FS Navigator, and colourful scenery!... :( ...!..and, of course...there's always REX for FS 2004!With a few add-on, bits and bobs, we can make FS 2004 just as pretty as FSX!.... :( ...!

I don't understand why you are having this problem. Your PC is much more powerful than mine (ie mine is single P4 2.8 ,2GB RAM .Gforce 6600gt 256 mb GCard ) and yet I don't suffer with long texture drawing problems.USUALLY! one of the main causes is the TEXTURE BANDWIDTH MULTI setting (the default setting is 10 which does result in marked texture lag when panning in cockpit or spot) I notice in your CFG it was some strange number like 32600 how you arrived at that I don't know, but try it at 400 (I believe anything greater 400 makes no difference anyway) .On my PC altering from 10 (default )to 400 has a marked effect on texture draw times .cheers AndrewIf you can speak German or don't mind a bit of guesswork (its all pretty obvious really ) Flusifix is by far the best tweaker for FS9 (fsx version to) that I have used (FREE as well) all sorts of tweaks for to help get the best out of your sim.Try the TEXTURE BANDWIDTH thing though.Andy

Andy, I second what you write about Flusifix. Excellent tool! Just would like to add that Flusifix recommends a Texture Bandwidth Mult in the range of 900 to 1500, with 1200 as a start for trials to find out which setting gives the best results on your system. The value can easily be changed with a slider in the FS9.cfg section of Flusifix.Regards,René

Good morning ReneMaybe you have a different or newer version than mine.I have just opened up Flusifix and had a look at the the TEXTURE BANDWIDTH entry and on my version (FS9 version ) it definitely goes from the default (which is 40 )I incorrectly stated in my post that it was ten so that was an error on my part, to a maximum of 400.My personal setting is something like 360.cheers Andy

Hi Andy,My version is 6.5. Did a quick check at the website of the maker (www.wolfgang-picheta.de) and 6.5 appears to be the current version (for FS9). Dates back to June 2008 though. Anyway, the slider can be moved from 40 to 2000, but 'Wolli' suggests to experiment in the range 900 to 1500. In the accompanying text he says (translated from German): "According to most recent findings, very high settings render an enormous performance boost." And also: "On the condition that FPS are set at a sensible value, like e.g. 24." Obviously, it all boils down to what one finds satisfying on a particular system, but experimenting does't do any harm. By the way, Wolli doesn´t say anything about the influence of GPU or the size of graphic card memory. I'm still doing trials with settings around 1200, and I do see an improvement at higher settings, but to be honest I do not see much difference between, say, 900 and 1200.Kind regards,René

*grabs some popcorn.Always entertaining to see people who insist that if it's not their specific .cfg value, then the other person MUST be wrong. :)

AndyThanks, it IS very frustrating when you spend the money on the hardware and don't see the results you expect. Not to mention the countless £££'s spent on add ons to improve the visual elements. I have purchased mesh, ground environment, ultimate terrain, rex etc etc.I will do as you say and play around with the TEXTURE BANDWIDTH MULTI and see how I get on, failing that, will try the Flusifix app you mention! Thanks

Well, I've tried playing around with the TEXTURE_BANDWIDTH_MULT setting, everything from 10 to 400 and back to my 25600 or whatever it was, no real difference with any of it.Textures look good when they load, but for example slewing to a new area for testing, it can take in excess of 30 secs for all the textures to pop in...Has to be something simple, it can't be hardware related surely

I assume your not a new FS user looking at all your addons .Have you always had this issue ?I don't know what FS9 settings you are running ,but perhaps you will have to restrict those a little.(Its a little difficult sometimes to have to admit that your PC may not be able to run everything on maximum settings. Also some aircraft models that I have I know will cause greater performance issues than others ie.FFX, VISTALINERS aircraft are fantastic for a smooth running sim flight ,others (for some reason some IFDG airbuses cause overall performance to drop) I notice that you have PMDG,PSS,WILCO I think these are all payware and from what I read of the detail involved in these models probably require a lot more horsepower to run than say my aforementioned FFX s etc.Anyways some thoughts ,but I admit that with my limited(increasing slowly) knowledge ,I don't think I can help you further.Good luck with it.AndyPS One little mistake on my part the default for TBM is actually 40 not 10 as I said.PPS I do note that you have a lot of scenery addons ,whether that is causing slow downs I don't know.I only use FSGLOBAL2006 ,Activesky 6.something ,and thats it for me.You quote thirty second scenery draw sometimes and I have never experienced anything like that ,even with my Jurassic PC.

Right!I am going to try 84,000,000,000 Flight so smooth ,the living room will FLY.Actually I may try 1200, but it all rather smacks of placebo-itis to me. aNDY

Only reason I don't know that it is placebo Andy is that at 25600 which someone once recommended I got all sorts of graphics errors. At 4000 I get no errors and things are great with unlocked FPS and VSync enabled to lock at 60FPS... So while it may not have any positive impact to back up your placebo-itits I think it is doing something as it clearly affected my setup...Nut that could just be me :)

Have a Wonderful Day

BRISTOL86 you may not be adjusting the TEXTURE_BANDWIDTH_MULT correctly.Words from Steve Lacey (RIP: http://betanews.com/...er-steve-lacey/ )I captured Steve's entire post which was found here: http://www.steve-lac..._stutters.shtml but is now a dead link.Maybe read the link below and see if it helps:http://www.mycockpit...hp/t-11106.htmlGood LuckRJ
