Just to put things to rest about the temporary user interface, prototype buttons, and uninteresting appearance; Ideal Flight now has a modern new look, with new buttons and improved user workflow. :Peace:

The new UI has been well recieved so I'm sticking with it. There was a lot of work done for [rr] and I caused a few problems - you may find problems if you are not in English date format. There were a few issues choosing airports and some airports with no runways or 3ft wide. [rs] fixes those issues and improves on the UI slightly, plus there's a big performance upgrade to the UI especially if you have lots of addon planes. I'm hoping to upload [rs] this weekend. I'm going to upload [rs_preview4] to the IF forum shortly and get that tested in a few hours time.

Someone asked if Ideal Flight does proper waypoints, or rather does IF do up to date navaid sets like Navigraph or Aerosoft's NavDataPro. Put simply YES. These are automatically used by IF if they are part of the FSX navaid DB - see these links:

For serious simming you can change the scenery so that you have the navaids to go with the new waypoint set, the airports runways numbered correctly and declination adjusted:

Discussion on NavDataPro:

Otherwise if you want to add fixes to the flight plans, they simply copy/paste into an edit box where IF understands the Navigraph and NavDataPro formats.

I'm about to upload IF [rs] to my site:

[rr] had a lot of work done and the few problems I caused have been fixed. Plus with a few more tweaks and performance enhancements, I hope will increase the enjoyment of using IF.

Thanks for such great support from you all.

I had another few mails regarding the situation with using alternative datasets like NavDataPro or Navigraph. Since there is a lot of interrest in this side of fight planning, I though it best to post a little more about it here, and it does pose some more answers for Bruce's questions earlier...

At the moment there are various flight planners which can import new datasets and make plans from them, FSC92 for example.

If the scenery has not had the same changes applied, you will need an addon aircraft that also understands the same navdataset used for the plan e.g. Level D 767.

When you have the plan, open the plan with IF and an "Ideal Flight" will be generated for it. Continue as with regular IF plans.

IF may use alternative datasets and have manual planning facilities in a future upgrade, but at the moment codelegend encourages you to stick with your familiar planning tools to create plans for alternative data sets and manually created plans. Or as said before, make sure the scenery has been upgraded to suit the navdata, or copy/paste Navigraph fixes into the IF plan in the Flight Generator window.

Cant get it to work. I downladed the Demo and set up my flight. I then go to start FSX and I get the Mission briefing window but no FSX is visible. When I close the mission briefing screen Im left with the little FSX icon but pressing that does not open FSX. Any help appeciate. It looks like a great program but Im amazed at howmuch work it takes sometimes to get FSX addons to start.

It's an FSX thing, IF starts FSX by Opening a .FLT, so when you see the kneeboard and FSX is finished loading, try Alt+Enter, should make it full screen then Alt+Enter makes it windowed again, if you close FSX it will remember where to display the main screen.

now here's some pics in case you can't get it going ;-)

The only thing holding me back here is I use FS Commander and it seems like these programs would not work well together with flight planning. Can I load an FS Commander flightplan into IF or vice-versa?

  • Commercial Member

Yes, I use FSC myself. IF accepts FS9 and FSX plans, and creates FSX plans (.xml). Exporting of more plan types to follow shortly.

The whole point of IF's planner is to save you having to find a route, you can edit any IF plan in FSC and drop it back on IF, or create plans from scratch in your planner and drop them on IF. IF simply enhances your plan into something much more interesting.
