Outerra, the next FSX?

Featured Replies

Ok, I never noticed that :)
Because the effect works so well. I think the Outerra people are very plugged into the aesthetics of their creation.

Yes, exactly. Still long way to go - no animation, no reflection, no bumps etc, but we are very positive - it will be done, no doubts about it.

Geez, this engine appears awesome! What sort of performance/smoothness is it getting?

Thanks for those fantastic screens! The future is here.

For some reason FS developers flat out state that the Outerra engine is not suitable for any detailed flight simulation.Bryan.
That's not very accurate IMO. Sure, it would be an extraordinary challenge to implement all the hardcore FSX style systems. The majority of the work would be ahead. But it is a suitable start - I haven't really heard otherwise myself. As a casual flight sim it’s pretty much ready now ;) I think what’s promising about Outerra is that it seems to use a middleware approach to building games - different components could be built by separate specialized companies.

I've always thought that was what made FSX such a decent platform--the SDKs. I think the next gen simulator needs to be just this--a core platform for others to develop components for, as we see w/ 3rd party products for FSX. Excellent graphics engine, mesh down to 1cm or whatever is doable on the coming hardware, excellent built in ATC (FSX's wasn't bad for its time), and leave the rest to 3rd party folks.

Yep, the only way there is ever going to be a world simulator with a reasonable degree of realism and aquarcy is if it can me modded. The really big challenge though is organizing it so it doesn't end up like the chaotic FSX addon scene.

I think these people have a better chance than almost anyone for the perfect sim, if they can just survive long enough. Its always seemed to me that traditional Flight Sims start with the planes, instruments, systems. weather, ATC, AI and etc and then the world comes as a sort of paste on bit of plausible eye-candy. Starting with the world first and working outwards gives a depth of detail and eventual flexibility that nothing else currently in existence can match.

Couldn't agree more! I'd rather have a quality sim/game that is built brick by brick with few bugs and compromises, than a big complex monster from day one.
