SSD or not?!

Featured Replies

Hey guys, I haven´t been arround the hardware forum for quite a time now (Cause everything worked quite well.) but since I do only fly the NGX I have sometimes a pretty big FPS problems (14 FPS and shuttering down at some addon airports). If you check my sig I normally shouldn´t have this problem, it´s normally pretty fast. But what I do know is that my HDD, which has two partititions (One smaller for the OS and the rest for FSX and everything else) is pretty crappy and this could lead to my bad results in some areas. So i thought to take a bit of strain off my HDD and get an small SSD for the OS and everything what is is that partitition (currently 55GB heavy) and let the rest on the main HDD to maybe boos the FPS a bit.I´m not a really wise guy in terms of HDD´s and SSD´s, so could you give me some idea how much this chnage would be worth the money?

Best regards, Steffen

Totally NOT worth the money. Get a 1TB Caviar Black for all of the extra storage and pretty fast speeds. SSD's are a waste of money IMO.

I am thinking about geting the SSD as well. One of my mates got the SSD and forgot about sluttering (even with 18-20 fps it's smooth), but he actually had 10000RPM drive before and had sluttering in fsx, so i guess it's good thing, but it's too expencive today...You can see my rig below, and I have lags in many addon airports...I hate this, because I have smooth sim, and just airports kill my fps and smoothness.

SteffenAn SSD (wrt FSX installed on it) only affects loading times it has no significant effect on FPS - with FSX on a SSD it will load faster and you may get less texture lag when running FSX.I've used one solely for FSX for the last 2 years and my frame rates are unchanged.IMHO It is a waste of money to use an SSD for the OS what are you gaining by the OS opening faster? For the OS and FSX if you had had a Z68 mobo you could have used a small SSD (up to 60GB) as a system cache which again helps with loading, not sure if you can do that on a P67.As a side note on my other FSX install I use a 500GB Momentus XT eSATA which has 4Gb SSD on board (as cache) a conventional HDD and that works quite well.A VRAP is another HDD to consider.RegardsPeterH

Honestly if you are going to get an ssd make it count. Don't buy one for 1 app or game. Buy one where you are gonna get the most benefit from it i.e. OS.I use mine for FSX and the OS and a few games. Still got about 50% left.

This is the reoccurring topic, isn't it? Just when we think we won't see this question for another few years, it comes back up in a new thread! The SSD lemon isn't worth the squeeze unless you have money to throw at one. There's no FPS gain, no help with texture loading. Only better load times. I even sold mine last year because it was taking up space and only saving me seconds in a day. If someone wants to give me one, I'll use it! But my last SSD purchase had me suffering more from buyer's remorse than any other hardware. Ever.

It's hard to put a price on time saved loading up FSX. My load times weren't significantly faster (3.5 minutes?!).Mine is currently 1.5 minutes on the Caviar black.

Well, guys, I think you understood me wrong. I know that a dedicated SSD for FSX isn't worth the money and I don't plan onto doing it. I tjink of getting an 60GB one or so for the OS and leave the old one with FSX and everything else where it is.

Best regards, Steffen

I love my 128GB SSD,I hate waiting, so having the OS up and ready in 8 seconds (after the POST, all about 35 seconds) is brilliant!Recommended if you have some spare mullahEdit: Just timed it for fun with correct values :)

It probably isn't "worth the money" but I love having windows and FSX do stuff fast. Now my problem is my 128 Gb SSD is full with Win 7 and FSX. scott s..
