Outerra, the next FSX?

Im surprised how many old timers on here like psolk and pic007 have never heard of this as many times as this has been posted in the FSX, Flight, and PMDC NGX forum. Looks like a great developement and I surely hope in the next 10 years we have a sim that looks that good.

What remains bizarre to me is why someone, these folks, Apple, Microsoft, isn't developing the next durable, scalable, robust platform for next gen flight simulation for the masses and of course for commercial use. Maybe Prepare3d has something going I don't know. I don't care what the nay sayers say: a first class platform would attract new business if done really well. The iPhone version of Flight Simulation. iFly! You can't use FSX as the basis for this market--it's too convoluted, too dated, too gerry rigged, etc. I'm talking about something worthy of a 7 year service life. That means ORBX, PMDG, etc will be able to count on something to develop for. There needs to be collaboration from the start, between the 3rd party devs on the core platform developer. Tell me you wouldn't drool over the possibilities! These folks are not committing for sims like Outerra because they don't have the assurance of where it's going and for how long. I'm telling you--build the robust platform designed w/ a 7 yr lifespan, very robust SDKs, great ATC, highest resolution global mesh, multiprocessor support up to 12 cores, etc etc and all of a sudden you have commitment from the 3rd party developers. And it's not like no one knows how to do this stuff my goodness, there's already huge history in this regard! I know the nay sayers will be teased out with this, but sorry I'm not buyin' it! In fact, it's just a matter of time.

At first sight, graphically it has some simularities with the new AeroflyFS simulator from Icarus.http://www.aeroflyfs.com/index.php/en/ AeroflyFS first version has great potential but is also very restricted at this stage: only Switzerland (stunning graphics !) , instruments: only the 'basic six' for VFR flying (radio's are eye candy at this moment), no fuel or weight control, no propellor or mixture control yet, no real weather, no radio's so no NAV, no IFR and no ATC, but beautifully rendered photographic scenery, nice shadows, great sound, very smooth, no stutters, good flight dynamics thanks to their experience with gliding simulation i suppose.Defenitely a simulator to keep an eye on ! :(

With kind regards,

I have now and they have my attention! Tks

I've supported these talented guys by paying for the demo. I hope other will as well so Outerra can be taken to the next stage.

Why not try Swizerland Professional for FSX in the mean time.....

Just two screenshots, Altai mountains - Siberia, Russia. FSX mesh 100, mesh resolution 1m. Coordinates are on the screen you may check yourself. I do belive Outerra engine is future of VFR flight simulation, we need to help Outerra guys make it true.Clip_45.jpgClip_3.jpg

Tried the Outerra demo and the terrain is quite impressive, with no performance or OpenGL issues here!I like the way the LOD system works, giving lots of detail the closer you get... the only bad thing is the horrible flat tress at the moment. There is potential here.

That comparison certainly looks promising. I fear it will probably be 5 more years before they can do anything flight sim worthy with the engine though. Of course, I hope I'm wrong.

What do you mean by flat tress?

The trees, at least in the demo, are totally flat rotating images that always face your viewpoint, rather like the clouds in FSX, but the effect here is less subtle.

Even knowing that, i have always found the effect barely noticeable unless I actually flew into the trees. :(

We are all connected..... To each other, biologically...... To the Earth, chemically...... To the rest of the Universe atomically.

Ok, I never noticed that :)
