FS Nav

I have used a program called FS Navigator for several years. I use it on a second monitor for navigating to various airports and lining up with runways, with or withhout ILS. Works great but is outdated. Is there a similar program available?

Hello

You could have look at FSCommander, but in what way do you find FSNav outdated ?

I started with FSNav and was fortunate to become a Beta tester for FlightSim Commander. FSC is awesome, but there really is nothing wrong with FSNavigator, especially when you take into account the fact that Navigraph updates the database now every month (not free).

Will have a look at FlightSim Commander. I just thought there have been no updates to FSNav, to the best of my knowledge. I also find it time comsuming to have it remake the entire database every time I add a new airport. Maybe there is a short cut here I don't know about.

I agree with Mad Dog and Chuck. Navigraph provide monthly updates for the FSNav database and it's no trouble at all to keep the data fresh.

FSNav is one of the most ingenious addons ever written for FS. The fact that no-one has written a replacement for FSX that works in the same way (as a DLL) shows the vision of Helge. Pity we can't clone him!

When I do eventually switch to FSX it will be one program I'll sorely miss.

Sadly, I believe Helge passed away a year or two ago, so unfortunately they'll be no cloning.

Ray, please tell me If I'm wrong, I would love to hear it!

I heard the same thing about Helge. Too bad. I use FSCommander and it is excellent. The only thing I miss is the ability to make your plane invisible on the map. I like to navigate old style VOR to VOR but don't want to see myself. I don't think this feature is going to be implemented in FSCommander. Other then that, well worth the money.

Sadly, I believe Helge passed away a year or two ago, so unfortunately they'll be no cloning.

What is the source of this ?

The only info we know is that in late 2007 Helge told Simmarket to take the product off the market at the end of the year, Despite their attempts to try and convince him to keep it available he was insistent it not be distributed anymore.

To remind people what it was like back then, Helge was getting a lot of criticism back then for the almost complete lack of support of his product, he was rarely seen on the support forums. And even though he would occasionally put out a patch or update, he rarely answered any questions on his forum.

I believe he may have become frustrated at the number of complaints, demands etc on the FSNav forum regarding an FSX version (or lack thereof) and overall support of FSNav and simply in shut it all down and went on to do other things.

He may simply no longer have had time to deal with FSNav.

Either way Helge made it clear he had no intention of producing another version of FSNav.

Regards.

Ernie.

I have no idea Chuck. Normally when someone who has contributed a lot to FS passes away the community gets to hear. So in the absence of any news I imagine he's still with us even though we're unlikely to get FSNavX. Pity.

Thanks for touching base with me, Ray! It's been a long time since we met each other on the boards!

In several Google searches I couldn't find any reference to his passing, but with the hack back in '07 or '08 (whenever it was) who knows if it survived? And I definitely could be mistaken. Regardless of Helge's current status he was never one to "flood the boards" with his support for FS Navigator (which was more than adequate, mind you) or his general opinions about anything. I know he had a terrible car accident in 2004 and that he closed down any new sales of FS Navigator in 2007, but he was always one who valued his privacy greatly. After the accident, he obviously couldn't support the product in the way he probably wanted to, so it's highly unlikely he'd answer even a posted thread like this one.

FS Navigator is a great product, and still highly relevant today almost 15(?) years since it's initial development. I used if for many years, and the only reason I stopped was because I just wanted the challenge of trying something new . . . it seems I got bored with FSNAV LONG before it did of me!

Thanks for your input, Ray and you take care of yourself, my friend...! Let's stay in touch . . .
