RV flight characteristics

Featured Replies

I'm trying to trim the RV for level flight and notice that unlike other airplanes I've flown in FSX,the throttle does not have much, if any effect on pitch...Is there something different about this airplane that would take away the old "adjust pitch with thethrottle" rule?

Bert

I just got through flying around with the RV for the past hour or so and I noticed the same thing. In addition lowering the flaps has no effect on the speed or pitch of the aircraft. In fact I lowered the flaps to full, cut the throttle, and I was still able to do loops so I guess the RV has an easy flight model. An interesting thing that I did notice about the plane was the flaps are notchless. I have the flaps mapped to a joystick button and you have to hold down the button to set the flaps wherever you want them. But like I said doing that had zero effect on the flight characteristics of the plane.Todd

Very odd. The RV is a very "slick" aircraft and does not bleed energy like the Stearman or the Maule. I also had a problem slowing her down (made landing at dirt strips HARD) but not to the excess that your posting about. Make sure the "flight aids" are turned off in the settings.

All flight aids were turned off when I flew the RV.Todd

It works, but the RV reacts not immadiately.Though it is a fast clean aircraft it takes time to feel changes. You need to go below 20% power or even less (up to 0%) to loose altitude when leveled.Same for the flaps, it is not an high lift aircraft and the small flaps have not that much effect, but they have. For the flap switch it is like ti is in the real aircraft, although many owners modify them to have detents.Edit: Maybe it helps to use the inbuilt approach/landing checklist.

Well, I had problems at first. Then I harkened back to the days of "Jane's" combat sims, and landing the F/A-18 on the carrier deck. Full flaps; Nose high; throttle for altitude; nose down to increase speed, nose up to reduce it And, of course, Prop RPM @ 100%. It requires a very delicate touch. Plus, you can't see the rnwy try to be doing about 80kts to 100ft, then cut power, drop the nose, and land. It takes a while to get the hang of it, but it feels really cool when you doRB

The NACA 23013.5 is a low moment wing airfoil which means speed changes result in less pitch change than e.g .with a classic NACA 2412Nevertheless I've never hear about a adjust pitch with the throttle method. On the other hand, MS never made very realistic flight models why shoud they start now.......if they are not going to allow 3rd party developers to build and sell planes, FLIGHT will be very short lived within the flightsim community.

After a little further flying I do see that the RV reacts slowly. And thanks for mentioning the cool interactive checklist that I had never seen!Todd

Never flown an RV, but with full realism settings (aids sliders off) there certainly are pitch variations due to flap and throttle settings!I am really enjoying each and every modell. Haven't bought the Maule yet, but it certainly is the next :-)

I find the pitch control too sensitive with my joystick. It's almost like there is a jump when pushing the stick forward or back a tiny amount.

Same here. Needs tweaking...

The initial twitch may also come from the head-bobbing code kicking in... I'll have to fly her some more..

I built and have many hours in a real RV-6 (conventional gear). The flight model is very very close to the real thing!1. They are very difficult to get slow.2. With the electronic flap option installed, there are no notches. Counting in your head and looking is best way to judge.3. They are very light on the controls. I flew with thumb and two fingers. If anyone has questions, I will do my best to answer them.

Yes, takes a long time to slow with a fixed pitch prop, and is quick to slow with a constant speed. I could descend down a canyon at 2000 fpm and still loose speed for an airport landing at the bottom. My flaps were mostly done by eye. Used half flaps more than full. The RV pitches down with flap deployment, but doesn't require a noticeable pull on the stick, as you'd push the yoke forward to arrest the ballooning in a Cessna 172. When you do use flaps, the deceleration is noticeable. Never used throttle for pitch...........except for landing. Just use the stick, and point to where you want to go. I suppose its why I go with the "when power is available, it's throttle for speed, and pitch for altitude". My 6A could be at pattern height, halfway down the runway (4607' msl). The real RV is very easy to trim. Mine has electric pitch & roll trim on a hat switch. However, the RV isn't what you'd call a stable platform. It will deviate quickly, with minor movements of the stick. I very much enjoyed my altitude auto-pilot for long cross countries. As stated above, the controls are very light..............and balanced as well. Kind of like a mini-fighter.......and somewhat like a Marchetti SF260.L.Adamson --- RV6A 180HP/ Hartzell constant speed

I have time in an rv and I find the roll way too fast.
