March 24, 201214 yr Author Moderator Could other 3rd party developments be far behind ?I am just curious as to how MS might feel about this.Why would they not be delighted? After all, it takes nothing away from them - it's totally FREE - and does nothing but add value to Flight for the user. It doesn't rely on hacking into the innards of Flight in any way, doesn't alter any files at all, but instead simply reads the computer's own RAM memory locations to obtain the latitude/longitude of the user's aircraft. March 24, 201214 yr This is VERY cool!!! As for legalities, as long as it does not modify Flight in any way, MS cant do anything. If it passively reads location data that Flight spits out openly, its fair game! Im no legal expert though, but I dont see a problem. I doubt MS will hold it against you at all for using it since it in no way allows you to cheat or gain an unfair advantage.The only thing MS would do if anything is patch the game that would make the widget not work anymore.Why would they not be delighted? MS is know for one thing....maybe two when their name is mentioned. Main one is money, MS or as most people put it M$ loves their money and their shareholders love them for the money they make.But it does add extra value, will it add enough for more people to come to flight and spend money......I don't think so but time will tell.

For starters, invasion of their turf, which they have tried so hard to protect - at least for now and the foreseeable future. Secondly, it may set a precedent for future 3rd party add-ons, thus further eroding their control of their turf.I don't know what sort of restrictions they place on the user and/or the user's hardware - so, IMHO, it's a grey area. And I am not too thrilled with it being "Live" !

Thus far after twenty-four hours there's been not a peep from anyone in Redmond......but there's been more than a few who've d/l'd and are enjoying it!Does any software company object to the hundreds of "screen shot programs" that've been available for many, many years? :Thinking: Fr. March 25, 201214 yr Great find ! ...I just discovered that it will load the weather stations. Clicking on the stations displayed will give you the current RW Metar and/or TAF....is it real world data or MS Flight ingame data?
March 25, 201214 yr Works great on the iPad using Air Display and Flight in full screen mode. B)Only thing is the aircraft symbol always points in the same direction. Steve Smith i7-2600K - GTX580 - 8GB ram
March 25, 201214 yr I just want to back Bill up here. I cannot see how the Flight Team would see that much of a problem - they have not commented so far. This tool is reading computer memory and using the information to display something. It is pretty straight forward to do. This is not new content, it does not make any changes in the files or security of Flight. As far as I can see the method used here is not going to help to add any content of the type that a number of folks are hoping for. It is a great little tool and all thanks to Fermin for making it available so quickly. Jon ------- Microsoft Flight Sim MVP Airport Design Editor FSDeveloper.com
March 25, 201214 yr If it's a EULA violation for this program to read your RAM contents and act on what it finds, then it's also a EULA violation to run a real-time virus-scanner while playing Flight.
March 25, 201214 yr It does seem to be skewed just a few degrees counter-clockwise, but I'm not fussed about that! :Peace:Ok, I finally tried this out (I'm single-monitor, so it's usefulness is limited for me). It sounds like some of you were saying that the aircraft icon was turning to indicate your in-game heading (but not accurately). The aircraft icon doesn't turn at all for me, whatever heading I select... it just consistantly remains pointed at around 005-010, even after several minutes of flying south-west.

Close GMap then relaunch it and Connect again. It should now work properly. I had the same thing occur late yesterday afternoon (Icon not following actual a/c heading), and that solved it for me!is it real world data or MS Flight ingame data?Unfortunately it is real world data, which of course Flight doesn't support... I used it on a single monitor without problems, as I don't need it up all the time. The technology is pretty exciting, and if Microsoft doesn't give us a 2D GPS panel, this will be the way to go, I think. I have about as good luck navigating from the top down view, so I'll stick with that, mostly. Nice to have a real moving map though. Would be even nicer if it were customized for Flight, with special maps.Hook Larry Hookins Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of EarthAnd danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;

I haven't taken the time yet to see what pre-packaged charts are available for purchase yet... Fr. Bill AOPA Member: 07141481 AARP Member: 3209010556 Avsim Board of Directors | Avsim Forums Moderator

Would be even nicer if it were customized for Flight, with special maps.And really really nice if it were able to be used on the secondary monitor whilst flying in full screen mode. Yeah I know that is a limitation imposed by the Flight program itself - just wishful thinking, as I much prefer , and will continue, to fly in full screen mode. Little better performance, and no obtrusive task and title bars to take away from the display. Don B
