FSDreamteam, Virtuali and GSX

Featured Replies

Late last year, as some of you may recall, I purchased a scenery which used the Virtuali installer. It was not a positive experience at the time and I pretty much vented my frustrations out here in the forum. I gave up on ever installing that scenery and swore I would never ever buy anything that required Virtuali.Fast forward to day before yesterday... I installed the demo of GSX that night and it didn't work. Nothing. On Thursday morning, I spent a couple of hours doing everything I could do to get it to work. Finally, I gave up again, but made the bright move (Duh!) of contacting Umberto. Once again I told Umberto that I would not go down this path again, and asked if there was any less complicated way to install an add-on.Umberto responded and responded and responded. He responded throughout the evening his time on Thursday, well into the night. He was also answering questions, giving guidance and obviously participating here while he patiently put up with yours truly. To make a long story short, and to register this as a "lesson learned", he made GSX work for me.I don't consider myself a slouch at PC's and trouble shooting programs, however this one flummoxed me. Umberto, after having walked through a number of possibilities, asked a simple question; "Virtuali is not in your Internet Explorer's Untrusted Publishers list is it?".... Sure enough, Virtuali was labeled an Untrusted Publisher and no matter how many uninstalls and re-installs I did, or how much time I spent rearranging the registry... simply put, GSX was not going to work! The system would not allow GSX to install at all! I removed Virtuali from the Untrusted Publishers list and viola, GSX installed flawlessly and worked like a charm. How Virtuali made it to my Untrusted Publishers list is beyond me. I didn't put it there! Maybe someday someone can explain that to me.So I would like to publicly state that Virtuali works and Umberto did a fantastic job of putting up with me and going beyond the limit to see that we got GSX to work. Thanks Umberto; that was quite a demonstration of customer support you provided yesterday beyond measure. As for GSX; what a difference!

Glad you got it up and running and glad I never use Internet Explorer.

Umberto is great and he has a superb team of designers. He really went the extra mile for you Tom and I'm glad you stuck it out. I probably would have been so close to pulling the plug on his products had I gone through the same situation as you, but Umberto knows his trouble shooting, doesn't he? He's probably seen it all. Is this worth buying then, even though I use small regional airports?

Unfortunately the trusted/untrusted status of publishers is completely independent of the browser you may use. IE is just one of the ways you can access the publshers lists, which are built into Windows mechanisms. Other browsers do provide such access too these days (at least i know Firefox does) but in the early days, even using another browser, you still had to access the lists using IE.RegardsPete

Virtuali and Umberto are the single biggest conflict in the history of FS.Virtuali is the worst darn thing I have ever seen and Umberto has the best darn support I have ever seen...Go figure :-)

Yeah, going straight to the developer for support is pretty much always the right first step. And in the case with FSDT it's usually the only step required. Glad the problems have been sorted. On my first test flight now with GSX, but I'm guessing there will be a purchase at the end of the "road".

Original thread here. The problem isn't Virtuali per se, or the need for an Add-On Manager, or untrusted publisher lists. The problem is and always has been about dumb installers and run-tiime DLLs that don't give intelligent feedback to the person trying to install or run the software. To wit, if the Add-On Manager is missing, why not have the scenery requiring that add-on post an informative message to that effect together with a practical button of the sort "Would you like to re-download and install the missing Add-On Manager now? Yes/No." Not so hard to do. Heck, some folks even wrote a scenery package that automatically downloads satellite photo tiles as you fly along, so getting a scenery add-on to post a simple message on the screen can't be that hard.)Or if the installer needs to not be on the Untrusted Publisher list, well, that's also something that can be checked for and even automatically fixed (Admin status required.).Developpers do push farr too much of their anti-piracy shenanigans onto all of us decent, 100% add-on-paying customers, so for me the DLC Store of MS Flight that will put an end to these nonsense will be a welcome relief (should Flight ever add features for the serious simmer, that is.)You know, time is money, and having to debug installation issues because of poor installers can be far more costly than the add-on itself, especially when you have to negotiate time away from the family or family chores only to spend that time on nonsesical installation issues instead of simming. "Honey, how was yous simming?" "Great, just great, made a new friend in La Bella Italia."Cheers,- jahman.

Tom, that was the kind of post that makes one come to Avsim. And kudos to Umberto. After such a testimony and If I had flown heavies instead of GA, I would have bought GSX in a heartbeat.
