AOPA's Flight Review - "Negative transfer of learning"

Featured Replies

Here's what the editor of AOPA's Flight Training magazine thinks of Flight:http://www.aopa.org/...U4a4ZUcNA-U1LY-Personally, I don't agree. I think Flight can be used, within reason, to introduce basic and advanced concepts of both VFR and IFR flying.

I think it's quite a good, well balanced review. I get where he's coming from. IMO you're far less likely to use Flight as a training tool than one of the Flight Simulator titles. It lacks a lot of the customization you would expect from a training tool, like 100% customizable weather - yes you've got a few presets to choose from but you can't go as far as to specify the exact visibility and wind speed/direction, and the cloud base and tops for example.

good review.i use fsx and x-plane10 to fly my VFR flight planning sheets created during the navigation lessons in our flight school.i need the correct location, nav aids, plane (mostly c172 or c152) and weather. I can't do that with ms flight.

I like many others would love to see LIVE WEATHER and the few other things that we all know are missing and as far as i can tell i think the DEVS up there have some good little things coming in the next few months . I wonder if he had used any DLC and notice you could flight a VOR or a ILS ??? .We also have a new feature in Flight that should of been there years ago and that is the use of radios for communications out of the box instead of having to download any other software to do so .Now imagine having John and Martha from kings schools with some basic tutorials for free and some more training as DLC ??? or perhaps a basic Flight school from MSF team...

Never Had MSFS so with my only experience being with Flight I have no problem with that review.Totally agree with him on the fun factor and Flight is making me think about getting FSX.ps approaching level 15 in Flight. A lot of crashes, a ot lot of smiles.

Well I have been reading a lot about this new game Flight, the hardcore games (one myself, and real pilot) are complaining about it's lack of realism and simulation. In the other others are really happy about it's simplicity and pc friendly, and some more i candy features. In the end both may be right. IMHO we are just losing the basics here. Flight at this time, at this stage (let's be clear, because it has the potential to become a more solid and more likely a simulator) it's just a game, just like a Play Station game, it's the same as flying a P51 or a Japanese Zero in for instance Battlefield 1943, or Top Gun in PS, it's the same, just a basic game. I can already see al the comments comming from dissapointed Flight fans, but please don't feel insulted, that was what MS intended, and there's nothing wrong with it, Hardcore simmer can still stick to FSX or FS9 and keeping making it as real as it gets, improving their skills and enjoying a more real simulation wtih all the add ons available. This Flight forum could be perfeclty placed in the PS action games forums as well, no offense please, it is not my intention. Finally, i like both styles, when it comes to simulation, I for sure pcik up FS, and when I just want to have an I candy flight with no flight worries or duties, I pick up Flight.just my two cents

Flight is in its early days . this time MS took a diferent way of doing things and with time all the few things that we were used too will come back at a price or not .Im willing to start over (Keep in Mind that FSX keeps runing in my server for the FDS hardware that can only be used with FSX and the tons of add ons i own .ill stay positive and i know it will pay off with time. There is one thing we can do or learn how to do , we can all be mature and interact in the forums with diferent opinions and i respect anyone elses point of view towards FLIGHT...

I think the key quote in that review is: "It is fantastic as an inspirational tool. It is fun to play. It feels really like you are in the air. The scenery is spectacular. The missions are fun. The airplanes are fun."I can't argue with any of that. And he only had the free stuff.

Ticosimmer, you have actually tried Flight, right? If not you're missing out. :)It didn't sound to me like you've used Flight yet.I also strongly feel MS made a huge mistake in not including an aircraft with VOR receivers, transponder, etc. in the free download. It is a HUGE turnoff for any serious flight simmer.

Sorry but this game is nowhere near as basic as the flying in Battlefield or Top Gun. Have you even played the game? Flown anything besides the Icon? Flight has plenty of depth and I am inclined to think you havent spent any more than maybe an hour or two playing Flight. Once you get passed flying around balloons and the other tutorials there is a fantastic flight sim in there.

I think that comparing it to Battlefield is not doing it justice. Flight is about the act of flying, as in operating aircraft. It is not about procedures or communication, it focuses on one thing, and as far as I can tell, does it well (flight-model, modelation of winds, belieavable landscape, ILS). Battlefield aircraft are no way that advanced. It's like saying that grand turismo is just like mario kart, because it doesn't simmulate communication with team well enough. The whole experience is narrower - that's true. But still I can't see how is it unrealistic.

my two cents? I feel that was a fair and balanced review. The quote that struck closest to home was (and I may misquote) "great as an inspirational tool"...I feel this is what Flight, in it's current form, does best. At least for me, it captures the joy of basic flight.I also agree that there could be (again, I may misquote) some "negative learning". As with any tool, if used incorrectly often enough, the habit becomes ingrained. There is a lot that is missing from Flight to be an all-encompassing simulation, but it's a great start!

Sure i have tried it, bu now I'm starting to decrease the interest in Flight although it is still in my PC HD. As said, it is a "fun" game I like it, don't misunderstand me, but it feels just like Battlefield 1943, which by the way I also like very much to play ( ok, maybe flying in Battlefield 1943 is harder to master.)cheers
but it feels just like Battlefield 1943
Flying in the Battlefield series is like a joke, there isn't even a realistic throttle, let alone any instrument, wind effect, or control beyond "wasd".

That's my point, dragging the airplane with a mouse it's almost the same, you do have the throtle in the gamepad, but can anyone here tell me that the throtle in Flight feels like the real one? do you really need the instruments to fly in flight? or could you just spot the plane with no cockpit and just fly?, the answer is yes. And the instrumentation is very basic, for that I'll pick the FSX with the add ons, Flight is very basic at this time, thats the MS idea, so it can be flown by anyone without any trouble. this is turning wrong, I'm not here to conplain about Flight or to defend FSX, i enjoy both of them, but for me Flight at this time it's just a game like Battlefield or Top Gun, far, very far from a flight simulator, but nice.
