Where do you acquire your flight plans?

Featured Replies

I use VATAWARE if I need a flight plan quickly.  I might check a few different flights of the same route for quality. Check the flight levels are consistent.

The I would paste the route into simroutes can generate a FSX (for activesky)  and rte for the CDU, with the CO route option. Seems to work without any complaints.

These days, all I need is the departure and the destination aerodrome. The rest is handled by PFPX...

Name available upon request

I usually feed PFPX flightaware data if available.

If not available, let PFPX do it's autoroute thing and then check and edit if required.

Even though PFPX is very good, it sometimes makes some very odd decisions depending on how some airport SID and STAR structures are set up, like sometimes it will start an Eastbound flight with a Westbound SID then loop back onto itself overhead the airport on an Airway, because the Eastbound SID's don't link up directly to an airway. YSSY's Eastbound SID's suffer this issue (They are RNAV to a random point then Radar Vector direct to somewhere).

Some searching of valid SID's plus a keen look is sometimes required to avoid silly loop backs and zig zags. Formatting out of USA and into ICAO (ie no SID/STAR on the flightplan notification) may also be required from time to time.

That said, the big map screen pullout can be used to good effect with the High airways enabled to just type in amendments. even over long distances.

I get my routes from BAv ;) If I need to make my own, I use PFPX to generate and validate. If I am outside CFMU area, I use the new "send to SkyVector" function to check the routing, and of course play with the nice weather overlays :)

Morten, I wasn't aware of any "Send to skyVector"-functionality in PFPX. I saw the author saying he would take a look at it (October 2nd) but that's all I've read about it. I just had  a look at it but couldn't find it - any pointers?

I am away from my PC now, but you'll find it in the same menu where you send data to TopCat, when you're in the mode where that menu is available.

Cheers,

I use FlightAware then I copy it over into SimRoutes and download it as a .rte

I use pfpx. It makes life soo much easier and has cut down on my planning time.

I use PFPX. It's more than I could ever ask for in a flight planner.

Flightaware for US flying

Vataware for international flying

Skyvector for obtaining SIDS, STARS, Airport diagrams, and approach plates (free of charge)

Navigraph for getting the latest nav data loaded in my FMC's

Happy flying!

I also use FS Kneeboard 2 on my iPad Mini, it's $20 in the App store for the iPad version, $10 for iPhone version. Has METARs, every single plate imaginable for the United States, and even sectionals.

Yes this too, I use PFPX for the flight plans and use FS Kneeboard for the SID/STAR Charts and weather.

Don't forget also that it's easy to save charts for other countries (or whatever kind of document you want as long as it's a PDF) to dropbox and from there load them to tabs in FSKneeboard 2. I do that for charts, OFP from PFPX, different manuals, enroute charts... Only problem with OFP's as PDF's in FSKneboard of course is that you can't jot down comments like fuel and time updates.
